The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has agreed to postpone the end of the 2019-20 Serie A season from June 30 to August 2.
This would be in line with today’s indications from the UEFA Executive Committee, which is urging domestic leagues to complete their campaign by August 3.
This is the result of today’s emergency FIGC summit, as confirmed by a statement.
The season had been due to end on June 30, including contracts, loan deals and fixtures.
That cut-off date has been moved to August 2, giving extra time to finish the season after the COVID-19 pandemic and consequent lockdown.
“The world of football is working incessantly and in responsible fashion to find concrete and sustainable solutions to the crisis generated by COVID-19, including those necessary to safeguard the 2020-21 competitions,” said FIGC President Gabriele Gravina in a statement.
“I thank Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora for the attention he gave to us in yesterday’s meeting, where our approach was clearly laid out: we want to return to playing football in safety because that is what common sense dictates and we are asked to do so by the international organisations, of which Italian football is a part.
“I will send the medical protocol we drew up to the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee), ready to listen to any precious advice.”
Gravina also hit out at the critics who are complaining that football is given preferential treatment during this crisis.
“I am stunned that I have to again realise the temptation to talk constantly about football, for the notoriety that this brings, prompts some to comment on things they are evidently not well-informed about.”
Serie A sides hope to resume training from May 4, when the current Government lockdown orders are likely to be eased.
The aim then is to play the first Coppa Italia or Serie A games from May 27-31, or at most at the start of June.
August can then be used to play the remaining Champions League and Europa League fixtures.
