Munich air crash hero and goalkeeping great Gregg dies

Harry Gregg -- hailed as a hero for saving lives in the air crash which killed eight of Manchester United's "Busby Babes" in Munich -- has died at the age of 87.
Gregg, who was United's goalkeeper, rescued a mother and her baby daughter, team-mates Bobby Charlton and Jackie Blanchflower and manager Matt Busby from the wreckage of the plane on February 6, 1958.
He was back playing for Manchester United just 13 days later against Sheffield Wednesday.
Gregg became the world's most expensive goalkeeper when he joined United in December 1957 for £23,500 and went on to be voted the best at the following year's World Cup in Sweden.
He was capped 25 times by Northern Ireland and played 247 times for United from 1957-66.
"It is with great sorrow that we inform of the death of Manchester United and Northern Ireland legend Harry Gregg, OBE," the Harry Gregg Foundation announced on its Facebook page Monday.
"Harry passed away peacefully in hospital surrounded by his loving family. The Gregg family would like to thank the medical staff at Causeway Hospital for their wonderful dedication to Harry over his last few weeks.
"To everyone who has called, visited or sent well wishes we thank you for the love and respect shown to Harry and the family."
United posted a tribute on their website.
"It is with deepest sadness that we have learned of the passing of former player Harry Gregg OBE," said the club.
"The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club go out to Harry's family and friends."
Gregg, who legendary United manager Alex Ferguson said was his hero, was humble about his bravery in Munich.
"I would be telling lies if I said that I thought about it all the time. In fact I would go insane," he said in 2018 before a service marking 60 years since the disaster.
"I know the media would like to talk about what happened on a runway. I don't blame people for that, but if all I was ever part of, or all I ever achieved was to do with what happened in Germany, in Munich, if that was what my life was all about, it didn't come to very much."
It was left to others such as fellow Northern Ireland great George Best -- who cleaned Gregg's boots -- to sum up his courage.
"Bravery is one thing but what Harry did was about more than bravery," Best wrote in the foreword to Gregg's autobiography in 2002. "It was about goodness."
Carlisle, one of four clubs he managed after he hung up his boots in 1967, also tweeted a tribute him.
"He was the Hero of Munich -- returning to the plane repeatedly to help others in what he described as a 'spur of the moment' action," the fourth tier club tweeted.
"Thoughts with the family and friends of former manager Harry Gregg this morning."
The disaster, after a refuelling stop, killed eight of the young side dubbed "the Busby Babes" who had won successive league titles. The crash left manager Matt Busby fighting for his life.
The ill-fated aircraft was bringing the team back via Munich from Belgrade after they had reached the European Cup semi-finals.
The plane crashed on its third take-off attempt in terrible weather conditions killing 23 people, including three of the club's backroom staff, two crew, eight journalists and two others.
The club recovered to become the first English team to lift the European Cup 10 years later on a deeply emotional night at Wembley.
With Gregg's passing Charlton is the only member of the United group who were on the plane who is still alive.

Porto should have done more for Marega over racist abuse - Gullit

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit said Monday that Moussa Marega's Porto team-mates should have done more to protect him after the Mali striker walked off in protest after receiving racist abuse in a Portuguese league game.
On Sunday, the 28-year-old scored a 60th-minute winner for Porto against his ex-club Vitoria Guimaeres which led to a torrent of monkey chants.
In the 71st minute, France-born Marega signalled he was walking off to his bench in protest, even though his teammates, Porto coach Sergio Conceicao and some Vitoria players tried to make him stay on the pitch.
"I blame the other players. They should protect him and make a stand," said Gullit, speaking at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Berlin, indicating they should have accompanied him off the field.
"Also the opposition should say 'let's go off'.
"It shouldn't only be the responsibility of the player affected.
"That's what disappoints me the most.
"Provocations are part of football, but racist abuse is something different," added the Netherlands' former AC Milan and Chelsea midfielder star.
"If there are monkey sounds or bananas are being thrown, that's over the limit."
As he walked off on Sunday, an angry and upset Marega gave a thumbs-down signal with both gloved hands to the home Vitoria Guimaeres fans.
He had already been given a yellow card for his goal celebration.
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger disagreed with Gullitt that walking off is the best solution to solve racism in football.
The Frenchman fears racist insults from the terraces could "become a tool to disrupt" games by some fans.
"Of course you are against it (racism), because it is a form of violence, but I think it could be an easy tool to stop the game each time," added Wenger at the media event in Berlin.
"We have to identify who does it and punish them severely, ban them from going to games. That is the first step for me."
The Malian football federation meanwhile condemned the racists abuse and gave its "total backing" to the player in a statement.f

Dortmund defence is key against PSG, says Favre

Borussia Dortmund coach Lucien Favre says how his team defend against Paris Saint-Germain stars such as Neymar and Kylian Mbappe will be the deciding factor in Tuesday's Champions League clash.
Dortmund host PSG in the last 16, first leg at Signal Iduna Park with Neymar expected to return after missing four games with a rib injury.
"They're a dangerous team," Favre said in Dortmund on Monday.
"When you lose the ball, they move very fast up front. The key will be how we defend.
"It's important that we're very strong on winning the ball and then, when in possession, that we stay calm."
Under former Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel, PSG are looking to break their last-16 jinx having failed to progress past the first knock-out stage for the last three seasons.
Dortmund are looking to emulate their run to the 2013 Champions League final and have some serious attacking prowess of their own.
New signing Erling Braut Haaland, 19, has scored nine goals in six games and forged a successful partnership with England winger Jadon Sancho, also 19.
The teenagers are set to lead Dortmund's attack with Germany pair Marco Reus and Julian Brandt both out injured.
Dortmund's Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel has positive memories from his last game against Neymar -- in the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup.
"It's a good memory because we (Belgium) won (2-1), but tomorrow will be different," he said.
"If he plays, we'll have to pay attention to him, but not only to him, because Paris has a lot of qualities in attack.
"We'll have to be very compact, we'll have to defend together as a team and be very strong."

Five talking points in European football this weekend

It was a good weekend for Barcelona in the Spanish title race, while Paris Saint-Germain's defensive vulnerabilities were again exposed before the Champions League returns.
Meanwhile, action in Portugal was overshadowed by racist abuse suffered by Porto star Moussa Marega.
AFP Sport rounds up the main talking points from the weekend on the continent:
Real Madrid dropped two points by conceding a late equaliser to Celta Vigo on Sunday as next month's Clasico looks increasingly like proving a pivotal point in La Liga's title race.
Madrid briefly pulled six points clear of Barcelona earlier this month but the Catalans kept pace by scraping past Real Betis before capitalising on Celta's draw at the Santiago Bernabeu by beating Getafe 2-1 on Saturday.
It means instead of pulling away, Madrid's lead at the top has been cut to one point, with their game at home to Barca on March 1 fast approaching. Victory for either team could prove decisive.
Images of Porto striker Moussa Marega walking off the pitch in disgust after being racially abused in his team's game against Vitoria Guimaraes have sent shockwaves around the football world.
The 28-year-old, a France-born Mali international, signalled to the bench that he was walking off in protest in the 71st minute after being subjected to monkey chants.
He had scored a 60th-minute goal for Porto to seal a 2-1 win against his former club. Angry and upset, Marega gave a thumbs-down signal with both hands to home fans. Porto coach Sergio Conceicao and Vitoria players tried to get him to stay on the pitch.
"I hope I will never see you again on a football field. You are a disgrace," he wrote on Instagram in a message aimed at his tormentors, and the referee who booked him.
"We are Marega" said the front-page headline in sports daily A Bola on Monday, as Portuguese media reported police were seeking to identify those responsible.
Paris Saint-Germain did not get the reassurance they were looking for before Tuesday's Champions League last 16, first leg against Borussia Dortmund, as they drew 4-4 with Amiens in a remarkable Ligue 1 game.
PSG were 3-0 down, came back to lead 4-3 and then conceded a last-minute equaliser against opponents who have not won a league game in over three months.
Thomas Tuchel's team have let in eight goals in their last four outings, which hardly bodes well before facing a Dortmund side who are scoring at an average of four goals a game in 2020.
However, Tuchel will point to the fact he heavily rotated his team. Neymar and Kylian Mbappe were rested.
"It won't be the same match in Dortmund," insisted Tuchel. "I am still thinking about my team selection, and there are 12 or 13 players in contention to start."
Germany's Champions League representatives warmed up for their return to continental competition by recording big victories in the Bundesliga title race.
Bayern Munich remain a point clear at the summit after winning 4-1 at Cologne as Robert Lewandowski grabbed his 23rd goal of the season.
The Bavarians are not in Champions League action against Chelsea until next week. Before that, RB Leipzig are in London this week, facing Tottenham Hotspur fresh from a 3-0 win over Werder Bremen which leaves them second.
Borussia Dortmund's teenage star Erling Braut Haaland claimed his ninth goal in six games in Friday's 4-0 thumping of Eintracht Frankfurt, leaving them four points off the top in third.
Maurizio Sarri said Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey was finally settling into life at Juventus despite reports the Turin giants are ready to sell the former Arsenal player.
The 29-year-old joined Juventus on a free transfer last summer but has had an injury-riddled season, making 13 league appearances and scoring two goals in all competitions.
He helped the champions return to the top of the league with a 2-0 win over Brescia.
"Historically, British players have struggled to adapt to the tactics of our football, but it seems to me that he has overcome the difficult phase and that he can reach a high-level performance," said Sarri.

Casillas to run for president of Spanish Football Federation

Spain's World Cup-winning captain Iker Casillas will run for the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), he confirmed on Monday.
The date of the election has not yet been decided but Casillas said he has informed his current club Porto of his decision, with the 38-year-old now expected to retire from playing the game.
"Yes, I will run for the presidency of the RFEF when the elections are called," Casillas wrote in a statement.
"Together we will put our federation at the top of the best football in the world, the football of Spain.
"I have informed the president of my club, FC Porto, to whom I can only express the deepest gratitude."
Casillas is considered one of the greatest goalkeepers of his generation and led Spain to their first World Cup triumph in South Africa in 2010.
He played 167 times for Spain, also winning two Euros in 2008 and 2012, and made more than 700 appearances for Real Madrid, with whom he won five La Liga titles and the Champions League three times, before joining Porto in 2015.
Casillas was named in the FIFA FIFPro World XI five years in a row between 2008 and 2012.
But last April, he suffered a heart attack during training and has not played another competitive match since.
Casillas had been linked with the RFEF presidency for several months and is now expected to go up against current incumbent Luis Rubiales for the post.
"We are working with the utmost respect and determination in our candidacy," added Casillas. "More than 23,000 voters are waiting for us in fair and transparent elections. The 139 assembly members will decide."
Rubiales has been in perpetual conflict with Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, and the pair have clashed over numerous issues, including fixtures on Monday and Friday nights, matches abroad and the postponement of the Clasico in October.
According to the rules, the elections should be held in the second half of this year after the Tokyo Olympics but Rubiales has requested they be brought forward, before Euro 2020, which will run from 12 June to 12 July.

Dortmund teen Haaland goes head-to-head with PSG star Mbappe

At just 21, Kylian Mbappe is already a World Cup winner while at only 19, Erling Braut Haaland has emerged as a rising fast-star this season.
As Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi approach the end of their careers, could Mbappe and Haaland be the next duo to dominate football?
AFP Sport looks at the star forwards who meet when Haaland's Borussia Dortmund host Mbappe's Paris Saint-Germain in Tuesday's Champions League last 16, first leg, tie.
Haaland had barely arrived last month in Dortmund when the records started tumbling.
He justified the 20 million euros ($22 million) Dortmund paid Salzburg by becoming the first player to score a hat-trick on his Bundesliga debut.
Having scored 28 goals in 22 games for Salzburg, including eight in this season's Champions League group stage, Haaland picked up in Germany where he left off in Austria.
He made his debut coming off the bench with his new team 3-1 down at Augsburg in mid January. His clinical finishing produced three goals in 20 minutes to seal a 5-3 victory.
The teenager was praised by Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc, yet calmly replied: "You signed me to score goals".
Another two followed in a 5-1 rout of Cologne, then Haaland grabbed two more goals when Union Berlin were crushed 5-0.
He claimed his eighth goal in four games in Dortmund's German Cup defeat at Werder Bremen.
The Norwegian teen netted again in Friday's 4-0 thumping of Eintracht Frankfurt to extend his own record to nine goals in six games for Dortmund.
His attitude also impresses his new team-mates.
"When a young player has been so hyped, with everyone saying how good he is, then he can be a difficult person," said goalkeeper Roman Buerki.
"But he is a really cool guy, very professional.
"I'm one of the first at training - but he's always there earlier."
Haaland sees Mbappe as a role model.
"When I was in Salzburg, I started scoring goals, but I look at Kylian Mbappe banging in Ligue 1 goals, so you can always reach a higher level," Haaland told Bundesliga.com.
For a player who turned 21 in December, Mbappe's achievement's are astonishing.
The World Cup winner is also France's reigning player of the year and has won three Ligue 1 titles with two different clubs.
Mbappe recently reached a century of club goals, and his 19 in the Champions League is a record for a player before his 21st birthday.
The second youngest player to score in a World Cup final after Pele, Mbappe hit double figures for Champions League goals before he had even turned 19.
By that time he had already become the second most expensive player in football history when PSG signed him from Monaco for a total reported fee of 180 million euros ($215 million).
Mbappe has been to Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park before. He scored twice when Monaco drew 3-3 there in the 2017 Champions League quarter-finals, a match postponed by 24 hours after a bomb attack on the Dortmund team bus.
He scored another in the return leg as Monaco advanced to the last four.
At that time, he was the teenage sensation.
Now, he is a World Cup winner and is PSG's top scorer this season with 24 goals.
Maybe he is beginning to develop a star's ego. He showed his dismay at coach Thomas Tuchel when substituted in a recent 5-0 win over Montpellier.
"If a player goes off and is angry with the coach, it's a fault on his part," said PSG sporting director Leonardo, also a World Cup winner as a player.
"But to then say he is a spoilt child, I don't accept that, because he is an adorable person, very committed too, a fantastic player."
However, after three successive years of failing to win a Champions League knockout tie, PSG want a return on their investment in Neymar and Mbappe where it matters - in Europe.

Kilmarnock vs Aberdeen Prediction & Match Previewf

Kilmarnock vs Aberdeen
Scotland – FA Cup
Date: Wednesday, 19 February 2020
Kick-off at 19:45 UK/ 20:45 CET
Venue: Rugby Park (Kilmarnock).
A spot in the Quarters await the winner of this game, and after a tiring goalless draw in the first leg, we should expect more or less a similar set of ninety minutes in the replay as well.

Kilmarnock vs Aberdeen Head-to-head (h2h)

  • 20 of the previous 22 wins had gone to Aberdeen.
  • Six of the previous eight matches failed to have goals from both teams.
  • Three of the preceding five games ended in goalless draws.
  • Ten of the preceding twelve match-ups at this stadium ended in wins for the guests.
  • Kilmarnock had scored a total of one goal from the past four meetings at this ground.

Kilmarnock vs Aberdeen Prediction

Aberdeen had hosted Kilmarnock in the first leg of the tie. Both teams were not ready to concede even an inch in the fixture, and tried their level best to secure progression to the quarters. At the end though, the teams settled for a goalless draw, thus leading to the replay.
Once again we can count on the teams to give paramount importance to defense, in order to avoid mistakes, that in turn could lead to elimination. The strategy for both the squads will be to play it safe, and try to capitalize on mistakes by the opposite side.
Likely, once again we can count on a low-scoring affair between the two. Moreover, these two have a history of low-scoring h2h clashes recently. In fact, six of the last eight meetings had under 2.5 goals, and three of the former five encounters were completely goalless.
Going on though, Aberdeen do have a slight advantage this Wednesday. They are in contention for a podium spot in the league table, while their counterparts are placed in the bottom half of the table. Also, Aberdeen have historically dominated this opponent to a great extent.
To be precise, 20 of the prior 22 h2h wins had gone to Aberdeen, and ten of the last twelve clashes at this stadium had ended in victories for the guests. Considering these findings, it’s adjudged that Aberdeen should avoid a loss this Thursday against Kilmarnock.

Kilmarnock vs Aberdeen Betting Tips

  • Under 2.5 Match Goals @ 1.60 (3/5)
  • Double Chance: Aberdeen or Draw @ 1.44 (4/9).

Manchester City vs West Ham Prediction & Match Preview

Manchester City vs West Ham
English Premier League
Date: Wednesday, 19 February 2020
Kick-off at 19:30 UK/ 20:30 CET
Venue: Etihad Stadium (Manchester).
At the Etihad, against a relegation-battler, Manchester City should pull off a serious bottle-job to not post the three points on the board. Also keep note that they will be furious after the loss they experienced at the hands of Spurs the prior game week.

Manchester City vs West Ham Head-to-head (h2h)

  • City are on a ten-match winning run against this opponent.
  • The reverse fixture had ended in a 0-5 win for Pep Guardiola’s men.
  • The combined scoreline for the past nine meetings is 32-3, in favor of the Citizens.
  • 11 of the previous 12 encounters at this stadium saw the hosts recording wins.

Manchester City vs West Ham Match Preview

Manchester City lost on the road the previous match-day against Tottenham. The scoreline was 2-0, in favor of the hosts, and this loss further incremented Liverpool’s chances for the title.
More than that, the fact that Spurs were managed by none other than Jose Mourinho will really have done a number of Pep, as these two are considered to be arch-rivals.
By all means, we can expect a reinvigorated Guardiola, thirsty for the win this Sunday, and this should spell bad news for the guests.
Meanwhile, West Ham were held to a 3-3 draw the prior game week at home. They had to settle for just a point, in spite of having the home advantage, as well as a 2-0 lead at half time.
It was the sixth winless game in a row for the team, and it just invited more pressure on the team, already worried of getting relegated.

Manchester City vs West Ham Prediction

City are the reigning champions of England, and in fact, had delivered the first domestic treble in the history of the country last season. They are also tipped to finish second this EPL season, and on top of that, have the home advantage as well.
On the other hand, West Ham are placed 18th in a table of 20, and are in serious danger of getting the boot, come this summer. They have so far secured a total of 24 points from their 25 fixtures, and are one of the only four teams to have conceded 40+ goals.
Do keep note that City have scored the most number of goals so far in 2019-20. In addition, City are on a ten-match winning run against this opponent, and at this venue, in the last 12 years, disregarding a single game, the Manchester Blues hold a 100% winning record against West Ham.
Taking into account these observations, rightfully count on Manchester City to record a huge victory this Sunday.

Manchester City vs West Ham Betting Tips

Half Time/ Full Time: Manchester City/ Manchester City @ 1.40 (2/5)
To Score in Both Halves: Manchester City @ 1.40 (2/5).

Neymar back from injury for Dortmund clash

Neymar has been named in the Paris Saint-Germain squad for Tuesday's Champions League last-16 first leg at Borussia Dortmund, despite missing the French club's last four games through injury.
The world's most expensive player has been struggling with a rib problem, but was expected to be fit in time for the game at Signal Iduna Park.
The Brazilian missed last season's surprise last-16 loss to Manchester United with a foot injury, while he also sat out the second leg of the defeat at the same stage of the competition by Real Madrid in 2018.
Neymar was rested, along with Kylian Mbappe, for PSG's remarkable 4-4 draw at Amiens in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
"He will be in Dortmund, I'm sure of it, but without being in the best shape he was in two weeks ago," Tuchel said before the Amiens game.
"But he will help us. I am sure and convinced of that."
PSG are yet to reach the Champions League semi-finals since being bought by their Qatari owners in 2011, with their run to the last four in 1994-95 still the closest they have come to lifting the European Cup.

African players in Europe: Mane moves Liverpool closer to title

Reigning African Footballer of the Year Sadio Mane scored the goal that brought Liverpool victory at Norwich and moved the Reds closer to a first English league title in 30 years.
The 27-year-old Senegalese came off the bench to strike on 78 minutes and break the resistance of the gallant home side in the lively top-versus-bottom clash.
Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ivorian Nicolas Pepe of Arsenal were other African scorers in the Premier League at the weekend.
PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG/NICOLAS PEPE (Arsenal)
Pepe teed up Aubameyang for his 17th goal of the season with a towering header to open the floodgates in Arsenal's 4-0 win over Newcastle. The Ivorian then found the net himself with a trademark left-foot finish and set up another goal late on for Alexandre Lacazette as the Gunners returned to winning ways after four straight draws.
SADIO MANE (Liverpool)
Mane scored the only goal in Liverpool's 1-0 win at Norwich to continue their relentless run towards the Premier League title. He was making his comeback from a hamstring injury, but showed no signs of rustiness by controlling Jordan Henderson's through ball with his right foot then firing home with his left.
JOSEPH AIDOO (Celta Vigo)
Ghanaian Aidoo found himself lined up against a stellar cast of strikers as he played on the right side of Celta Vigo's back three at Real Madrid. Real recalled Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale but Aidoo and the defence conceded only two goals to earn a draw in Madrid and keep just above the relegation zone. Aidoo came within a finger nail of making an even bigger splash. In the final minute of the first half he outjumped the Real defence at a corner and smashed a header toward the far corner of the goal, only to be denied by a world-class save from Thibaut Courtois.
GERVINHO (Parma)
Ivorian forward Gervinho returned for Europa League hopefuls Parma, tapping in on 25 minutes in a 1-0 victory over Sassuolo, for his fifth goal this season. The 32-year-old had been exiled from the first team and dropped for four games after trying to force a move to Al Sadd, the Qatari club coached by former Barcelona star Xavi.
ACHRAF HAKIMI (Borussia Dortmund)
The Morocco wing-back again proved why he is one of Dortmund's most potent forces going forward with two assists in a 4-0 drubbing of Eintracht Frankfurt. The 21-year-old, on loan from Real Madrid, spotted captain Lukasz Piszczek free on the edge of the area to give Dortmund a first-half lead. Hakimi then claimed his ninth league assist this season just after the break, getting in behind the defence to square for Norwegian teenager Erling Braut Haaland to score his ninth goal in six games.
JAMILU COLLINS (Paderborn)
The Nigeria defender failed to stop bottom side Paderborn losing 2-1 at home to Hertha Berlin after deflecting a shot by Brazilian striker Matheus Cunha into the net. At 1-1 in the second half, Collins was on the goalline when Cunha hit a shot with the side of his foot, which cannoned off the defender.
VICTOR OSIMHEN (LILLE)
Nigerian international Osimhen gave Lille a 51st-minute lead against second-placed Marseille, pouncing onto Jonathan Bamba's pass to beat goalkeeper Steve Mandanda for his 13th goal of the season, the same number as PSG's Brazilian superstar Neymar. However, their Champions League rivals hit back with two goals in two second-half minutes to earn the three points.

'It's not Klopp coming back' - Dortmund chief cool on Tuchel return with PSGf

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke gave a terse response when asked about the return of former coach Thomas Tuchel to Signal Iduna Park with his Paris Saint-Germain team for Tuesday's Champions League last 16 first leg.
Tuchel coached Dortmund for two seasons until he was sacked in 2017, shortly after winning the German Cup, following a public falling-out with Watzke.
The pair disagreed on whether they should have played a Champions League quarter-final against Monaco the day after the Dortmund team bus was targeted by a bomb blast in April 2017.
"We worked well together for two years, and in the end things got a bit tough," Watzke told broadcaster DAZN.
"We will certainly not become great friends in life any more. But that was three years ago."
Watzke also said emotions "will play no role" when Tuchel leads out PSG.
"It's not Jurgen Klopp coming back," added Watzke.
The current Liverpool manager is still revered in Dortmund after leading the team to back-to-back league titles in 2011 and 2012.
"Thomas Tuchel is a great coach. And when I see him, I will certainly greet him and I think he'll do the same."

Guardiola to stick with City despite ban: reports

Pep Guardiola has told friends he is going to remain as manager of Manchester City even if the appeal against their two-year European football ban is rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), according to media reports on Monday.
The 49-year-old Spaniard is said by The Times to have told both the City board and the players he will be staying despite the sanction and reported interest from Serie A champions Juventus.
Guardiola, who has been at City for four years, reportedly told the players of his intention at a meeting on Saturday.
"Look, whatever league we are in, I will still be here," Guardiola told them according to Sky Sports News.
"Even if they put us in League Two, I will still be here. This is a time for sticking together."
He is likely to confirm this at the press conference on Wednesday following the re-arranged Premier League match with West Ham.
The match on February 9 was postponed due to Storm Ciara.
The Sun claims the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager has told friends he is going to at least see out his contract with the club which runs until 2021.
He is old friends with City executives Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain and enjoys an amicable relationship with club chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak.
"He is not the kind of person whose first thought is to leave when things turn bad," sources close to Guardiola told The Daily Telegraph.
According to those sources Guardiola -- who was informed of the UEFA ruling prior to its official announcement when he returned from a break in Barcelona on Friday -- is "calm" about the ban.
Guardiola has won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and twice lifted the League Cup since arriving at the Etihad Stadium in 2016.
As for the players the Daily Mail says they will stay too, although the Telegraph state the opposite should the club lose the appeal.
England striker Raheem Sterling has been the subject of rumours surrounding a likely bid by Real Madrid -- who City face in the Champions League last 16 later this month.
However, agent Aidy Ward, who has represented Sterling since he was at school, told the Daily Mail his client was focused on City and not any transfer speculation.
"Raheem is solely focused on Manchester City and will not be distracted by any talk of transfers at the moment," said Ward.
The club, though, according to the Telegraph, will leave it up to the individuals once the decision on the appeal is delivered, which they believe will be in May.
"Everyone has been told they need to stay professional but also there is an understanding that they have their own decisions to make," said the source.
City, though, remain confident they will emerge victorious.
"Trust me like I trust you, this will be dropped," Soriano is said by Sky to have told the players.
The players are said by a source close to them to be content with the account they have been given by City executives.
"Since this all started, they've all been told that City have done nothing wrong," the source told Sky.
"That's still the message, so nothing's changed."
UEFA announced the sanction on Friday, with European football's governing body punishing City for what it said were "serious" financial fair-play breaches between 2012 and 2016.
City were also fined 30 million euros ($32.5 million).
The heavy sanctions relate to an alleged overstatement of sponsorship revenue in the club's efforts to comply with financial fair-play rules.

Preview MD2 - Group C: Sharjah (UAE) vs Persepolis FC (IRN)

Sharjah: UAE Pro League champions Sharjah host Iran Pro League winners Persepolis as both sides look to bounce back from opening day defeats in Group C of the 2020 AFC Champions League on Tuesday.

Sharjah were beaten 1-0 by Saudi Arabia’s Al Taawoun FC last week, while Persepolis’ Matchday One trip to Doha saw them concede two early goals to lose 2-0 to Al Duhail SC.

Returning to the competition after 16 years of absence, the Emirati champions hope to get off the mark on Tuesday, having failed to find the back of the net in their first game. In fact, Sharjah had the lowest shooting accuracy of any team on Matchday One, with only one of their seven shots against Al Taawoun hitting the target.
Sharjah’s attacking struggles are, perhaps, not surprising; coach Abdulaziz Al Anbari’s side have failed to replace Cape Verde striker Ricardo Gomes who was offloaded to Ittihad Kalba in January. Instead, they opted to add more width with the signing of former Kashima Antlers and Al Ain winger Caio Lucas.

Despite dominating the Iran Pro League since 2017 with three consecutive titles, Persepolis’ impressive run of back-to-back AFC Champions League semi-finals in 2017 and 2018 gave way to a group-stage exit in the 2019 edition.
Over the past 12 months, the Tehran giants replaced coach Branko Ivankovic with Gabriel Calderon, but the Argentine’s reign lasted just five months before he stepped down. In came former club icon Yahya Golmohammedi with the stated objective of bouncing back to compete in the advanced stages of the AFC Champions League.

Venue: Sharjah Stadium, Sharjah
Kick-off: February 18, 19:35 UTC+4

VAL
Juanito
Jbelz
Iwahraniii
Vasqes
ÁlvaroG
Francisco Rodriguez
Nacho Abela
Jaime del Campo
Luis Moreno
Miguel García
Celtilikos
Riveiro
