Genoa vs SPAL Prediction & Match Preview

Genoa vs SPAL
Italian Serie A
Date: Sunday, 12 July 2020
Kick-Off at 16:15 UK/ 17:15 CET
Venue: Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Genoa has fallen into the relegation zone after the recent defeat to Napoli. The reason why they are struggling this season is mainly due to their defense.

The Griffins gave away 60 goals in the season while scoring only 38 in return They are currently without a win in the 5 Serie A games.
The visitors are also in a similar situation like their upcoming opposition. From their last 10 outing n the league they managed to win only one, which was against Parma.
Currently, SPAL are at the bottom of the table ready for the second tier action next year.

Genoa vs SPAL: Head-to-head (h2h)

  • The last four meetings between these two teams were back to back draws.
  • All those four matches had the same final score of 1-1.
  • Genoa has not won a single competitive game against this opposition in all five clashes.
  • All their five matches had less than 2.5 goals at full time.
  • Both games between them at this ground ended as a draw with both teams getting a goal each.
  • Genoa has lost all four latest home matches in the league.

Genoa vs SPAL Prediction

The hosts are the only team that has a chance of getting to the safe side of the table. With teams like Lecce losing consecutive matches they could progress higher if they win some of the remaining games.
But they have no wins against Spal and the reverse fixture was a draw. At the same time, Spal is on a losing streak away from home at present too. Thus we can expect a draw like the majority of their previous clashes.
Both of them found the back of the net in all of their recent 4 meetings. Even though Spal has lost the majority of their away games during recent weeks, they have found the net more often than not.
In fact, the recent loss to Sampdoria was the first time they failed to score in 6 away fixtures. Genoa has also scored in their last 7 league games at this ground. So I am backing a draw with both teams netting goals.

Genoa vs SPAL Betting Tips

  • Match to Draw @ 4.00 (3/1).
  • Both teams to score @ 1.95 (10/11).

Sevilla vs Mallorca Prediction & Match Preview

Sevilla vs Mallorca

Kick-off at 21:00 UK/ 22:00 CET
Venue: Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan (Sevilla).
Sevilla will try to carry forward their winning streak to stay in the Champions League spot in the table this season. Mallorca will not be a threat as they are a relegation prone side in the mix.

Sevilla vs Mallorca Match preview
Sevilla is unbeaten in their last 14 matches in the schedule across all major competitions. They are on a three-game winning streak in the league with two clean sheets in it.

Their previous encounter was on the road and they defeated Bilbao with a 1-2 scoreline.

The host has lost only two of their 17 home matches in the league this season until now. Besides, they are unbeaten in their last ten clashes as the host in the campaign.

Mallorca has three wins in their last ten matches and it has to be noted that Rodriguez and Kubo have been involved in two of those wins.

The visitor is the worst away side in the campaign based on the points in the table. They have only one win in their 17 away fixtures so far this season.

They will visit after a 2-0 win at home against Leganes last time out in the league.

Los Bermellones will probably put up a tough fight, but the promoted side’s squad strength will not likely be enough to match the home team’s dugout in the encounter.

Sevilla vs Mallorca Head-to-head (h2h)
The host has recorded three of the last five wins.
Their previous encounter gave a 0-2 away win for SFC.
Both teams have scored in three of the last five fixtures.
The teams have combined for an average 3.1 goals per match in the last ten clashes held here.
Sevilla vs Mallorca Prediction
The match is sizing to be a straight home win in ninety minutes, but the last time these teams met at this venue, it Mallorca with a win in the Copa del Rey clash.

Sevilla enjoys their home ground advantage in the game and the towering 31 point lead over the visitors in the league table. With this dominance, the host has a slight edge over the opponents even before the match.

Mallorca had some pleasant games recently, but fighting it out against the squad strength of Julen Lopetegui and his men will be a different story for the promoted side.

The home win in full-time with 1.40 odds will be the best bet for the punters in the game. With respect to their h2h history, under 3.5 goals will be a suitable option from the goals area.

Sevilla vs Mallorca Betting tips
Sevilla to win @ 1.40 (2/5).
Under 3.5 goals @ 1.40 (2/5).

Leganes vs Valencia Prediction & Match Preview

Leganes vs Valencia
Spain – LaLiga
Date: Sunday, 12 July 2020
Kick-off at 18:30 UK/ 19:30 CET
Venue: Estadio Municipal de Butarque (Leganes).
With only two more favorable matches including this in hand for both teams, these three points will play an important role for each side in the league table.

Leganes vs Valencia Match preview

Leganes has only one win in their last five matches in the campaign but is unbeaten in the last two matches with a goalless draw on the road against Eibar in their last match in the schedule.
They are winless in the last five home matches with two losses in it.
It has to be noted that Los Pepineros hasn’t scored in their recent two home matches and will be on the back of a loss from their last attempt at home in the league.
After three consecutive losses, Valencia turned things to their favor in the campaign with two unbeaten games lately. They will visit after a 2-1 win at home against Valladolid last time out.
The visitor has won none of their last nine league away fixtures. But their most recent outing to Granada saw them keep at least a point in the 2-2 encounter.
Despite losing ten of their 17 away fixtures until now, the Bats will probably be able to work it out against the host with their overall performance in the campaign.

Leganes vs Valencia Head-to-head (h2h)

  • Their last three meetings ended in a draw.
  • The guest is unbeaten in all clashes since 2016.
  • The Bats have kept a clean sheet in their last 3 wins.
  • Their previous encounter resulted in a 1-1 draw.

Leganes vs Valencia Prediction

Leganes is struggling to find a way out of the relegation zone this season. The host will invite more troubles when they host Valencia, who is back in track in the league after a bad run post lockdown.
In the meantime, the Bats also have nothing to cheer in their away fixtures. However, the visitor has a better overall form in the league which will give them a slight edge.
Leganes has never won against the visitors in any h2h meetings since 2016. Since their recent three h2h clashes have ended in a draw, the draw no bet over Valencia with 1.50 odds will hopefully be the best option in the game for the punters.
The tip for over 1.5 goals with 1.50 odds will come in handy considering their scoring averages in the recent meetings overall. The host is not at the best position and is likely not to score. So, the tip for no BTTS with 1.66 will be a suitable option for the ninety minutes.

Leganes vs Valencia Betting tips

  • Draw no bet: Valencia @ 1.50 (1/2).
  • Over 1.5 goals @ 1.50 (1/2).
  • Both teams to score: No @ 1.66 (4/6).

Levante vs Athletic Bilbao Prediction & Match Preview

Levante vs Athletic Bilbao
Spain – LaLiga
Date: Sunday, 12 July 2020
Kick-off at 16:00 UK/ 17:00 CET
Venue: Estadio Olimpico Camilo Cano (La Nucia).
Levante will play for nothing as they are not prone to both promotion and relegation. The mid-table side will still fancy a win against Bilbao, who is struggling to make it into the promotion zone in the league table.

Levante vs Athletic Bilbao Match preview

Levante is winless for the past three fixtures in their schedule, but only one of those has ended in a defeat in the league. The loss came in their last match against Mallorca, leading to a 2-0 loss on the road.
Granotas is at their strongest suit at home as they have only one loss in their last 7 attempts here. Their splendid form at home is likely to yield at least a draw in the match.
Athletic Bilbao is a powerful side in the mix known for their pressing game. But the team has taken a dip in form and is on a two-game losing streak in their schedule.
Their previous encounter was at home and they lost to Sevilla with a 1-2 scoreline.
Bilbao’s last tour to Valencia ended in their favor and both their recent losses were against top part teams in the table. However, 3 wins from 17 away fixtures is not the strongest form on the road.
In the meantime, the host has only 4 losses in their 17 home matches so far. With their advantage at home, they can exploit the visitor’s dip in form to their favor for the points.

Levante vs Athletic Bilbao Head-to-head (h2h)

  • The guest has recorded three of the last five wins.
  • Bilbao is unbeaten in their recent two meetings.
  • Their previous encounter gave a 2-1 home win for Bilbao.
  • Four of their last five matches saw both teams score.

Levante vs Athletic Bilbao Prediction

Levante is five points behind the visitors in the league table, but their recent results in the campaign schedule are better than the traveling side’s record in the same period.
Granotas enjoys the home ground advantage in the clash with their decent record at home. Meanwhile, Bilbao hasn’t been intimidating when playing away from home.
Gaizka Garitano’s boys faced a 3-0 defeat in their most recent visit to this venue. Besides, the host only had a narrow loss in their reverse fixture this season.
The double chance favoring Levante at 1.60 odds will be a suitable option for the punters.
Considering the chances of BTTS in the game with 1.80 odds, the tip for over 1.5 goals with 1.40 odds will be the best bet in the encounter for the punters to yield decent returns,

Levante vs Athletic Bilbao Betting tips

  • Double chance: Levante or Draw @ 1.60 (3/5).
  • Over 1.5 goals @ 1.40 (2/5).
  • Both teams to score @ 1.80 (4/5).

Bournemouth vs Leicester Prediction & Match Preview

Bournemouth vs Leicester
England – Premier League
Date: Sunday, 12 July 2020
Kick-off at 19:00 UK/ 20:00 CET
Venue: Vitality Stadium (Bournemouth).
Leicester is trying to stay within the Champion League spot in the table and will not likely make it easy for Bournemouth trying to climb out of the relegation zone.

Bournemouth vs Leicester Match preview

Bournemouth is winless in their last nine league fixtures with just two draws in it. They were on a five-game losing streak in the campaign until their last match.
In their previous encounter, the host faced Tottenham, and the match ended in a goalless draw.
The Cherries have only 4 wins in their 17 home matches so far this campaign season. Winless in their recent four attempts at home, the host doesn’t enjoy the ground advantage in the encounter.
Leicester visited Arsenal in their previous encounter and shared the spoils with the Gunners in a 1-1 scoreline in which Aubameyang and Vardy scored a goal each for either side.
They had only one loss in their last five clashes post lockdown, which was on the road against Everton and is unbeaten in their last two clashes.
With 7 wins and 6 losses classifying their away record this season in the campaign so far, the Foxes will probably be the favorites to win regarding the host’s poor form at home.

Bournemouth vs Leicester Head-to-head (h2h)

  • Three of their recent six fixtures have ended in a draw.
  • Their previous encounter gave a 3-1 home win for the Foxes.
  • Both teams have scored in three of the last five matches.
  • The host is unbeaten at home in the past four meetings.

Bournemouth vs Leicester Prediction

Bournemouth is at the bottom part of the table with a huge record of winless fixtures in their league schedule this season and is 31 points behind the visitors in the league table.
Meanwhile, James Vardy and Co. have dropped some points with no series damage to their position at the top part of the table.
The visitors need all three points to stay at the top part of the table as the competition for the Champions League spot in the table has tightened its grip lately.
The Foxes have a troubled form at home, but their recent results in overall suggest that they will perform well against a relegation prone team.
In the reverse fixture, Leicester had a 3-2 win at home against the Cherries. Since Eddie Howe’s team was able to score on the road, they might be able to slot in one at home too.
The away win in full-time with 1.66 odds will be the best bet for the punters in the clash. The tip for a BTTS with 1.80 odds will also come in handy for the ninety minutes.

Bournemouth vs Leicester Betting tips

  • Leicester to win @ 1.66 (4/6).
  • Both teams to score @ 1.80 (4/5).

Tottenham vs Arsenal Prediction & Match Preview

Tottenham vs Arsenal Prediction, Tips and Match Preview of the English Premier League match on Sunday, 12 July 2020. Kick-off 16:30 UK/ 17:30 CET at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London).
The last 25 North London derbies had no goalless draw in it 17 of those clashes saw both teams score in each game.

So, the action seems unavoidable in this much-anticipated encounter between the Spurs and the Gunners.
Spurs lost just once in their recent five league clashes which happened to be away at Sheffield United.
Harry Kane and Co. seem to have trouble only when playing away from home as their previous encounter ended in a goalless draw in the visit to Bournemouth.
The Spurs are unbeaten in their last three home matches with a double win in it.
Jose Mourinho’s boys have kept the clean sheet in both the wins and two of the three goals within the two wins were own goals and Harry Kane scored the remaining one goal.
Arteta did a superb job by rallying his team to four unbeaten games in the league schedule with the 1-1 draw at home against Leicester last time out ruining their fourth winning streak. All three wins post lockdown have seen them keep a clean sheet.
Arsenal is on a two-game winning streak in the league away matches.
They lost two away matches after league restart, which was surprisingly the only defeat within the last ten away fixtures across all major competitions.
The Spurs are unbeaten in their last four h2h meetings with the Gunners, but it will be the first time they host Mikel Arteta’a squad in the league.

Tottenham vs Arsenal Head-to-head (h2h)

  • The last two meetings have ended in a draw.
  • The Spurs have recorded three of the last five wins.
  • Three of their recent four fixtures have seen both teams score.
  • The host is unbeaten in their last four clashes at home.

Tottenham vs Arsenal Prediction

Tottenham is much closer to taking all three points from the clash than the Gunners. The Spurs exhibited delightful form at home post lockdown, including a draw against Manchester United. Besides, they are on a two-game winning streak at home.
In the meantime, Arsenal is also on a two-game winning streak in their away games as mentioned earlier. But the two defeats against Manchester City and Brighton recently show their troubles when playing away from home against stronger teams.
Besides, the Gunners have only 4 wins in their 17 away fixtures so far, and playing at home is the strongest suit for Harry Kane and Co. in the Premier League with just 4 losses coming within their 17 away fixtures until now this season.
The double chance favoring Tottenham with 1.44 odds will be the best bet for the punters. Since both sides have sturdy scoring legs like Harry Kane, Eriksen, Aubameyang, Lacazette, etc, the tip for BTTS with 1.60 odds will come in handy for the ninety minutes.

Tottenham vs Arsenal Betting tips

  • Double chance: Tottenham or Draw @ 1.44 (4/9).
  • Both teams to score @ 1.60 (3/5).

Messi tees up victory as Barcelona cling on to fading title hopes

Lionel Messi made it 20 assists for the season in Barcelona's stodgy 1-0 win over Real Valladolid on Saturday, even as his team's La Liga challenge appears almost over.
Messi teed up Arturo Vidal's winner at Jose Zorilla to become the first player to provide 20 assists in Spain's top flight since Xavi Hernandez in 2009.
Victory for Barca means Real Madrid cannot clinch the title on Monday by beating Granada but only an incredible collapse will prevent them putting their name on the trophy later in the week.
If they beat Granada, Madrid will win La Liga by prevailing at home to Villarreal on Thursday, regardless of Barcelona's results.
Overall, Madrid need only five points from their remaining three matches to secure their third La Liga title in eight years.
"We are doing things that deserve more than where we are," said Barca coach Quique Setien.
"To win La Liga, I don't know, because our rival is winning everything."
Yet even as Barca's turbulent domestic campaign draws to a close, Messi continues to shine.
His delightful pass for Vidal in the 15th minute, a scoop between two Valladolid defenders, triggered more remarkable milestones.
As well as matching the best La Liga total for assists by one player in the last 11 years, Messi extends his own career-best number of assists in a single league season.
He also becomes only the second player in the 21st century from the five major European leagues to hit 20 goals and 20 assists in the same campaign, after Thierry Henry in 2002-03.
Messi has halted negotiations to extend his current contract, which expires in 2021, perhaps to express frustration with the running of the club.
As Barcelona's title challenge has wilted, Setien's position has come under scrutiny too, despite him only taking over in January.
But he was bold against Valladolid, deploying a 3-5-2 formation, with Nelson Semedo and Jordi Alba as wing-backs and the versatile Sergi Roberto dropping into the back three.
Luis Suarez started on the bench but replaced Antoine Griezmann at half-time, the Frenchman enduring one of his quieter displays before having to go off injured.
"He came off because he had a problem," Setien said. "It was him who asked for the change."
After playing Messi behind Suarez and Griezmann against Villarreal on Sunday, Setien appears to be experimenting, perhaps with an eye on the Champions League's resumption next month.
Or he may be making the best of a stretched squad that appears to be feeling the effects of fatigue. Setien only named five outfield players on the bench.
"We've had a lot of games, a lot of wear and a lot of players playing a lot of minutes. It's not rocket science," he said.
"When you're tired, you lose more balls, make bad decisions. It's normal."
The system worked well in the first half but Barca's problem of converting possession into chances remained and Valladolid grew in confidence late on.
Defeat leaves Valladolid 14th but survival looks all-but secured, with seven points between them and the bottom three.
Griezmann snatched at an early finish inside the box before Vidal showed him how it was done.
Messi recovered the ball on the edge of the area and after receiving it back from Semedo, scooped it through to Vidal, who gathered and unleashed all in one movement to find the far corner.
Valladolid's Kike Perez raced clear of Gerard Pique but lost his footing at the crucial moment before Messi weaved through but drove wide.
Marc-Andre Ter Stegen had to make two saves in the second half as Valladolid pushed, the first from an Enes Unal header and the second in injury-time, after Sandro Ramirez was allowed space at the back post.
Earlier, Celta Vigo surrendered a valuable point in the relegation battle by conceding in the 91st-minute to Osasuna, Jose Arnaiz sealing a 2-1 win.
Defeat means Celta stay four points clear of the bottom three but having played a game more than those below them.

Ronaldo's penalty double edges Juve closer to title in Atalanta draw

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two penalties as Juventus snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw against Atalanta on Saturday to take a massive step towards a ninth straight Serie A title.
Lazio's 2-1 loss to Sassuolo earlier in the day gave Atalanta, on an 11-match winning streak heading into the game, the chance to move second and cut the gap to Juve to six points.
But despite trailing twice and being outplayed for long periods, Maurizio Sarri's Juventus moved eight points clear at the top with six matches remaining as Ronaldo took his tally to 28 league goals this season.
"We can't make calculations yet, we can't take our foot off the gas until we are mathematically champions," said Juve captain Leonardo Bonucci.
It was an ultimately frustrating outing for Atalanta who stay third, nine points off the pace, after conceding both spot-kicks for handball.
"What are we meant to do, cut our arms off? You can at most put your arms in front of your body," Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini told DAZN.
"The interpretation of the rule is not the same here as elsewhere. Other countries don't give penalties like that.
"These are the rules here, fine."
Juve started brightly but it did not take long for the visitors to take control and start to dominate possession.
Josip Ilicic fired the first real chance of the game wide, but Atalanta grabbed the lead in the 16th minute, scoring for the 25th consecutive match in all competitions.
Papu Gomez was the creator, wriggling free in midfield before exchanging passes with Duvan Zapata before sliding the ball back for the Colombian to drill home his 15th league goal of the campaign.
The goal made Atalanta the first Serie A club in almost 70 years to have three players score 15 times in a league season, with Zapata joining Ilicic and Luis Muriel in reaching the mark.
Zapata was proving a real nuisance for Juve, with Matthijs de Ligt doing well to block another goalbound effort, before the striker narrowly failed to connect with Timothy Castagne's cross.
Paulo Dybala almost levelled for the hosts against the run of play, but his volley was deflected wide.
The reigning champions were gifted a route back into the game nine minutes after half-time as Marten de Roon was penalised for handling Dybala's cross.
Ronaldo stepped up to score his 27th Serie A goal this term, drawing him within two of Lazio's Ciro Immobile at the top of the goalscoring charts.
Atalanta continued to attack in search of the victory they needed to boost their title hopes, but shortly after substitute Muriel fired a free-kick into the wall, Malinovskiy's low strike flicked the base of the post.
Ronaldo almost put Juve in front with 10 minutes to play, but visiting goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini made an excellent save to keep out the Portuguese star's half-volley.
Malinovskiy did put Atalanta back into the lead in the 81st minute, as Muriel picked out his fellow sub to hammer a fierce shot past Wojciech Szczesny.
But Atalanta shot themselves in the foot again in the 90th minute, as Ronaldo fired in his second spot-kick after Muriel was penalised for handball.
Earlier on Saturday, Lazio's title dream suffered yet another setback as Francesco Caputo's injury-time header grabbed Sassuolo a late victory at the Stadio Olimpico.
The capital club sit eight points adrift of Juve in their tilt at a first league title since 2000, but have suffered three straight defeats.
"Talking about the Scudetto was always a bit of a stretch and we have to look reality in the face," coach Simone Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.
"That doesn't mean we will give up. Next season, in the Champions League, we'll be able to rotate the squad more."
Luis Alberto gave Lazio a first-half lead, but that was their only shot on target in the match as Sassuolo fought back through goals from Giacomo Raspadori, on his full league debut, and Caputo.
Roma strengthened their grip on a Europa League slot with a comfortable 3-0 win at relegation-threatened Brescia.

Manchester City to learn fate of Champions League ban appeal

Manchester City's Abu-Dhabi project and the future of UEFA's financial fair play (FFP) rules face a pivotal day on Monday when the Court of Arbitration for Sport delivers its verdict on City's appeal against a two-season ban from European competitions.
The stakes could not be higher for the English side, who have always strongly denied any wrongdoing over allegations they deliberately inflated the value of income from sponsors with links to the Abu Dhabi United Group, also owned by City owner Sheikh Mansour, to avoid falling foul of FFP regulations between 2012 and 2016.
In February, UEFA imposed a fine of 30 million euros ($32 million, £25 million) on City as well as suspending them from European competitions for the next two seasons.
Since Sheikh Mansour's takeover 12 years ago, City's fortunes have been transformed from perennially living in the shadow of local rivals Manchester United to winning four Premier League titles in the past eight years among 11 major trophies.
Yet the prize that has eluded them is the one the Abu Dhabi project most desires - the Champions League.
No matter the outcome on Monday, City will have the chance to do so in August as they resume their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 lead over Real Madrid from the first leg of their last 16 tie.
That could be the last chance for some of City's biggest names to win the Champions League for the club as a two-year ban would have severe consequences for the club's finances.
Manager Pep Guardiola's contract runs until the end of the 2020/21 season and the Catalan is unlikely to still be in charge in two years' time.
Star players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling are also unlikely to want to waste two of their peak years without Champions League football.
"Two years would be long. One year is something I might be able to cope with," De Bruyne told Het Laatste Nieuws in June.
It would still take huge fees from rival clubs to tempt City to sell, but they may be forced to downsize to gain re-entry to the Champions League even after any ban is over.
City made 93 million euros from UEFA prize money and TV rights from last season's Champions League, with gate receipts and extra sponsorship revenue from Europe's premier club competition added to that tally.
It would be almost impossible for the club to lose that level of revenue for two years and remain FFP-compliant without cutting costs on transfer fees and wages, or selling players.
Even more painfully for City, Manchester United could be one of the major beneficiaries of their exclusion.
City are comfortably second in the Premier League table, but if they are banned, fifth will be good enough to qualify for the Champions League.
United are currently in fifth with Chelsea or Leicester the other sides likely to profit.
The likes of Arsenal and Tottenham could also look to benefit next season if City's ban is upheld in full.
Losing such a high-profile case would also cause major embarrassment to the legacy of the City project.
It is no secret that one of the major motivations behind the billions invested is to promote a positive image of Abu Dhabi around the world.
That image will for some be forever tarnished if City are found not only to have flouted FFP, but deliberately misled UEFA in doing so.
But the stakes are also high for European football's governing body.
Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain have already successfully won an appeal at CAS against UEFA reopening a FFP investigation into the French champions.
The system which limits clubs to not losing more than 30 million euros with exceptions for some costs such as youth development and women's teams over a three-year period has helped cut debt across European football.
But its detractors point to the fact it maintains the status quo with traditional giants like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich always enjoying bigger budgets thanks to their large global fanbases.
Should UEFA lose another case, questions will be asked over how effectively FFP can ever be enforced at the highest level of the game.

FC Cincinnati 0, Columbus Crew SC 4 | MLS is Back Tournament Match Recap

Columbus Crew SC took an emphatic Hell is Real rivalry victory to open their Group E slate, cruising to a 4-0 rout of FC Cincinnati on Saturday behind a Gyasi Zardes brace, a stunner from Lucas Zelarayan and an insurance tally from Youness Mokhtar.
Zelarayan put Columbus up in the 27th minute with the goal of the tournament so far — an absolutely gorgeous free-kick golazo that he curled past Orange and Blue goalkeeper Przemysław Tyton and into the net.
Zardes then added the second just three minutes later, as the FC Cincy backline completely lost track of the US international striker, who took a through ball from Mokhtar and beat Tyton for an easy finish.
Zardes made it 3-0 with his second in the 49th minute, cashing in a point-blank look off a pinpoint cross from Zelarayan, who dominated a FC Cincy's midfield throughout the evening. Mokhtar got in on the action on the hour mark, slotting home another easy finish from inside the area to push it to 4-0, which would mercifully stand as the final scoreline.

They don't get much prettier than that first-half free kick from Zelarayan, and his assist on Zardes' second was almost as pretty. Simply put, the Argentine has been electric in his short-lived time in MLS so far, and if he keeps up this form the Crew have the makings of an Eastern Conference force beyond just this tournament.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: You could give the caveat that it came against FC Cincinnati's notoriously porous defense, but it was a dominant showing from the Crew, who were billed by many as a preseason darling and look poised to make good on those predictions. For FC Cincy, it was more of the same shambolic defending that plagued their expansion season. If there's any benefit of the doubt to give, it's that they've just started implementing a new philosophy under recently hired head coach Jaap Stam — something that was always going to take some time. But that won't be of any help in this tournament.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: It was a proud moment for US men's national team head coach Gregg Berhalter, who was in attendance for the match, and got to witness the professional debut of his son Sebastian, who was brought on as a substitute in the 77th minute and finished out the contest.
  • YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED: Zelarayan and Zardes got the goals, but if there was an unsung hero for Columbus it was probably Darlington Nagbe — a player who is used to that role.

Atlanta United 0, New York Red Bulls 1 | MLS is Back Tournament Match Recap

The New York Red Bulls picked up a huge result to open Group E play against Atlanta United on Saturday, taking a 1-0 victory courtesy of an early goal from Florian Valot and a highlight-reel late save from goalkeeper David Jensen.
Valot got RBNY off to a dream start just four minutes into the match, collecting a brilliant long ball from Kaku and finding himself on a breakaway against Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan before coolly slotting home the finish.
RBNY nearly doubled that advantage in the 25th minute off a cross from Kyle Duncan that found Daniel Royer crashing the back post completely unmarked, but Guzan made the reaction save to keep Atlanta within one goal.
Atlanta came inches from getting an equalizer from George Bello in the 41st minute, as the Homegrown left back unleashed a laser shot on goal from a difficult angle that he placed expertly over Jensen, only to see it hit the crossbar.
RBNY had a handful of chances to extend the lead in the second half, but couldn't quite capitalize, thanks in part to some excellent goalkeeping from Guzan. The Five Stripes nearly found the equalizer at the death, but a snap header from Adam Jahn was denied by a phenomenal sprawling save from Jensen, allowing RBNY to see out the 1-0 result.

Guzan has a solid shout even in a losing effort, but scoring the game-winner is always a good way to get the honors. Valot gets the nod for this one.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: RBNY talked about how excited they were to resume play against Atlanta leading up to the match, and they played like it, coming out firing and looking the sharper side for much of the night. It's a huge result for Chris Armas and Co. On the other side, it's an inauspicious start to tournament play for Atlanta, but we'll hold off on formulating any rash conclusions until they log more games.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Valot's tally was the only goal and stood as the game-winner, making it the easy choice anyway, but spare a thought for that ball from Kaku. That's a world-class dime if there ever was one.
  • YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED: There are many new broadcast wrinkles being introduced during the tournament, with a great glimpse of one of them coming in this contest as nearby cameras provided an inside look at Atlanta United head coach Frank de Boer giving instructions during a hydration break in the first half.

Seattle Sounders 0, San Jose Earthquakes 0 | MLS is Back Tournament Match Recap

It wasn't for lack of chances, but the San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders finished their Group B opener at the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando in a 0-0 deadlock on Friday.
San Jose dominated possession throughout the first half, and found a handful good looks on goal, but either saw them trickle wide or get denied by Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei each time. Seattle, meanwhile, had perhaps its best look of the first half in the 28th minute when midfielder Cristian Roldan got behind the Quakes' back line and fired a shot that was saved by San Jose 'keeper Daniel Vega, who put in a solid overall performance of his own between the posts.
San Jose nearly broke through in the 70th minute off a distance shot from Jackson Yueill that took a deflection and appeared bound for goal, but Frei came through again with a highlight-reel diving save to preserve the scoreless deadlock.
Seattle nearly found a late go-ahead goal in the 84th minute after Raul Ruidaz found himself with an open look off a cross from Kelvin Leerdam, but the Peruvian couldn't quite get his shot past a charging Vega, and the match finished scoreless.

Seattle very well could have found themselves taking no points in this one if not for Frei's heroics. The veteran goalkeeper has long been one of the steadiest in MLS, and put in another standout shift in his team's first game back.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: The Quakes were the underdog coming into the match, and have plenty of positives to build on, but they'll likely feel disappointed not to have taken all three points given how they dictated most of the game. Seattle absorbed a lot of pressure, but they had their chances too, so the hope will be the finishing touch will come with time as they knock off the rust.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Frei's 70th-minute denial on Yueill was one of the best highlights of the match, and might have rescued Seattle from opening tournament play with a disappointing defeat.
  • YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED: There have now been four games since MLS resumed, none of which have featured a goal in the first half, with Orlando City SC the only team scoring more than once. It's understandable, considering the lengthy layoff as teams try to reestablish their fitness and sharpness, so expect that trend to change as we get deeper into the tournament.
