Emi Buendia: A player reborn

The Norwich midfielder has found his form after a spell on the sidelines.

As the Autumn weeks ticked into Winter wilderness, Argentine showboater Emiliano Buendia was going through a spell of tepid form, compounded with being hooked on the hour mark against Watford, the 23-year old a figure of discontent.
Buendia would ensure a spell on the sidelines, just 24 minutes in three matches as November turned to December.
But, exactly one month on from that terrible night against the sting of the Hornets, Buendia has reshaped himself to manufacture the most chances in a calendar month since Opta records began - a worthy contender for Premier League Player of the Month, despite barely featuring in the first two matches of December.

Point to prove

The former Argentina Under-20 international from Mar del Plata was reintroduced to the Norwich starting eleven against Sheffield United.
After an early period in the campaign of sulking and stropping on the pitch, Buendia had clearly filtered his frustrations of Norwich's season thus far into a desire of pressing around the midfield areas and getting on the ball as much as possible.
He would register no less than a staggering 114 touches against the Blades, completing five key passes in the process - his number of touches on the ball totalled 25 more than his nearest teammate or opponent.
Although his time in possession dwindled against high-flying Leicester City in the next game, Buendia averaged a key pass every 12 touches. This time, he would equate one of his five into an assist for Teemu Pukki in a solid 1-1 draw.
And against Wolves, Buendia provided an unstoppable creative masterclass - 9 key passes across 90 minutes with 98 touches - over 25% more than any other player on the pitch. Norwich still couldn't register three points, though.

22 to 23

Whilst Norwich continued to struggle for form as the Christmas turkey settled, Buendia maintained his solo quest for survival, again producing five key passes against Aston Villa on Boxing Day - just hours after his 23rd birthday.
But he has since provided assists in consecutive games to earn points against Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace - his tackle and through ball versus the former synonymous of Buendia's form over the last month.
Once again, in both matches, Buendia enjoyed more touches of the ball than any other player in his team, formulating a third assist in just five matches.
To put into context Buendia's improved form since being dropped from the starting eleven, the Argentine has developed 5.2 key passes per game in the last six - double his previous tally before November which was still third in the top-flight.
That figure is a 40% improvement on Kevin De Bruyne's 3.7 key passes per game for the season. A key pass every 17 minutes.

My top 11 best MLS kits of the past decade | J. Sam Jones

The arc of kit design in MLS this decade ran from the retrospectively unappealing all-around design of 2010 through 2012 or so, to the often overly-simple templates of the end of the decade.
It’s not really unsurprising that many of the kits on this list fall in the middle of that transition or stand out entirely among those years. It’s also not surprising that many of the choices are multicolored secondary kits. Variety makes everything a little less dull. The monochromatic kits that did make the list demanded an element that made them stand out among the fray.
It’s also not surprising that none of these kits are all red. Why is, like, half the league all-red?
And yes, we did leave your favorite off on purpose.

Toronto FC secondary kit, 2016-17

Toronto fans bristled a bit at the idea of including any shade of blue in their kit, but it’s hard to argue with the results. The white, red and blue became one of the sharpest and most distinguishable secondary kits in MLS, and they’ll forever be associated with a side that came inches from an MLS Cup in 2016, then turned into a treble-winning juggernaut the following year.

Sporting KC third kit, 2013

Sporting's famous black argyle kit | Sporting Kansas City
I’m not a fan but I was also told that I would be quickly tried and executed by the MLS community if I didn’t include them. Argyle is… it’s definitely a pattern. Look, y’all want the kit embodiment of a terrible Vampire Weekend song. Who am I to judge, except a person with a platform on MLSsoccer dot com that you don’t have because you’re wrong?

Vancouver Whitecaps third kit, 2012

This might be polarizing, but that’s exactly why it’s on the list. It’s very easy to recoil at the sight of the brown and light blue, but it’s just as easy to instantly love it. If you’re in the latter camp then you probably have no issues with throwing hands or mean internet words to defend it.
This is one of the most distinct kits of the decade and it’s a color scheme that stands out even further in a growing sea of white, black and gray.

Colorado Rapids secondary kit, 2017

The biggest question when deciding if Colorado’s state flag-inspired second kit would make the list was which version to pick rather than if it would make the list. I’m partial to the blue-sleeved edition, but I won’t argue against any of its predecessors.
It always felt like one of the league’s most instantly recognizable kits and it’s a shame it’s not with us anymore. For now, anyway.

Columbus Crew SC primary kit, 2017

Columbus have always stood out in all-yellow. You can count the number of teams who wear all-yellow on one hand, if you can think of any others at all besides Borussia Dortmund on occasion. The kit got a major boost with the Crew’s rebrand, when the checkerboard pattern now found on the club crest appeared on the shirt’s side panel. It’s one of the best tops in league history.

Philadelphia Union third kit, 2013

The Union in their Bethlehem Steel tributes | USA Today Sports Images
There’s a disease in design critique right now that causes people to see boring things and say “clean.” This an example of simplistic and direct actually being clean without being mind-numbing.
Philly’s retro throwback to Pennsylvania soccer forbears Bethlehem Steel FC (the 1911-1930 edition, not the USL team that was recently rebranded as Philadelphia Union II) integrated their excellent crest into a stunning design scheme that even got the sponsor to make noticeable changes for the sake of the cause. It’s a classic.

New England Revolution primary kit, 2016

The Revolution in their 2016 look | USA Today Sports Images
The Revs took a small leap forward when they switched from a navy monochrome look to white shorts. They jumped to the top of the pack with their 2016 shirt. The middle striping feels instantly iconic. It’s a clear member in the pantheon of first kits this decade. In part for the all-around improvements and mostly because it just looks excellent.

Atlanta United primary kit, 2017

ATLUTD after their 2018 MLS Cup victory | USA Today Sports Images
The crest and the name had Atlanta’s first fans worried. If the kits were going to be half as bland, the entire identity of the team might be doomed. Seriously. Things seemed bleak for a team that the rest of the league’s followers had largely considered an unworthy addition.
Then they dropped one of the best primary kits in league history. When the kit design becomes the team’s nickname, you know you’ve made something relatively iconic.

Houston secondary kit, 2018-19

Tommy McNamara sports the Dynamo's "tequila sunrise" tribute | USA Today Sports Images
Pure, uncut Houston. Some people prefer the V-striped front of the prior secondary kit and they’re not necessarily wrong, but the stripes on this kit immediately have you thinking of the incredible 1970s Astros jerseys that might be the most recognizable piece of culture to come out of H-Town not named Beyonce. If you can call it a monochromatic kit, it’s one of the best of its kind this decade.

SKC secondary kit, 2014

Benny Feilhaber in Sporting's hoops | USA Today Sports Images
Y’all were gonna be mad about the argyle kits when the hoop kits were sitting right there? SKC’s color scheme makes any combination of design and pattern difficult to mess up. When those elements stand out as truly excellent in comparison to their predecessors, you have a classic.
It’s not the best of the decade though. My personal best of the decade is…

Portland Timbers primary kit, 2019

Diego Valeri models PTFC's current look | Portland Timbers
When there are so many teams on the planet and only so many people making kits, some uniforms feel a bit mailed-in. This is the opposite of that. The white and gold trim on the sleeves and color, the multi-striped socks and the dampened hoop design are stunning.
We can fight about which of Portland’s perpetually great kits are the best this decade, but I’m standing by the latest edition. Especially the version with white shorts. This is the kind of kit that makes you feel things. I am thoroughly evoked. Sure, Portland didn’t win MLS Cup this year, but they looked far better than the team who did. Whoever that was.

Medien: Ex-BVB-Flirt Zaha beim FC Bayern angeboten

PSG : Kylian Mbappé à Liverpool, game over

Arsenal make wasteful Leeds pay to reach FA Cup fourth round

Arsenal made Leeds pay for their profligacy with a host of wasted first-half chances to reach the FA Cup fourth round with a 1-0 victory on Monday thanks to Reiss Nelson's winner.
Leeds will hope more regular visits to the Emirates are in store as they top the Championship and showed why by dominating the first 45 minutes.
However, Patrick Bamford struck the bar, while Arsenal stand-in goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made smart saves to deny Jack Harrison and Ezgjan Alioski.
Arsenal improved markedly after the break and secured back-to-back wins for new manager Mikel Arteta when Nelson bundled home from close range 10 minutes into the second half.
Arteta made just four changes to the side that beat Manchester United 2-0 on New Year's Day to kickstart his reign, although captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed out through illness.
But the Gunners looked more like the lacklustre outfit that preceded Arteta's arrival this season in the early stages as Leeds stroked the ball around confidently.
On-loan Manchester City winger Harrison twice stung the palms of Martinez either side of Bamford's strike coming back off the woodwork.
Alioski then forced the best save of all from the Argentine as he met a teasing Harrison cross at the back post.
Arteta's half-time team talk roused a response from Arsenal as Alexandre Lacazette also hit the crossbar from a free-kick.
Lacazette was captain for the night in Aubameyang's absence and led from the front after the break as he also had a hand in the winner.
The Frenchman was played in by Nicolas Pepe and his deflected cross found its way to Nelson to convert just his second Arsenal goal.
Nelson was then replaced by another talented youngster in Gabriel Martinelli, who came closest to adding to Arsenal's lead with a low shot that was well saved by Illan Meslier.
However, one goal was enough to secure the Gunners a fourth round trip to Bournemouth.

Napoli 1-3 Inter: Lukaku double ends 22-year wait for San Paolo success

Inter tasted victory over Napoli at the San Paolo for the first time in a Serie A match since October 1997 thanks to Romelu Lukaku's double.
Romelu Lukaku scored a double as Inter comfortably beat Napoli 3-1 for their first Serie A win at the San Paolo in just over 22 years.
Inter were on Monday briefly replaced at the top of the league by Juventus, who downed Cagliari 4-0, but regained their spot at the summit with an impressive triumph.
Lukaku struck twice in the first half, the second coming thanks to a blunder from Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret, before Arkadiusz Milik halved the deficit in the 39th minute.
Lautaro Martinez made sure of the result in the second half, with the victory Antonio Conte's 100th as a coach in Serie A.
Giovanni Di Lorenzo was punished for an unfortunate slip in the 14th minute, as Lukaku latched onto the loose ball and raced forward to fire in off the left post.
Meret did well to deny Matias Vecino and Martinez but he undid his good work in the 33rd minute when he diverted Lukaku's powerful drive from 18 yards between his own legs and in.
Napoli stayed positive and, after Samir Handanovic just about kept out Lorenzo Insigne, Jose Callejon squared Piotr Zielinski's diagonal delivery into the six-yard box for Milik to tap home before the break.
The tempo dropped off in the second half but Inter again made Napoli pay for an error. Kostas Manolas was unable to clear Vecino's right-wing delivery and instead teed up Martinez to stab home with 62 minutes played.
Tempers flared when Fabian Ruiz forcefully kicked the ball into the Inter dugout, with Sebastiano Esposito and Antonio Conte going into the book for their reactions.
Insigne clipped the crossbar with a 20-yard free-kick as Napoli proved unable to spark a comeback with 15 minutes remaining.
Martinez almost doubled his tally in stoppage time but, after rounding Meret, was dispossessed by Di Lorenzo, who looked fortunate not to concede a penalty for his challenge.

What does it mean? Conte brings up his ton
Conte's first win as a Serie A coach came in October 2009 while in charge of Atalanta and he reached 100 victories in 145 matches. That is the quickest of any boss to have made their debut in the division from 1994-95 onwards. He will hope to keep up the impressive pace and lead Inter to their first Scudetto since 2010.
Lukaku looking sharp
Lukaku has been prolific away from home this season and now has 10 goals in his nine appearances on the road. He was a threat from the off and thoroughly deserved his brace.
A demerit for Napoli's keeper
After making decent saves from Vecino and Martinez, Meret committed a howler when he let Lukaku's stinging shot squirm through him to hand Inter a 2-0 lead.
What's next?
Inter will be without Milan Skriniar after he was shown a fifth yellow card of the season when they entertain Atalanta at San Siro on Saturday, while Napoli head to Lazio the same day.

Football travel guide: How to make a day trip to the Madrid derby

All you need to know if you fancy seeing Real Madrid take on Atlético at the Bernabéu

Real Madrid v Atlético Madrid
Date:
 Saturday, February 1st, 2020
Kick-off time: 4pm, Spanish time

Flights

LaLiga kick-off times are never confirmed until three or four weeks before the match is played – each game is played at a different time for television. That means it can be hard to plan a trip and book accommodation but, in the case of Real Madrid playing at home on a Saturday afternoon, it’s possible to go without staying over at all.
At 6.25am on the morning of Saturday, February 1st you can fly from Dublin to Madrid with Ryanair for €58.83, arriving into the Spanish capital at 10am.
That gives you plenty of time to either head straight out to the ground and enjoy some of the tapas bars and restaurants there or, even better, you can head to the city centre for a few hours before jumping on the metro out to the Bernabéu.
To return home, there is a Ryanair flight back to Dublin at 9.30pm Spanish time for €35.03, landing in Ireland at 11.10pm.
So, that’s return flights for just €93.86.

Getting to the ground

Unlike many modern stadiums which are located well outside the city, the Bernabéu sits within the city centre limits of Madrid on the Paseo de la Castellana.

Metro line 10 services the Santiago Bernabéu stop which is right across from the stadium and that is the best line to get from either Plaza de España or Tribunales in the city centre.
If you’re coming directly from the airport, metro line 8 is the best to take, getting off at Nuevos Ministerios. From there the Bernabéu is a 10 minute walk or one stop on line 10 which you can connect to at the station.

Tickets

Now comes the tricky part. Tickets for Real Madrid matches don’t go on sale to the general public until a few days beforehand on the club’s website which, incidentally, is a particularly easy website to buy tickets from. While for most games you can buy a ticket at the ground, that’s almost never the case for the Madrid derby. In this case tickets go on sale at https://www.realmadrid.com/en/tickets on January 27th. This match is also one of the most expensive of the season at the Bernabéu so expect to pay more than €100 for a ticket, unless you want to sit up in the gods.
Alternatively, if you were planning a trip to see Real Madrid play a different team, tickets can be bought for as little as €30.

Want to make a weekend of it?

With five games taking place on Sunday, February 2nd, there are a number of options around Spain if you’re looking to take in a second match. On this particular weekend you could even combine seeing Real Madrid at the Bernabéu and Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
Barça play Levante at home at 9pm on the Sunday evening. Getting from Madrid to Barcelona is easy with direct trains on the half hour every hour on Sunday mornings, taking around three hours to get there. Booking via www.thetrainline.com is simple as the website is in English and generally offers very good value. On Sunday mornings a single ticket ranges from €67.50 to €76.25.
Alternatively, there are flights at 6.30am, 9.05am and 11.55am with Vueling, all for less than €50 which will get you to Barcelona in just over an hour.
Tickets for the Nou Camp are easy to get – for the Levante match they are on sale on the Barcelona website at the moment, starting at €59.
The late kick-off means you will need somewhere to stay in Barcelona and the cheapest flight back to Dublin the following afternoon is at 12.40pm with Vueling for €80.
