The current MLS Supporters’ Shield leaders will host last year’s runaway winners when Atlanta United meet Toronto FC Saturday afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Five Stripes have lost just once in their last 11 games and have a four-point cushion atop the league table, while Toronto have won back-to-back games for the first time this season and the now-healthy Reds appear to be on a climb up the Eastern Conference standings.

Each of the first two meetings between Atlanta and Toronto have ended in 2-2 draws.

Atlanta United

Atlanta (14-4-5) halted the Montreal Impact’s strong run of form at Stade Saputo, winning 2-1last Saturday night.

Josef Martinez continued his torrid scoring pace, netting a brace to increase his total to a remarkable 24 goals in 23 games. That moves him within three goals of the MLS regular-season record held by Roy Lassiter, Chris Wondolowski and Bradley Wright-Phillips, as Atlanta extended their unbeaten streak to four games.

“There’s nothing else to do when a player performs like that,” Tata Martino said of Martinez. “We just hope it lasts the entire season. When a goal scorer is performing at such a high level, you just have to let him be.”

Toronto FC

Toronto FC (6-11-4) made it consecutive league wins over the Chicago Fire and four victories in a row in all competitions when they defeated the Fire, 3-0, at BMO Field Saturday night.

Jozy Altidore opened the scoring on a rebound, his first league goal since bagging a brace in a 3-1 home win over Real Salt Lake in March. Twenty minutes later, the in-form Jonathan Osoriomade it 2-0 and Sebastian Giovinco clinched the win with a deflected strike one minute from full time.

“[The game against Atlanta] comes at a good time. We’re trending in the right direction, had our best half I think of probably the season in-league in the second half last game,” Greg Vanney said. “I thought our rhythm came back, some of the swagger that we know of our group started to arrive again.”

United States vs Brazil: Final game of Tournament of Nations sees historic rivals faceoff to end tournament

The United States and Brazil square-off in what could be title deciding game in the 2018 version of the Tournament of Nations.

Depending what occurs in the earlier game between Australia and Brazil, this match between the United States and Brazil, could end up being a winner take all for the 2018 Tournament of Nations.

Brazil looking to avenge last year

When these two teams met in last year's tournament, the United States scored three goals in the last ten minutes to snatch a 4-3 victory over the Brazilians. This result was then followed by a 6-1 pounding by Australia which vaulted them to the top, and Brazil to the bottom, Brazil will want to make sure this doesn't happen again this time around, and I have every reason to believe it will not. Unlike last year, Brazil is coming off of a win vs Japan. They will also more than likely be a little more organized come the end of the game this year.

This Brazil team has managed to win a game this year, something they weren't able to do at last year's tournament. This combined with the fact that the World Cup is on the horizon, I would expect Brazil to start to play their best soccer and figure out what their best lineup is. They might be starting to figure things out, which is not only scary for the United States on Thursday, but if they really do figure things out and have a plan going forward, it will be scary for everybody come 2019. 

United States looking for better performance in final game

Despite earning a draw against Australia on Saturday, they did not play a good game. Nobody really had a standout performance, and yet despite this, they were able to hold a very very good Australia team to a 1-1 draw. This may not seem like it, but that's a very important result not just for this tournament but in their preparations for next Summer's World Cup. Finding ways to win or get a result against good opposition when you don't play your best game is something that every team needs to be good at, because one bad game that results in a loss at the World Cup will either completely shatter your hopes of winning it, or significantly hurt your chances of doing so. That being said however, you can't let yourself have two bad performances in a row. It would be even more encouraging for Jill Ellis and the united States if they are able to bounce back against Brazil with not only a win, but a really good performance as well. 

One final note, this may be the last Tournament of Nations that we see until 2021. With both the World Cup and the Olympics taking place at around this time of year in 2019 and 2020 respectively, it either won't be worth, or even possible to have this tournament at this time the next two years. US Soccer could possibly schedule it for later in the year, but I personally think it would be best for these teams to not take part in these tournaments in years where other, bigger tournaments of much larger consequence are taking part. 

The United States take on Brazil on Thursday, August 2 at 8:30 PM EST, at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois. The match will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 and streamed on the Fox Sports Go app. 

Australia vs Japan preview: Asian Football Confederation rivalry renewed

A rematch of the 2018 AFC Asian Cup final between Australia and Japan will take place Thursday August 2 at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois at 5:45 PM EST. This will be the first match of two for the final day of the 2018 Tournament of Nations.

Japan will once again try to spoil Australia’s bid to win a tournament. Australia comes into the final match day tied with the USWNT (4 points) for the top spot in the standings. The USWNT holds the tiebreaker with five total goals against Australia’s four total goals. If Australia defeats Japan Thursday, it will force the USWNT to defeat Brazil in the second match. A Brazil victory or draw against the USWNT, will allow Australia to win their second consecutive Tournament of Nations title. If Japan is able to defeat Australia, the USWNT will claim the 2018 Tournament of Nations title with a win or draw. An Australia and Japan draw will give the USWNT a chance to win the tournament with a win or draw. If Australia and USA are tied on points after Thursday, tiebreakers classification go as follows: Goal difference; Goals scored; Head to head matchup; FIFA rankings. Brazil has an outside chance to win the tournament as well. If Brazil defeat the USWNT and Australia lose or draw Japan, Brazil will claim the 2018 Tournament of Nations title.

How they got here

Australia started off the tournament with a convincing 3-1 win over Brazil. Along with a Brazil own goal, Tameka Butt and Sam Kerr scored as the Westfield Matildas started their title defense. Chloe Logarzo goal against the USWNT gave Australia an early lead. Although, Lindsey Horan equalizer in the 90th minute spoiled an Australian victory against the World Champions.

Japan was still unable to earn their first victory in the tournament. First, losing to the USWNT 4-2 then losing 2-1 to Brazil. Mina Tanaka and Moeno Sakaguchi scored against the USWNT, while Rika Masuyascored Japan’s lone goal against Brazil. With the two losses Japan is eliminated from winning the tournament but can play spoiler to Australia.

Familiar AFC Foes

Australia and Japan will finish their 2018 Tournament of Nations campaign in the first match on Thursday. Australia will be looking for revenge against their AFC rivals Japan. In April, Japan defeated Australia in a thrilling 1-0 match to win their second AFC Asian Cup. Japan striker, Kumi Yokoyama scored the winner in the 84th minute. Australia pushed hard for the equalizer but failed to finish their chances. Australian defender Ellie Carpenter expressed to the Westfield Matildas website their desire for revenge, “I think there will be a bit of revenge on Thursday which all the girls are pumped to play and get that revenge back on that [Asian Cup] defeat.” The results of the Asian Cup tournament allowed Australia and Japan to punch their tickets to next year’s Women’s World Cup.

The schedule for the final matchday for 2018 Tournament of Nations will start with Australia vs. Japan at 5:45 PM EST Thursday afternoon on August 2. Followed by USA vs. Brazil at 8:30 PM EST Thursday evening. Both matches will be played at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois. USsoccer.com will stream the Australia/Japan match and the USWNT/Brazil match can be seen on FS1.

Por fin ganaron las Chivas en este semestre, luego de vencer a Monarcas Morelia en la Copa MX. Con doblete de Gael Sandoval y un verdadero golazo del juvenil, José Juan Macías; por los michoacanos, marcó Sebastián Ferreira y Roberto Meráz.

Desde el comienzo del partido, fue Chivas quien tomó el rol de protagonista para buscar el marco rival. Morelia, por su parte, tomaba las cosas con calma, se paró bien atrás y de a poco fue a robarle el balón al rival. La lluvia de nuevo se hacía presente en la cancha del estadio Akron, lo cual por momentos era intensa, y provocó un par de errores en jugadores de ambos bandos.

Mientras tanto, en la cancha, ambos equipos luchaban por mantener la posesión del esférico, pese a las condiciones del clima y el terreno de juego. El juego, pasados los 20 minutos se emparejó, Monarcas comenzó a tener más tiempo el balón, pero sin generar peligro en el marco de Miguel Jiménez.

Sin embargo, Chivas tuvo la primer jugada grande, con un penal marcado a los 24 minutos, donde el cobrador, Gael Sandoval, disparó fuerte y al centro para vencer al portero michoacano. Pero Morelia no se quedó de brazos cruzados y al minuto 31, respondió con una jugada de peligro de Gabriel Achilier, quien dentro del área se quitó su marca y disparó potente apenas a un lado de la cabaña local.

Aunque Chivas no dejaba de insistir sobre la meta de Gutiérrez, con llegadas de Gael y Eduardo López. La insistencia de Chivas dio fruto al minuto 42, cuando Gael Sandoval recibió por el costado izquierdo y recortó a su rival dentro del área para después cruzar con un potente disparo al arquero.

Pero el juego se asentó y por el resto de los minutos finales de la primera parte ya no se hicieron daño. Salvo una jugada polémica dentro del área de Chivas, cuando Benjamín Galindo se barrió a despejar un balón, éste le tocó en el brazo, pero el árbitro no quiso marcar el penal.

El comienzo del segundo tiempo fue reñido, con los dos equipos luchando palmo a palmo por el balón. Incluso por momentos metiendo demás la pierna. Aunque al inicio, los purépechas fueron intensos con las llegadas de peligro, el marco rojiblanco resistió el agobio rival.

Sin embargo, el esfuerzo de los visitantes se vio reflejado al minuto 64, cuando el paraguayo Carlos Ferreira empujó el balón tras un centro desviado por banda izquierda. Pero ahí no acabó, ya que tan sólo 6 minutos más tarde, ‘pipila’ Vilchis condujo por banda derecha, centró raso para que Roberto Meraz rematara dentro del área y anotara el empate.

Chivas respondió con una gran jugada individual de Eduardo López, quien filtró el balón al joven José Macías, mismo que estrelló en el cuerpo del guardameta canario. Pero el orgullo chiva se hizo presente al 83, con un portento de gol de José Juan Macías, quien se perfiló y disparó desde los linderos del área, con potencia y elevación para vencer al meta rival.

En la recta final del partido, Chivas seguía al frente pese a tener el marcador a su favor. Le quitó el balón a Morelia y lo desesperó. Ya sin mucho que destacar, el 'Rebaño' cerró el candado y se llevó los tres puntos en el torneo copero. 

Santa Fe, con 90 minutos para su clasificación

Independiente Santa Fe vs Rampla Juniors (URU) || Martes 31 de Julio de 2018 || 7:45 p.m || Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín || Transmite: Fox Sports || Partido de vuelta correspondiente a la segunda fase de la Copa Sudamericana || Luego del empate a Cero goles en Uruguay, los cardenales en su casa buscarán la clasificación a la siguiente ronda del certamen continental.

Independiente Santa Fe enfrentará a Rampla Juniors de nuevo por el partido de vuelta de la segunda fase de la Copa Sudamericana.

Con muchas dudas en sus tres últimas apariciones y sin goles anotados aún, el cuadro cardenal tendrá una difícil tarea de lograr la clasificación a la siguiente fase del certamen continental, los dirigidos por Guillermo Sanguinetti aún no conocen la victoria en esta nueva era y están en deuda ante su afición por lo mostrado hasta ahora.

90 minutos separan a Santa Fe de la victoria y la clasificación, pero también una derrota o un empate lo podrían dejar eliminado, pero los dirigidos por Sanguinetti son conscientes de la necesidad de mejorar y mostrar una evolución en este inicio de semestre un poco amargo para la hinchada, cuerpo técnico y jugadores, el mismo director técnico afirmó a los medios de comunicación que la hinchada puede estar tranquila y sus dirigidos estarán en un 100% en condiciones de afrontar este partido con seriedad y con la jerarquía que debe mostrar un grande como lo es Santa Fe.

La principal novedad será la reaparición de su goleador Wilson Morelo, quien no pudo actuar en las dos primeras fechas del rentado colombiano por suspensión y en quien ponen toda la fe y sus capacidades para romper el arco y así lograr no solo las primeras anotaciones del semestre sino también la clasificación a la siguiente ronda. Se espera que Santa Fe muestre un mejor juego, más orden y mayor colectividad, con los nuevos refuerzos en plenas condiciones, incluyendo al venezolano Luis Manuel Seijas, quien ante Atlético Nacional en la Liga local mostró un juego de entrega y sacrificio. 

Santa Fe también buscará seguir manteniendo los números en esta copa, donde ha participado en 33 juegos, con un balance de 11 victorias, 15 empates y tan solo 7 derrotas, con 36 goles a favor y 26 en contra.

La mayor goleada del cuadro capitalino se registró el 26 de agosto de 2010, Santa Fe 4 Deportivo Lara 0, marcador correspondiente a la edición de 2010 de la Copa Sudamericana. A su vez, frente a Botafogo obtuvo una resonante victoria 4-1, un 25 de octubre 2011.

Гильерме («Локомотив»)

30-летний дебютант РПЛ из «Анжи» Юрий Дюпин часто вступал в игру и уберег свои ворота в неприкосновенности, совершив парочку зрелищных сэйвов в концовке матча, Конюхов и Акинфеев отличились прекрасными действиями на линии ворот в заключительном матче тура, но предпочтение отдаем вратарю чемпионов – Гильерме. У кандидата в сборную России было немало работы по ходу матча, а уже в компенсированное время Маринато отразил удар Сильвестра Игбуна с «точки», не позволив «Локомотиву» начать сезон с поражения. По факту пенальти заработал сам Гильерме, но в той ситуации его вынудили защитники, выпустившие Слая на опасную позицию. Это не ошибка вратаря, который во всех эпизодах делал все для сохранения своих ворот в девственной неприкосновенности. И преуспел в этом, даже несмотря на поздний пенальти.

Защитники

Сергей Паршивлюк («Ростов»)

Качественная работа Сергея на правой бровке, на позиции латераля Паршивлюк отлично себя проявляет. Матч против «Ахмата» удался Сергею по всем статьям: 94% точных передач (46 из 49 пасов дошли до партнеров), 6 отборов (лучший показатель среди всех участников матча), а еще Паршивлюк записал на свой счет результативную передачу на голову Сигурдарсону, который забил победный мяч.

Самуэль Жиго («Спартак»)

Мощное впечатление произвел французский новичок «Спартака», и дело не только в забитом голе, который принес «красно-белым» победу в стартовом туре, хотя за это действие тоже отмечаем Жиго, который еще на сборах зарекомендовал себя как самый опасный спартаковец в чужой штрафной при исполнении стандартных положений. Самуэль не нервничал, не рисковал, грамотно начинал атаки, в том числе диагональными переводами на Комбарова, был просто королем верховых единоборств – 7 выигранных дуэлей в воздухе из 7-ми. 

Павел Аликин («Уфа»)

Учитывая то, что восемь матчей тура вобрали в себя всего лишь восемь забитых мячей, в удачно сыгравших защитниках не было недостатка. Наравне с Жиго из «Спартака» отмечаем Павла Аликина, сумевшего вместе с партнерами сдержать чемпионский «Локомотив», который снова остался без гола, как и в матче за Суперкубок России. Качественная игра на втором этаже, позиционная чуткость и постоянная готовность присмотреть за партнерами отличали Павла в игре против железнодорожников.

Кристиан Рамирес («Краснодар»)

«Краснодар» проиграл, но к этому парню с левого фланга даже у самых придирчивых экспертов и болельщиков не может быть никаких претензий. Рамирес успевал и в обороне, о чем свидетельствуют удачные отборы и единоборства, и в атаке, где дважды пробивал по чужим воротам и трижды отдавал обостряющие передачи на партнеров, которые приводили к созданию опасных моментов. В зоне Кристиана у «Краснодара» было перманентное преимущество над «Рубином», однако футбол, как известно, командная игра, и подвигов одного парня, особенно, если он левый защитник, недостаточно для успеха.

Полузащитники

Роман Зобнин («Спартак»)

Очень полезно и объемисто отработал Роман в игре с «Оренбургом»: тут вам и 92% точных передач, и опасные дальние удары, и качественное перекрытие зон в центре поля и на правом фланге. Такой игрок – золото для любого тренера. А как элегантно Зобнин оставил не у дел двух оппонентов в концовке матча и сохранил важный мяч для «Спартака»? Шик!

Далер Кузяев («Зенит»)

Зобнин не единственный представитель средней линии сборной России в символической сборной первого тура РПЛ. К словам Семака о том, что «Зениту» нужно укрепление каждой позиции следует относиться скептически хотя бы потому, что Кузяев начал матч против «Енисея» на скамейке запасных. Чтобы выйти и забить гол, который снял все вопросы о победителе, да и в принципе «Зенит» смог дожать новичков РПЛ после появления на поле Кузяева, который придал своей команде нужный вектор. 

Паул Антон («Анжи»)

Еще один джокер, без чьего участия не случилось бы главной неожиданности тура – победы «Анжи» в Екатеринбурге. Вы наверняка наслышаны о тяжелой ситуации в махачкалинском клубе, так что победа над крепким «Уралом» сродни подвигу, особенно, если принять во внимание ход матча – соотношение ударов по воротам 21 на 3 в сторону «шмелей», а счет на табло – 0:1 в пользу «Анжи». Паул Антон, выйдя на замену, нанес 2 из 3-х ударов своей команды в этой игре, один из которых привел к голу. 

Олег Шатов («Зенит»)

В отличие от Зобнина и Кузяева, Шатову не удалось выступить на чемпионате мира, но с такой игрой Олег обязательно вернется в сборную в скором времени. В матче с «Енисеем» полузащитник напомнил себя образца тех времен, когда зажигал в атаке «Зенита» вместе с Данни и Халком. Умный, подвижный, всегда готовый к обостряющим действиям, Олег провел отличный матч в Тюмени.

Нападающие

Сердар Азмун («Рубин»)

Старт прошлого сезона Азмун полностью провалил. Да что там старт – почти две трети чемпионата ушли в песок. Зато новую кампанию Сердар начал с места в карьер, дважды отличившись в матче с «Краснодаром». Видимо, иранский форвард сумел поймать реваншистское настроение, и ему действительно есть за что реабилитироваться – и за прошлый клубный сезон, и за чемпионат мира, где удалось себя проявить на уровне Федора Смолова, который помог Азмуну забить второй мяч.

Артём Дзюба («Зенит»)

Дзюба, напротив, один из героев чемпионата мира. По крайней мере, для России. Артем сумел перенести тот настрой и огонь, с которым выходил против Саудовской Аравии, Египта, Испании и Хорватии на матч совершенно иного статуса – против «Енисея» в нейтральной Тюмени. Форвард поработал на славу и был вознагражден забитым мячом в концовке, который отметил, по уже сложившейся традиции, воинским приветствием.

Тренер

Сергей Томаров («Уфа»)

36-летний тренер, новое лицо в РПЛ, начал у руля «Уфы» с двух нулевых ничьих – против «Домжале» в Лиге Европы и против «Локомотива» в чемпионате России. «Уфа» провела хороший матч против действующих чемпионов, не растерялась и заставила себя уважать. Более того, по всем статистическим показателям поединок на «Нефтянике» оказался равным, хозяева не уступили ни во владении, ни в количестве ударов, ни по созданным моментам, а в некоторых компонентах даже превзошли железнодорожников. Тренеры в «Уфе» меняются, но команда остается верна себе – грамотная и управляемая.
