It is another turnpike tussle as a confident Philadelphia Union squad, fresh off an impressive 4-1 drubbing of Real Salt Lake, face arguably the best team in MLS at the moment, as the New York Red Bulls handed Atlanta United a 3-1 home loss Sunday night for their fourth win in a row.
New York have only lost once in 10 regular season home games against the Union (7W-2D), though the Union did get a 0-0 draw on their last visit (September 17, 2017).

New York Red Bulls

Jesse Marsch promised a heavyweight showdown Sunday night and the clash between the Five Stripes and the Red Bulls lived up to the billing and then some.
After falling behind following an Ezequiel Barco goal and having a Josef Martinez tally called back on Video Review, Danny Royer leveled for the Red Bulls (7-3-0) from the penalty spot in the 42nd minute. Bradley Wright-Phillips, who drew the PK, then struck for a brace four minutes apart in the second half in a wild, emotional affair that also saw Kemar Lawrence leave the field on a stretcher after what appeared to be a scary head injury and Tyler Adams leave with swelling in his right knee.
But Marsch said both players are good to go and both are possible inclusions for a Red Bulls team riding a four-match winning streak into Saturday night.
“Kemar’s good,” Marsch said after training Wednesday. “He’s done a ton of testing, which is one of the reasons they gave him off [today] because they treated him like a lab rat for two days just to make sure everything is ok, but everything is great. He’ll be in training full tomorrow and he should be ready for the weekend.”

Philadelphia Union

For the first time this season, the Union (4-5-2) have strung together consecutive wins, following a 2-0 win over the Montreal Impact with a 4-1 hammering of RSL Saturday night at Talen Energy Stadium.
Marcus Epps and Borek Dockal gave Philadelphia a 2-0 lead and Ilsinho and Keegan Rosenberrystruck in the final 16 minutes to close out an impressive victory.
“I thought a very strong performance from the group,” Jim Curtin said after the match. “We talked a lot about if we did not back up a good performance in Montreal with another one it would be meaningless. Credit to the players. They deserve all the credit. I thought the energy that was put in made Salt Lake uncomfortable.”

After three consecutive 2-2 draws, Vancouver Whitecaps FC look to get back in the win column Saturday afternoon, but it won’t be easy because the New England Revolution will come to BC Place attempting to bounce back from a 1-0 home loss to Columbus Crew SC.
Vancouver have only beaten New England twice in eight regular season games (4L-2D) and haven’t beaten the Revolution since the 2015 season, per Opta.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Carl Robinson made five changes to a side that drew the San Jose Earthquakes2-2, last Wednesday, bringing Brett Levis and Jakob Nerwinski back in at outside backs and Brek Sheaand Bernie Ibini-Isei wide in the midfield in his preferred 4-4-2.
After falling behind 2-0 with 12 minutes left, Vancouver (4-5-4) rallied to score twice in the final eight minutes to forge a 2-2 draw with FC Dallas as Kei Kamara scored from the penalty spot in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time following a Maynor Figueroa own goal.
“I think Brad’s come in and implemented his own philosophy and style,” Robinson said of Revs coach Brad Friedel. “They’re a high pressing team, they’re very aggressive, very physical, we know that. They’ve got a lot of personnel from last year that we know, but they’re a good team.”

New England Revolution

Friedel made two changes to a side that defeated Toronto FC3-2, the previous week, with Brandon Bye playing wide right in a five-man midfield and Cristian Penilla partnering with Teal Bunbury up top in a new-look 3-5-2 formation as the Revs (5-4-2) were without Diego Fagundez, suspended due to yellow card accumulation.
In a game with little separating the two teams, Lalas Abubakar provided the difference five minutes from full time with a headed goal following a Federico Higuain corner kick.
“I think what we’ve been doing all season long is following a difficult result, sticking together as a team and going out there and outworking the opponent,” Bunbury said at training this week. “I think those are going to be big keys for us. We know Vancouver’s a good team. We know we’re playing on the road, but we have a talented group of guys. As long as we stick together, we’re going to be able to get three points.

With a week off to reflect and get healthy, Schmetzer is focused on important games against RSL.

Real Salt Lake (4-6-1) fell in a 2-0 hole after 34 minutes and pulled within a goal when Damir Kreilach struck for his second goal of the season in the 65th minute, but Ilsinho and Keegan Rosenberry scored for the Union seven minutes apart late in the game to sink RSL.
“Right now this is who we are,” Petke said after the game. “On the road, we don’t lose small. We lose big. We win big at home, [3-2] last week, a couple of grind outs at home. This is who we are right now.”
