Sevilla slip again after draw against Bilbao

Sevilla gave Barcelona and Real Madrid the chance to pull further clear in La Liga's title race after they began the year by drawing 1-1 at home to Athletic Bilbao on Friday.
Bilbao took an early lead through Ander Capa at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and while an own-goal from Unai Nunez brought Sevilla level on the hour, the home side were unable to find a winner.
It means Sevilla trail Real Madrid, who they play at the Santiago Bernabeu on January 18, by two points and Barcelona by four.
Those gaps will grow on Saturday if Madrid win away at Getafe and Barcelona overcome local rivals Espanyol.
With Atletico Madrid struggling for goals and Valencia still recovering after removing their coach, Sevilla have looked like the team most likely to challenge Spain's established duo.
But after an encouraging run of form in October and November, Julen Lopetegui's side have managed only one win from their last four league matches.
Qualification for the Champions League may soon be the best they can hope for, which would be no mean feat after they signed 13 players and sold 15 last summer, as well as hiring a new coach.
Athletic Bilbao are in the hunt too. They sit seventh, three points behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid, who play at home to Levante on Saturday.
Gaizka Garitano's side took the lead in the 15th minute after an excellent control and finish from Capa, with Kenan Kodro finding the net again shortly after only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Sevilla turned the screw in the second half.
Jesus Navas, making his 500th appearance for Sevilla, almost set up an equaliser only for Luuk de Jong's finish from six yards to come back off the post.
The home did level with half an hour left. Lucas Ocampos drove to the line and his cross was turned in by Nunez at the near post.

Klopp calls for end to England's fixture mayhem

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Friday stepped up his calls to protect players from burn-out after claiming England's festive fixture pile-up was bad for the sport.
Klopp is one of a growing number of Premier League managers frustrated by the demands placed on top-flight teams by England's domestic competitions and television's unquenchable thirst to show the games.
Liverpool are down to 12 fit senior outfield players after a host of injuries in recent weeks, while Tottenham star Harry Kane suffered a torn hamstring on New Year's Day and Newcastle lost four players in one match.
Klopp believes coaches and football people should be included in the discussion with the sport's governing bodies and television companies to ensure a proper solution can be found.
"I told what I had to say to UEFA personally, I told FIFA sometimes in interviews because I don't know anyone there and I don't think the Premier League, FA (Football Association) or Football League are in any doubt of my opinion," Klopp told reporters on Friday.
"I just do that not because of me but because I think someone has to speak for the players.
"If you have a good friend and you see him twice a year, brilliant. Best time of your life. If you see him every day you think after five days 'What the heck?'.
"But what we do is throw football at the people. How many games were on Boxing Day? There were maybe some men, probably, who watched all of them live.
"I don't think that's good for their relationship. It's not good for mine and I already watch a lot of football."
Klopp wants all parties to get together and come up with a sustainable plan and he has volunteered to attend.
"The solution is to bring all these people together and try to think one time in all these negotiations about the players," he added.
"Other people are sitting there and they are not football people. We need to talk with football people, I think there is a solution possible.
"We love this game but in the end we have to make sure that we can all come through and in the end the best team wins and not the most lucky with injuries. If you need me in the discussion I am pretty much there."

Alineaciones probables

Getafe: Soria; Nyom, Cabrera, Djené, Damián; Cucurella, Maksimovic, Arambarri, Portillo, Ángel y Jaime Mata
Real Madrid: Courtois, Mendy, Militao, Varane, Carvajal; Casemiro, Valverde, Kroos, Isco; Rodrygo y Benzema

Valencia vs Eibar Prediction & Match Preview

Valencia vs Eibar
Spain – LaLiga
Date: Saturday, 4 January 2019
Kick-off at 12:00 UK/ 13:00 CET
Venue: Estadio de Mestalla.
Valencia have slowly started to turn their season around, and they will pin a great deal of hope on the home advantage this weekend. Not only have they been performing well in front of the home crowd lately, but the visitors Eibar have not had a good season on the road this campaign as well.

Valencia vs Eibar Head-to-head (h2h)

  • The last time these two met, Eibar won on the road 0-1.
  • Five of the former seven matches failed to have goals from both teams.
  • Eibar failed to score a single goal in two of their previous four visits to this venue.
  • Valencia scored thrice or more in two of their last five appearances here.

Valencia vs Eibar Prediction

Valencia will surely be over the moon after they salvaged a point the last match-day on the road, in the 94th minute. They were being hosted by Valladolid, and were trailing 1-0 even into the injury time, when Manu Vallejo turned savior for the team.
Meanwhile, Eibar recorded a 3-0 victory at home the previous game week, over the newly promoted Granada.
As things stand, Eibar are on the back foot right away. Their performance on the road have been shambolic at best this season. In fact, they have a single win on the road this league campaign, and it had come against the 19th placed Leganes.
Going on, in total, Eibar have managed to secure just two wins from all their competitions so far in away fixtures this season, and the victory other than the one against Leganes was against SD Logrones, in the Copa del Rey. Keep note that the opponent were a lower tier team.
On the other hand, Valencia have lost just once in their last eleven match-days, and just thrice in their previous twenty games. At home, impressively they have lost just once in total this whole season, and it had come against Ajax in the Champions League.
Most importantly, take note that Valencia’s last three home games in a row were against Real Madrid, Villarreal, and Chelsea. Not only did they remain unbeaten in all these games, but scored twice or more in two of those as well.
Considering these observations, it’s rightfully adjudged that Valencia are the favorites to post the three points this Saturday.
However, consider the h2h superiority that Eibar have shown over the course of the last few years. They have recorded the last four h2h wins in a row, and have been unbeaten against this opponent in the past three years as well.
Eibar have also kept clean sheets in four of the prior seven h2h fixtures, and in the last three meetings at this venue. Furthermore, Eibar won two of the prior three h2h games at this ground, and have not lost against this rival since 2016.
Taking into account these notes, it’s deduced that while Valencia may have the upper hand, they might not be able to deliver a huge win. Eibar have been on a roll against this foe for quite some while, and they will ensure that if even if they lose, they will not do so by a heavy margin.
Likely, it’s building up to be a low goal-scoring affair.

Valencia vs Eibar Betting Tips

  • To Win: Valencia @ 1.70 (7/10)
  • Under 3.5 Match Goals @ 1.40 (2/5).

Espanyol vs Barcelona Prediction & Match Preview

Espanyol vs Barcelona
Spain – LaLiga
Date: Saturday, 4 January 2019
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: RCDE Stadium.
The current toppers, and defending champions Barcelona take on the dead-last placed Espanyol this Saturday in the La Liga. By all means, we are in line for a monstrous performance from Barca at the RCDE Stadium.

Espanyol vs Barcelona Head-to-head (h2h)

  • 29 of the previous 34 wins had gone to Barcelona.
  • The last time these two met, Barca won 2-0.
  • Espanyol have managed to score a total of just two goals from the previous eight match-ups.
  • 12 of the last 14 wins at this venue had gone to the guests.

Espanyol vs Barcelona Match Preview

Barca will want to begin their 2020 on the right note. They have had faced some serious challenges in the previous seasons, and many a times, they let go of all of their hard work with some careless and uninspired gameplay.
The team simply does have no option this time around to mess up. Fans expect glory at the end of the season, and for that they need to build some momentum right now.
A huge win in the first game of the year could do them a world of good.

Espanyol vs Barcelona Prediction

Espanyol had taken on the currently 19th placed Leganes the last match-day, and the former succumbed to a 2-0 loss on the road.
Meanwhile, Barcelona made light work of Alaves, as they cruised to a 4-1 victory at the Nou Camp.
At first sight itself, a favorite emerges to post the three points on the board. Barcelona are placed at the top of the table, while their opposite number are the 20th team in a league of 20 squads.
In addition, Espanyol have won the least number of games this season in the league, have scored the least, and have conceded the most number of goals.
Importantly, they hold a 100% winless record in front of the home crowd this campaign, and have let in a total of 20 goals in away matches. Keep note that the next worst is just 15.
On the other hand, the toppers Barcelona have scored the most number of goals at 47, while not even a single squad have yet touched the 35-goal mark. Yes, this stat includes the mighty Real Madrid too.
Moving on, Barca have shown clear dominance over the years in h2h clashes. They recorded 29 of the last 34 h2h wins, and have conceded a total of just two goals from the past eight meetings against this opponent.
Furthermore, at this venue, Barca registered 12 of the last 14 wins, and conceded a total of just two goals from their past nine visits.
Taking into account these overwhelming observations, it’s rightfully adjudged that Barcelona are expected to record a crushing win this Saturday over Espanyol.

Espanyol vs Barcelona Betting Tips

  • Barcelona to Win @ 1.50 (1/2)
  • Half Time/ Full Time: Barcelona/ Barcelona @ 2.20 (6/5).

Getafe vs Real Madrid Prediction & Match Preview

Getafe vs Real Madrid
Spain – LaLiga
Date: Saturday, 4 January 2019
Kick-off at 15:00 UK/ 16:00 CET
Venue: Coliseum Alfonso Perez.
Real Madrid have drawn their last three league games in a row, and they need this win at any cost. However, it will be easier said than done considering the form of Getafe, and their home advantage on top of that. Get ready for a fierce encounter this weekend at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Getafe vs Real Madrid Head-to-head (h2h)

  • Madrid won ten of the last eleven overall match-ups.
  • Getafe also conceded two or more goals in all ten of these fixtures.
  • In the last ten years, Getafe have won just once at this venue.
  • Still, the Madrid outfit have kept just five clean sheets at this stadium in their previous fourteen visits.

Getafe vs Real Madrid Match Preview

Despite their dominance in Europe, the failure of the Royal Whites in the La Liga have always been a thorn in their eyes. Barcelona have delivered eight league titles in the last eleven years, and Real had to contend with just two.
They just cannot extend this streak any longer.
This season seems to be the best opportunity for Zinedine Zidane’s men to go after the domestic crowns considering the struggles Barca are going through right now.
At this halfway point of the season, Real are trailing by just points behind the Blaugrana, and a satisfactory performance in the second phase of the league campaign should fetch the Los Blancos their elusive title.

Getafe vs Real Madrid Prediction

Getafe were on the road the last match-day, and were defeated 1-0 by Villarreal. The red card given to the guests early in the second half might have played a big role in the loss though.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid were once again held to a draw in the league, as they played hosts to Athletic Bilbao. A win was necessary for Zidane’s men after their stalemate at the Camp Nou, but unfortunately, their barren run extended another match-day.
This weekend, the three consecutive draws by Real Madrid will play a significant role in determining the outcome of the match. Despite playing a better game than that of Barca, Zidane’s men are placed below them in the table, and this will definitely drive them to toil hard for a win somehow.
Moreover, in terms of sheer talent, experience, and stature, Real are dimensions above Getafe, and it really is not that much of a challenge for the 13-time champions to go after the three points if they are in the mood.
They are also placed second in the table, and have lost just a single game so far in their league campaign. Furthermore, the team is unbeaten in their last thirteen straight fixtures, and in their past six fixtures on the road.
Most importantly, Los Blancos had won ten of the preceding eleven h2h clashes, and recorded 17 of the prior 18 such wins. At this venue, they won four of their last five visits, and seven of their last nine as well.
Considering these observations, Real Madrid are tipped to record a win this Saturday in the La Liga.
However, understand that Getafe had been one of the best teams in the competition the last season. They have also maintained that kind of form this time around too.
In fact, Getafe had won six of their previous seven overall match-ups, and were unbeaten in 17 of their prior 19 appearances at home.
Moreover, at home, they have secured a combined scoreline of 9-0 from their previous three games, and the only two losses they suffered here at this stadium this season had come against Barcelona, and the other in the Europa League.
Taking into account these additional information, it’s adjudged that, with the aid of the home advantage, Getafe should find the back of the net at least first. Thus the BTTS option seems very promising this weekend.

Getafe vs Real Madrid Betting Tips

  • Real Madrid to Win @ 1.80 (4/5)
  • Both Teams to Score @ 1.80 (4/5).

Atletico Madrid vs Levante Prediction & Match Preview

Atletico Madrid vs Levante
Spain – LaLiga
Date: Saturday, 4 January 2019
Kick-off at 17:30 UK/ 18:30 CET
Venue: Wanda Metropolitano (Madrid).
Atletico are trying their best to turn around their season. Currently they are on a two-game winning run in the league, and will hope to extend it to three, with the aid of the home advantage. It certainly does help that Levante have had some struggles on the road.

Atletico Madrid vs Levante Head-to-head (h2h)

  • 14 of the previous 17 wins went to Atletico Madrid.
  • Levante failed to score in three of the preceding four match-ups.
  • 13 of the past 14 overall wins had gone to the teams with home advantage.
  • Atleti are on a ten-match winning run at home.

Atletico Madrid vs Levante Match Preview

Diego Simeone have had to bid goodbye to some of his star players the last season. He did get some worthy replacements, but those guys are yet to fill in the shoes of their predecessors.
As a result, Atleti have failed to show the kind of dominance they are usually associated with, in the Spanish top flight.
As of now, it seems like Simeone’s men are slowly on the rise, and they will try their best to keep the momentum going.

Atletico Madrid vs Levante Prediction

Atleti were on the Road the last match-day, and had to take on Real Betis. Despite the challenge though, the team managed to record a 1-2 win to post some valuable points on the board.
Meanwhile, Levante cruised to a comeback win in front of their home crowd, the previous game week. They had locked horns with Celta Vigo, and the scorecard had read 3-1 at the end of the ninety minutes.
This weekend, several factors work together to pick out Atletico Madrid as the favorite.
First of all, consider the stature of Atleti in Spanish Football, as well as World Football. They are usual suspects for the league title along with Real Madrid and Barcelona, and are a constant presence in the knockouts of the Champions League.
Moreover, they are also placed in a Champions-League spot in the table as of now, whereas their opposite number are not even in the vicinity of the European zone.
On top of that, Atleti have the home advantage as well, and most importantly, they are in search for some urgent points, so as to make up for their terrible performances earlier in the season.
Going on, Simeone’s presence in the dugouts too will be a major factor in support for an Atleti win, and furthermore, they have dominated the h2h clashes for a very long time.
To quote a stat, Atleti delivered 14 of the previous 17 overall h2h wins, and kept clean sheets in three of the last four such meetings. Importantly, at home, Atleti are on a ten-game winning run against this opponent, and they kept clean sheets in six of the past ten such encounters.
In addition, Atleti are on a three-game winning run in all competitions this season, and kept clean sheets in their past four. At home, they have lost just once in the previous 20 attempts, and this is a streak that extend back to February of this year.
In fact, this sole loss had come against Barcelona, and that too for a single goal scored by Lionel Messi in the closing stages of the game.
Atleti have also won five of their preceding six appearances here, and scored two or more goals in four of their last six. Additionally, they had also kept clean sheets in six of their past nine match-ups at this stadium.
On the other hand, Levante are on the road, and they have a total of just three league wins away from home this season. One of those had come against the newly-promoted Granada, and one against the 19th placed Leganes.
Considering all these stats, it’s strongly recommended that the punters back a huge win for Atletico Madrid this Saturday. Moreover, taking into account their stupendous defense, which has once again conceded the least number of goals in the La Liga, it’s expected that the guests will fail to find the back of the net this match-day.

Atletico Madrid vs Levante Betting Tips

  • To Win to Nil: Atletico Madrid @ 2.00 (1/1)
  • Atletico Madrid to Score in First Half @ 1.50 (1/2).

The Warm Down: New year, same Liverpool

Liverpool secured their first win of the year after beating Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield on Thursday night.

Liverpool's unbeaten Premier League season remains firmly in tact after a crucial win over Sheffield United at Anfield on Thursday night, overcoming their opponents 2-0.
Mohamed Salah opened the scoring on four minutes after Andy Robertson capitalised on a defensive error and broke down the left hand side.
The full-back squared it to the Egyptian in the box, who tapped it in from close range.
The Reds extended their lead deep into the second half after a good build up from Salah and Sadio Mane.
Dean Henderson made an initial save, but Mane was there to slam the rebound into the back of the net.

Injuries mounting for Liverpool

On what was otherwise a positive night for Jurgen Klopp's side, another name on the injury list is something that will concern the Reds' boss.
Midfielder Naby Keita was named in the starting eleven but was replaced by James Milner after picking up an injury in the warm-up.
A suspected groin injury will rule him out of Sunday's FA Cup fixture against Everton, but Liverpool are waiting to learn the severity of the problem.
Keita joins a long list of sidelined players, including Dejan LovrenJoel MatipFabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The extent of Liverpool's injury concerns was highlighted by the fact four academy graduates were named on the bench against Sheffield United - Harvey Elliott made his league debut for the Reds as a late substitute.
Much has been made of Manchester City's growing injury list this season, but the league leaders have had their fair share of setbacks this term.

The Gomez-Van Dijk partnership

At the back end of the 18/19 season and beginning of this season, Virgil Van Dijk's centre-half partnership with Matip was described as one of the best in the league.
Injuries have meant Joe Gomez returned to the fold in recent weeks and a consistent run of games has only been a positive thing for the 22-year-old.
That's now seven clean sheets in seven for Liverpool when the two have played alongside each other.
Prior to that, the Reds hadn't kept a clean sheet in 13 games in all competitions - a run that was becoming a growing concern among supporters.
Now though, the pair have returned to the form shown last season and other than rotation or injury, both Matip and Lovren will be presented with the tough challenge of reclaiming their starting spot.

Jordan Henderson appreciation

Klopp said it perfectly himself in his post-match press conference: "If anyone cannot see the quality of Jordan Henderson by now, I cannot help them."
The midfielder was deservedly named man of the match for his performance against the Blades after creating numerous chances and proving to be a key reason for the Reds' victory.
He hasn't always been appreciated by Liverpool supporters, with many questioning whether he's good enough for this side.
It's clear that argument can be firmly put to bed as he's done more than enough over the last season and a half to show exactly why he's perfect for the club - a true leader and captain.

Wilder's honest assessment

Chris Wilder was very clear in his post-match analysis, Liverpool simply out-played them in all departments.
"They won every first ball, every second ball, ran forward and ran back," the Sheffield United boss said to BT Sport.
No bitterness, just admiration for the job Klopp is doing and the immense side he's put together.
His team were defensively solid across the 90 minutes, undone only by lapses of concentration and a clinical edge from the hosts.
But, they posed little threat to the Reds' backline and Liverpool emerged the worthy winners.
