Kimmich will ungeliebte Rolle annehmen

Etappenziel erreicht - Chance verpasst

Arabian Gulf League: Champions Sharjah braced for the new season

Dubai: Sharjah FC will use a four-team friendly competition before launching their title defence of the Arabian Gulf League (AGL) starting in the first half of September.

Other teams in fray are fellow AGL teams like Ittihad Kalba, Ajman Club and Khor Fakkan for the friendly competition between August 18-27.

Sharjah have already begun their preparations for the new season after the UAE Football Association (UAE FA) had scrapped all football activity for the remainder of the season following the suspension of the AGL earlier due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Winning their sixth league title had been a major achievement for the young team under 42-year-old former midfielder and now coach Abdul Aziz Al Anbari last season. However, after cancelling all football activity, the UAE FA ordered that Sharjah would continue as champions for another year in order to fulfill recommendations laid down by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

The absence of influential playmaker and goalscorer Igor Coronado had been a huge impediment to Sharjah as they sought a defence of their league title. Known as ‘The King’ among the local football faithful, Sharjah was in fifth place with 35 points – a full eight points away from leaders Shabab Al Ahli Dubai – when the AGL was cancelled off earlier this month.
Since then, Coronado has returned to full fitness and the club management has roped in some exciting overseas and local talent with fresh signings. One of the vital additions to Al Anbari’s line-up is Abdoulaye Traore, the left winger who has joined from Serie A side Hellas Verona along with the return of Cape Verde and Portugal centre forward Ricadro Gomes following the completion of his loan move at Ittihad Kalba.

Brazilian Caio Lucas Fernandes, a one-time right midfielder or second striker at Al Ain, still has a contract with Sharjah FC till June next year, while midfielder Otabek Shukurov also joined the team training following his arrival from Uzbekistan last week.
“The pre-season has started for us in right earnest and we are hoping to have the entire squad fit and ready to go in time for the new season. Things have been unusual this year with the pandemic interrupting the last season, but we have to put things behind us and look confidently forward while believing we can be the best team,” a club official told Gulf News.
“At our level, we have done all we can to assemble the right sort of players as requested by the coach. Now it is left up to them all to work hard towards achieving success. We are confident we can be genuine challengers to the league next season as well,” he contended.
The new season will commence with the Arabian Gulf Cup on September 3, while the AGL will get under way from September 9. In the Arabian Gulf Cup, Sharjah has received a straight bye into the quarter finals where they will meet the winners of the group match played between Al Wasl and Al Wahda. They will commence their league campaign with their opener against Fujairah.
The defending AGL champions will have to immediately refocus on the Asian stage as they will have to leave for Qatar to participate in the AFC Champions League matches starting in Doha from September 14. Sharjah FC compete in Group C of the AFC Champions League alongside Al Duhail (Qatar), Al Taawon (Saudi Arabia) and Persepolis (Iran).

Portland Timbers 1 (4), FC Cincinnati 1 (2) | MLS is Back Tournament Match Recap

Steve Clark saved Jurgen Locadia's second penalty of the night, Kendall Waston skied his spot kick over the bar and the Portland Timbers survived wild trouble of their own making, advancing past FC Cincinnati on penalties after a 1-1 draw in to reach the MLS is Back Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday night.
Clark's save made amends for his earlier blunder late in the second half, a giveaway that resulted in FC Cincy's game-tying penalty.
Locadia had entered in the 72nd minute, and he converted that one before having his second saved in the third round of the tiebreak. In his first match action since early March because of a quad strain picked up during tournament preparations, Locadia also missed a wide-open chance in the dying moments of regulation that could've put the Orange and Blue in front.
Jaroslaw Niezgoda's penalty sealed the victory for Portland, after his second goal in as many matches put the Timbers ahead in the 67th minute.

Full PK shootout

On Portland's goal, Diego Valeri spotted Sebastian Blanco down the left and Blanco then picked out Niezgoda in the six-yard box. Niezgoda controlled with his first touch and poked in a neat finish with this second.
Cincinnati were level 14 minutes later after Clark's calamity. Perhaps unsure if he would be whistled for handling a backpass, Clark tried to play the ball around Allan Cruz with his feet. Instead, Cruz dispossessed him and was promptly taken down, leaving Armando Villarreal to point to the spot. Locadia stepped up, driving a firm finish between Clark's dive and the left post.

Man of the Match presented by Heineken

Przemyslaw Tyton. The FC Cincy goalkeeper was the less memorable of the two men in net, and that's a good thing. He made seven stops and looked in complete control for all of them. There was very little he could be expected to do on the goal scored by his Polish compatriot that gave the Timbers the lead. He was a big reason the match even got to penalties.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: Although FC Cincy may feel disappointment now, they return home in an infinitely better position as a club than when they arrived in Florida, with both a basic sense of their identity for now and presumably a much greater degree of confidence in their ability to live up to it.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Columbus Crew SC fans who kept the TV on following their team's defeat may be doomed to have nightmares after Clark's error gifted FC Cincy a lifeline. The moment was reminiscent of a similar one when Clark was in goal for the Crewin their 2015 MLS Cup defeat at home to Portland.
  • YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED: Deplagne appeared to give FC Cincy a shock lead with his header in the 61st minute. However, Villarreal quickly overturned the goal for offside following a Video Review. And the ESPN telecast let viewers in on his conversation with VAR Rosendo Mendoza.

Columbus Crew SC 1 (3), Minnesota United 1 (5) | MLS is Back Tournament Match Recap

Tyler Miller saved Chris Cadden on the third round of penalties, and Minnesota United made all five of theirs in a penalty-kick shootout to advance to the MLS is Back quarterfinals following a cagey 1-1 draw against Columbus Crew SC on Tuesday night.
Chase Gasper converted the clinching penalty for Minnesota. Osvaldo AlonsoJan GregusAaron Schoenfeld and Raheem Edwards also converted their spot kicks for the Loons, who were deserving of passage to the next round after playing most of the match on their terms.

Full PK shootout

In regulation, Lod scored to give his team the early lead and beat a Columbus goalkeeper for the first time all tournament. Zardes answered late with his fourth goal of the tournament on a rebound of his own penalty.
But having nearly denied Zardes, Miller dove correctly to his right to deny Cadden on Columbus' third kick, this time no second attempts permitted.

Man of the Match presented by Heineken

Tyler Miller. The goalkeeper was unfortunate not to have emerged as the hero in regulation, but he took his second chance.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: This was one of those matches where the stats failed to tell the story. Columbus led substantially in shots, shots on target, possession and pass completion percentage. Yet it was Minnesota mostly dictating the terms of play, and who had the better quality opportunities.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Minnesota looked comfortable and capable of seeing out the final 15 minutes until Aja's reckless challenge in a part of the penalty area where it also appeared unnecessary.
  • YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED: Porter took Zardes out of the game, replacing him with Fanendo Adi late in the match, despite Zardes being the team's designated PK taker. Could this have been a result of his initial miss against Miller?

Brighton sign Ajax defender Veltman

Brighton signed Netherlands defender Joel Veltman from Ajax for an undisclosed fee on Wednesday.
Veltman agreed a three-year contract with the Premier League side.
The 28-year-old helped Ajax win the Dutch title three times after coming through the club's vaunted academy.
"We're delighted to welcome Joel to the club," Brighton boss Graham Potter said.
"He has terrific experience from his time with Ajax including the Champions League and, of course, with the Dutch national team.
"He's an excellent defender who can play at right-back and at centre-half, but he's also comfortable in possession.
"He is really looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Premier League and we're delighted he is now a Brighton player and we're looking forward to working with him."
Capped 22 times by Holland, Veltman was part of the 2014 World Cup squad and also played in Ajax's Europa League final defeat to Manchester United in 2017.
He becomes the second arrival at the AMEX Stadium this week after England midfielder Adam Lallana joined the Seagulls following his departure from Liverpool.

Brentford beat Swansea to reach Championship play-off final

Thomas Frank insisted Brentford proved they are not chokers by booking their place in the Championship play-off final with an impressive 3-1 win against Swansea on Wednesday.
Frank's side trailed 1-0 after Sunday's semi-final first leg, but they hit back to mark the last match at their Griffin Park stadium with a 3-2 aggregate success.
Ollie Watkins cancelled out Swansea's advantage in the opening minutes and Emiliano Marcondes doubled stylish Brentford's lead before the break.
Bryan Mbeumo bagged their third goal after half-time and Rhian Brewster's strike was too late to spark a Swansea revival.
Brentford will face local rivals Fulham or Cardiff in the play-off final at Wembley on August 4.
Fulham hold a 2-0 first leg lead heading into Thursday's decisive meeting at Craven Cottage.
Successive defeats against lowly Stoke and Barnsley at the end of the regular season ruined third placed Brentford's hopes of automatic promotion to the Premier League.
But the unfashionable west London club, forever in the shadow of neighbours Chelsea, remain in the hunt to reach England's top-flight for the first time in 73 years.
And Frank was adamant he always believed his team could cope with the play-off pressure.
"Because we had these two minor setbacks everyone was talking about 'can they handle it', but you know we put too many things on a specific game," Frank said.
"We were just on it. The way we played tonight, I honestly think we could have won three or four nil.
"I said after training yesterday that we wouldn't leave this pitch until we're in the final.
"I felt we were the better team and thought we had that irritated feeling in our bodies."
Brentford owner Matthew Benham has introduced an analytical-based approach off the field, overseen by two co-directors of football, to make the most of their meagre resources in comparison to the Championship's wealthier clubs.
It has proved a successful formula and Brentford are now just one win away from a lucrative £170 million place alongside Chelsea, Liverpool and company in the Premier League.
That would be the perfect way to say farewell to Griffin Park, the club's home since 1904, as Brentford prepare to move into a new stadium next season.
Although the ground was empty due to the coronavirus, Danish boss Frank had called on his players to deliver "one last magical moment" at the old place and Watkins rose to the occasion in the 11th minute.
Breaking quickly from a Swansea corner, Brentford cut through the visitors' defence as Watkins ran onto Mathias Jensen's precise through-ball and slotted a clinical finish under Erwin Mulder.
Brentford had been too conservative in the first leg, but they were surging forward with poise and purpose this time and doubled their lead in the 15th minute.
Said Benrahma lofted his cross into the penalty area and, with Swansea's defence slow to react, Marcondes had time and space to guide his header past Mulder.
Brentford hadn't won a single play-off match in 11 previous attempts dating back to 2002.
But Frank's team made it three less than a minute after the interval.
Brentford's Rico Henry had been sent off in the first leg, but he was available to play after the red card was quashed on appeal.
Making the most of his reprieve, Henry tore down the left wing and whipped over a cross that Mbeumo met with a superb volleyed finish.
Brewster, on loan from Liverpool, pounced on a mistake from Pontus Jansson to lob Swansea's goal in the 78th minute, but Brentford held on.

Immobile closes in on Serie A record as Lazio target second spot

Ciro Immobile moved to within one goal of equalling the Serie A single season scoring record on Wednesday as Lazio beat relegated Brescia 2-0 to stay in the race for second place.
Immobile struck his 35th league goal of the campaign eight minutes from time in Rome to close in on Gonzalo Higuain's record of 36 goals, scored for Napoli in 2015-16.
Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo is four goals behind Immobile as the champions take on Cagliari later Wednesday.
"There is Ronaldo, so it would be a great achievement for Ciro Immobile, a prize and source of pride for everyone," said coach Simone Inzaghi.
With one game to play Lazio are fourth, equal on 78 points with third-placed Atalanta, who beat Parma 2-1 on Tuesday, and one adrift Inter Milan who are second following their 2-0 win over Napoli.
All three teams are targeting second place behind Juve, who sealed a ninth consecutive Serie A title at the weekend.
Inter and Atalanta will go head-to-head this weekend with Lazio's last game at seventh-placed Napoli.
Immobile helped Joaquin Correa open the scoring after 16 minutes at the Stadio Olimpico, with Correa returning the favour late on.
Behind the top four, who are assured of Champions League football next season, AC Milan kept the pressure on fifth-placed Roma for the Europa League group stage berth.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice and set up a third as Milan beat Sampdoria 4-1, leaving Stefano Pioli's side one point behind Roma, who play Torino later on Wednesday.
The 38-year-old Swede got his head to an Ante Rebic cross within four minutes in Genoa for his fastest goal in the Italian top flight.
Ibrahimovic then nodded the ball across for Hakan Calhanoglu to add the second six minutes after the break.
Turkish winger Calhanoglu provided the cross which allowed Ibrahimovic to add his second of the night.
Leao added a fourth in injury time as Milan extended their unbeaten run to 11 games.
Ibrahimovic has scored nine league goals since rejoining Milan in January.
The veteran brings his club tally to 51 goals for the club, combined with his previous stint between 2010 and 2012.
He also becomes the first player to have scored 50 goals for both Milan clubs, with 57 netted during his time at city rivals Inter from 2006 to 2009.
"Like Benjamin Button, I've always been young, never old," said Ibrahimovic of the film of a man who ages in reverse.
"They tell me I'm old and tired but I'm just warming up."
Lecce's bid for survival will go down to the final day after they came from behind to beat Udinese 2-1.
The southern club occupy the final relegation position but are now just one point behind 17th-placed Genoa, who were hammered 5-0 at Sassuolo.
Both Lecce and Genoa will face Parma and Hellas Verona respectively at the weekend to avoid joining Brescia and SPAL in Serie B next season.

Xavi says recovered from coronavirus

Former Barcelona star Xavi Hernandez said on Wednesday that he had recovered from the coronavirus, returned home and resumed his duties as Qatari side Al-Sadd's head coach.
"Thank you so much for all the caring messages that I've received during these days," he wrote on his verified Instagram page alongside an image of him holding his daughter.
"I want to share with you that I'm recovered and back home with my family and the Al-Sadd team."
Xavi, 40, announced on Saturday that he had tested positive following routine screening of players and staff in Qatar's top-flight.
Exactly 4 percent of Qatar's 2.75 million people have had coronavirus, with 110,153 cases reported since the start of the pandemic giving the tiny Gulf state one of the highest per capita total infection rates.
However the gas-rich country has reported just 169 deaths meaning it has one of the world's lowest virus death rates and 106,849 people have recovered from COVID-19, according to official statistics.
Xavi missed Al-Sadd's 2-1 victory over Al-Khor, their first fixture since the resumption of the league which was suspended in March to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Talking Tactics: Lampard vs Arteta

In these uncertain of times, one thing remains a constant: Chelsea and Arsenal in an FA Cup final. 21 one trophy lifts between them, and a further 12 runners up-medals to boot, London has certainly loomed large over the countries most treasured domestic prize.
Saturday will pit the pair against another at Wembley for the third time since the start of the millennium, led by two managers who have their own loving relationship with the coveted cup.
Frank Lampard - winner on four occasions. Mikel Arteta - successive victories in 2014 and 2015. Now the pair pit their minds against one another from the sidelines in opposing dugouts, putting to practise the philosophies they have discovered during their short shelf live in the hot seat.

Three at the back, no looking back

It seems befitting that the finale of such historic heritage is to be headed by a pair of ex-pros who only hung up their boots four years ago.
Lampard dove straight in at Derby County, driving them to the national stadium in the play-off final, before completing a seemingly inevitably cycle by taking the Chelsea job last summer as the Blues bid farewell to Maurizio Sarri.
Arteta arguably had the greatest teacher to ever grace the game, acting assistant coach to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, just three months after announcing his retirement at Arsenal. He too came full circle, leaving the City nest to take over the Gunners last December as he aimed to steady the barrel left smoking by Unai Emery.
The similarities in their respective trajectories can also be found in their formation preferences. Lampard has largely used a 4-3-3, whilst Arteta has trialed a 4-2-3-1, both receiving varying degrees of success.

Yet, their finest achievements have been owed to a 3-4-3 shape. Chelsea completely controlled the semi-final against Manchester United and Lampard managed to score one over his former mentor, Jose Mourinho, defeating Tottenham Hotspurs 2-1 in the Premier League.
Arteta also acted in the role of disciple becoming the master, engineering an impressive victory of City and Guardiola in the other penultimate fixture before the final. Wins over Liverpool and Wolves were achieved in an equally efficient fashion because of the 3-4-3 on display.
Neither backline has particularly struck fear into opposing strikers this season, however, with a three instead of a four in front of the goalkeeper, they have become less brittle and harder to breakthrough. Center-backs now have the benefit of extra cover, whereas the wingbacks can focus more on going forward, aware that another defender is behind them to cover the space if necessary.
This has especially benefitted David Luiz, who appears far more comfortable with two either side of him and with less defensive responsibility. This will come as no surprise to Blues fans, having watched the Brazilian shine as a back-three during triumphant league campaign under Antonio Conte.
Cesar Azpilicueta was also apart of that trio that dominated Chelsea's title pursuit, Lampard utilising his prior experience on the right side of the three as he can martial not only those beside of him, but those in front of him as well.
One of these being Reece James, the young defender now stationed as a wing-back, licensed by Lampard to roam down the right and deliver dangerous crosses into the area. On the opposite side is Marcos Alonso, his Chelsa career momentarily revitalized thanks to this shift in formation, a position he knows inside out thanks to his role in the Conte crusade.
Like Alonso, Arteta has rediscovered the best in Kieran Tierney, not through loss of form but through lack of game time. Had the Scotsman been fit throughout his maiden spell in England, Arsenal's tender spot in the table may have been anointed. His delivery is on par, if not slightly superior, to that of James', and has the versatility of Azpilicueta in that he can drop in at left-back or even centre-back if required.

High press vs risky possession

Within these tested formulas are the tactics that typify the thinking of Lampard and Arteta. Chelsea are all about a high press, hounding defenders with great energy and speed, whereas Arsenal have started to rediscover the passing game that made them so attractive as a product of Arsene Wenger.
Lampard has been apart of teams who have sat deep and invited pressure, for example during the Mourinho eras at Stamford Bridge, and has clearly attempted to steer clear of a method that has been criticised by many.
Instead, with younger, arguably fitter bodies at his disposal, the Blues boss demands his players pressurise from the front, forcing their opponents into a mistake or to relinquish the ball. This is generally led by Mason Mount, the 21-year-old managing to offload his youthful energy into useful movements.
Mount is often supported by the equally exuberant Christian Pulisic, or the wiley Willian, who despite recently turning the wrong side of 30, still has a terrific burst of pace and stamina. In between this whirlwind of attackers, is the calming sea breeze of Olivier Giroud. Although he is not lightning quick, he closes down in close proximity, using clever movement or positioning to trap the defender.
Arsenal's main aim is to build from the back, beginning inside their own box and gradually make their way up the field. This is of course not without its risks; in the face of City's ferocious forwards, the ShkodranMustafi attempted to play around far too near to Emiliano Martínez's goal, eventually caught out by Raheem Sterling and only just surviving a near scare thanks to a covering midfielder.
However, when it does pay off, it throws shades to the swashbuckling Arsenal of old. Luiz is more than capable of playing in confined areas, and with the likes of Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka open to receive a pass, the Gunners have more than enough in their armory to get away with tight-rope walking football.
This battle of pressing and possession could very easily win or lose the game in either court. Chelsea could pounce at any moment and already be within touching distance of the Arsenal net, although if they manage to avoid the attentions of the Blues, it will be the Arteta's men who can take advantage of the space now afforded to them by a lack of numbers deeper infield.

Inside and outside

On the offensive, Lampard prefers his front men to come inside off their flanks, allowing freedom for the wing-backs to run into and execute a crossing opportunity.
Pulisic, in particular, has made a habit of arriving in the box late from either the left or right, or picking up the ball from deep and driving at defenders in an appreciation to the industry of Eden Hazard.
Mount is much more affective in between the lines, drifting into uncertain areas for opposing defenders and midfielders. He is as much a sharpshooter as he is a precision passer, typically the link in Chelsea's positive movements further afield.
On the other hand, Arteta relies on his forwards to stretch the pitch, knowing they have the pace to get in behind or the skill to go past their marker. Serial goalscorer Pierre Emerick Aubameyang tends to hang on the left, whereas club-record signing Nicolas Pepe cuts in from the right, with speed and trickery tucked in their locker.
In the centre of the pitch, Ceballos and Xhaka will likely face the duo of Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho, a matchup of maestro midfielders. Whilst Ceballos and Kovacic enjoy engaging attacks with fluent dribbling and attracting the tackle, Xhaka and Jorginho are the dictators from deep. The entire pendulum of the afternoon could swing on which partnership can outperform their opposite numbers in a defensive and offensive sense.

Back to basics

Both Lampard and Arteta have in some way transformed the face of their formers clubs that were on a downward spiral.
Sarri favoured progressive, often ponderous possession, which aggrieved fans and pundits, although he did ensure defensive stability. Lampard has whipped the slate clean, insisting his players go full throttle, rarely leaving the Blues scoresheet blank, yet they have certainly gone backward in the defending department.
Under Emery, Arsenal just simply didn't seem to have a plan B, let alone a plan A. There was confusion over his style and tactics, which certainly translated into their results and ultimately caused his sacking. Arteta, fresh from conquering all with City, has a clear mindmap of where he wants the Londoners to be, giving them an identity that had somewhat been smudged towards the end of the Wenger reign.
The FA Cup truly will be a chess match between two of the newest and brightest players in the country, and could be the building block for the future of Chelsea or Arsenal.
