Major League Soccer extended its league-wide training moratorium for all teams through Friday, May 15. The training moratorium was previously set to expire on April 24.
All training facilities will continue to be closed to players and staff. Players are expected to remain in their clubs’ markets. However, the league will continue to review requests from players on a case-by-case basis to relocate by car to a different city.
The league announced last week the resumption of match play will be delayed until June 8 at the earliest.
“Like all leagues, we are in discussion with our players about changes to player compensation due to the financial impact on the league and our clubs from the COVID-19 Crisis,” the league said in a statement about the match postponement. “We are seeking to work collaboratively with the MLSPA to find a solution that provides a safety net for all players, opportunity to earn full salary in the scenario where all matches are played with fans, and in particular provides protection for the players at the lower end of the salary scale.”
MLS commissioner Don Garber joins All In Challenge
MLS commissioner Don Garber is the latest sports figure to join the All In Challenge, a global sweepstakes initiative to raise funds for coronavirus relief efforts.
The winner’s name will replace the MLS commissioner’s signature on each of the official match balls when the league resumes play. The winner will also receive a version of the match balls and an all-expenses paid trip for four to the MLS All-Star Week in Los Angeles.
Fans can enter the sweepstakes through a donation of $10, $25, $50 or $100. All proceeds raised through the entries will be donated to Feeding America, Meals on Wheels, No Kid Hungry and World Central Kitchen.
Several other MLS owners have gotten in on the challenge as well. Inter Miami owner David Beckham’s sweepstakes prize is the chance to play 5-aside against Beckham and several teammates at the club’s stadium, along with a post-match lunch and seats in the owners suite for an Inter Miami match.
LAFC owner Will Ferrell is also raffling off a chance to watch a game with him from the owners’ suite, while the Colorado Rapids are offering the chance to fly on the team charter, stay in the team hotel and watch an away match from the executive box. Austin FC owner Matthew McConaughey is also offering a sweepstakes prize for his alma mater, the University of Texas — a chance for two fans to watch a game with him from his private suite at Darrell K Royal — Texas Memorial Stadium.

Former USMNT striker Chris Rolfe focuses on sustainability on Earth Day
Former MLS and USMNT striker Chris Rolfe has a new passion after retiring from the game — focusing on sustainable living practices. He is the Notre Dame men’s soccer director of operations, but Rolfe also volunteers with several sustainability farms, including So Others May Eat.
After growing up in Ohio, Rolfe said his interest in sustainability was piqued when he moved to Chicago to play for the Chicago Fire.
While playing in MLS, Rolfe took classes and volunteered at a variety of places as he moved to new clubs, including Dharma’s Garden in Boulder, Col.
Now that he is retired in Indiana, Rolfe practices his own sustainability methods, including growing a full outdoor garden, planting a wildflower meadow and conserving water and heat.
“The more we can think about our decisions in life, the better,” Rolfe said. “We’re all in this together, there’s one human race. It’s our responsibility to take care of our planet, our neighbors across the world.”
