U.S. Abroad: Yedlin's Magpies win League Championship

DeAndre Yedlin had a hand in Newcastle United's 3-0 win over Barnsley that clinched the English League Championship when Brighton & Hove Albion was held to a 1-1 by Aston Villa on the final day of the season. Americans Danny Williams (Reading) and Tim Ream (Fulham) will move into the promotion playoffs.

Yedlin's driven cross was flicked into the goal by Ayoze Perez in the 23rd minute to give the Magpies the lead. The play began on the right wing when Christian Atsu played a backheel to the streaking Yedlin.

Newcastle and Brighton had already clinched promotion to the Premier League. Newcastle will return to the EPL on its first attempt after being relegated. Brighton has not played in the top level of English soccer since the launch of the EPL in 1992.

Williams and Ream will square off when Reading and Fulham meet May 13 and 16 in the two-leg semifinals of the promotion playoffs. Huddersfield Town, managed by former U.S. international David Wagner, and Sheffield Wednesday will meet in the other semifinal series. The final will be played May 28.
