KAWASAKI FRONTALE TOP GROUP G TO REACH ROUND OF 16

Kawasaki: Kawasaki Frontale booked their place in the last 16 of the AFC Champions League as Group G winners after a 4-0 victory over bottom side Eastern SC on Tuesday helped the Japanese team jump from third to first in the standings.
The hosts enjoyed much the better of the first-half possession at Kawasaki Todoroki Stadium and Brazilian Rhayner nodded in Shintaro Kurumaya’s dinked cross from the left on 28 minutes to give them the lead, before Shogo Taniguchi rose highest to head home Kengo Nakamura’s corner from the right on the stroke of half-time.
Substitute Tatsuya Hasegawa bundled in Rhayner’s cross shortly after the interval to make it three as the hosts threatened to run riot. Tatsuki Nara did head in another Nakamura corner on 53 minutes but, despite the home side’s continued dominance, there would be no further breakthrough.
The victory means Kawasaki advance to the knockout phase on top of the table after Guangzhou Evergrande and Suwon Samsung Bluewings drew 2-2 in the group’s simultaneous kick-off as the Chinese side finished in second place – by virtue of a worse head-to-head record against Kawasaki – and their Korean opponents exited alongside Eastern.
