Guangzhou: Two-time champions Guangzhou Evergrande squeezed into the Round of 16 of the 2017 AFC Champions League on Tuesday as Ricardo Goulart scored twice to earn Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team a 2-2 with Suwon Samsung Bluewings.
The draw, coupled with Kawasaki Frontale’s win over already eliminated Eastern SC from Hong Kong, leaves Guangzhou in second place in Group G, with Kawasaki winning the group by virtue of a better head-to-head record against the Chinese Super League side.
Yeom Ki-heon gave Suwon the lead nine minutes into a game the Korean side had to win but Goulart’s brace – with his goals coming in the 17th and 68th minutes – gave Guangzhou breathing space and Kim Jong-woo’s 80th minute strike was not enough to keep Suwon alive in the competition.
