JEJU UNITED PROGRESS TO AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ROUND OF 16

Jeju: Korea Republic’s Jeju United progressed to the AFC Champions League Round of 16 for the first time on Tuesday, beating Gamba Osaka of Japan 2-0 to secure runners-up spot in Group H.
The hosts knew all three points would guarantee them a place in the knockout stages of this year’s competition, and they took the lead in the 29th minute at Jeju World Cup Stadium when Chung Woon beat the offside trap to meet a beautifully arced Marcelo Toscano ball in behind before lashing beyond an exposed Masaaki Higashiguchi in the Gamba goal.
Hwang Il-su then made the result safe in the 66th minute, evading Yosuke Ideguchi before curling an effort into the bottom right-hand corner from just outside the penalty area.
With Group H winners Jiangsu FC beating third-placed Adelaide United 1-0 in the group’s other game, Jeju ultimately finished five points clear in second place on ten points.
