Adelaide: Ji Xiang’s 81st minute strike ensured Group H winners Jiangsu FC proceed to the 2017 AFC Champions League Round of 16 with a degree of momentum after they defeated former finalists Adelaide United 1-0 on Tuesday.
Knowing that they needed to not only beat Chinese Super League visitors Jiangsu but also hope that Korea Republic’s Jeju United would drop points at home to Japan’s Gamba Osaka, 2008 runners-up Adelaide dominated the first half in South Australia but at half-time were yet to force Jiangsu goalkeeper Jiang Hao into a meaningful save with Baba Diawara and Sergio Cirio missing presentable chances from inside the area.
The A-League side continued how they left off after the restart but despite their dominance lacked the cutting edge on their final delivery. And with nine minutes of the tie remaining they paid for their prolificacy as Ji put Jiangsu in front with a fine strike from outside the area that zipped past Adelaide custodian Eugene Galekovic.
Jeju’s 2-0 win in Korea means Adelaide finish in third place and exit the competition, five points behind the K League Classic side who progress to the Round of 16 for the first time.
