Kevin Phillips has tipped Wolves to mount a serious challenge for the top-four this season after a “huge” victory over West Ham on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Sunderland and Aston Villa striker claimed Nuno Espirito Santo’s favourable fixtures present them with an “incredible” chance to qualify for the Champions League.
The Wanderers made a winning return to the Premier League this weekend with a 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened West Ham.
Second-half goals from Raul Jimenez and Pedro Neto helped them move up to sixth – level on points with fifth placed Manchester United.
Wolves welcome Bournemouth to Molineux on Wednesday before a trip to Villa Park on Saturday.
Phillips suggested Nuno’s side would be well-placed to push Chelsea for a top-four spot were they to win against the Premier League’s 19th and 18th positioned sides.
“The victory against West Ham was huge,” he told Football Insider.
“I have said all season that they are a wonderful team. I love watching them play.
“They have got very difficult matches because they are playing teams that need the points and they are the hardest games in my experience.
“They will not take it lightly but if they perform the way they have done you would fancy them to get points against these sides.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to push on after this win and get a European spot and if they finish in the top-four it would be incredible.
“I would not put it past them because they have some really good players.”
