Juventus 0 - Roma 0: Initial reaction and random observations

Make that seven straight Serie A titles. Time to update your friends.

For all of the scoreboard watching Juventus fans around Italy, Europe and the world alike have done the last few months, there was none of that to be had on Sunday. It didn’t matter what Napoli was doing at the Luigi Ferraris against Sampdoria. The only result that mattered was the one that happened on the Stadio Olimpico field.

Juventus needed a point against Roma to secure a seventh consecutive Serie A ttile.

And it was a point they ended up getting.

Scudetto No. 36 — come at me, bro — is officially Juventus’ to keep. A scoreless draw against 10-man Roma did the trick, as the two teams pretty much just put things into cruise control the last 20 or 25 minutes as the biscotto-like theme took over the proceedings in the Italian capital.

It didn’t really matter if Juve were the better side or not. They needed just one single solitary point to clinch their title — and that’s what they got.

It’s not two straight — that was done under the direction of Antonio Conte.

It’s not four or five straight — that was done after Juve transitioned from Conte to Max Allegri.

It’s now at seven. Seven freaking titles in a row. Nobody could have ever said they had done that in Serie A until Sunday’s result was over and done with.

Reminds me of one of American sports’ greatest hype-the-assembled-crowd moments...

I’m sure there will be video from Paulo Dybala, Medhi Benatia or Miralem Pjanic in the locker room and a few “SIAMO NOI SIAMO NOI!” chants happening in a matter of minutes. It only seems appropriate after getting the same kind of treat a few days ago following the Coppa Italia final against Milan.

Regardless, for the past five days, the Stadio Olimpico has been the home away from home for this current Juventus side. And while it was a star-studded second-half performance from Juventus that put Milan to bed in quick fashion on Wednesday, there was no four-goal onslaught or anything like that on Sunday.

Instead, in the ultimate cruise control showing, Juve wrapped up their seventh title in a row by barely getting out of first or second gear.

And hey, at the very least they showed all of Italy that, in fact, Scudetti can be won at the Stadio Olimpico. (Sorry, not sorry.) It just so happened that the likes of some of their best players over recent years — Pjanic, Benatia and Wojciech Szczesny — won it in a Juventus shirt. Oh well.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

• Juventus just clinched their seventh straight title, so all of those stupid turnovers that they had that could have led to Roma goals don’t really bother me as much now as they did an hour or so ago. If only everything in life could work that way.
• He hasn’t played for close to a month now, but watching Giorgio Chiellini on the sidelines the last few weeks has been quite enjoyable. Dude can barely sit still during the second half. You better believe there’s some management of some sort in his future.
• Juventus’ leading scorer when they won the first of their seven straight titles: Alessandro Matri with 10.
• Juventus leading scorer when they won the most recent one of their seven straight titles: Paulo Dybala with 22.
• So, basically, the squad has gotten a little better.
• Right before the second half got underway, the camera panned to Gigi Buffon sitting on the bench next to Chiellini. Buffon was holding a plastic cup of some sort. I’m sure it was nothing bad, but I’d love to know what Gigi was sippin’ on knowing that Woj had things covered in goal for the night.
• Think about Juve fan kids who are getting close to their teen years for a second. They’ve pretty much known title-winning seasons for as long as their fandom goes. Spoiled!
• As much as the #4ZAJUVE was a strong hashtag after the Coppa win, I’m not sure #MY7H looks as good. A for effort, though.
• Remember when we were wondering if Napoli were “hungrier” for the Scudetto than Juve were in January and February? Ha.
• This is a day to celebrate history. Let’s talk about transfers next week.
• Allianz Stadium is going to be an absolute mad house next Sunday. Seriously. Hellas Verona have already been relegated and have nothing to play for. If this does end up being Buffon’s final game, you know his teammates are going to want to give him the proper send off with not just a clean sheet. It’s gonna be good, really good — and I can’t wait to see what the atmosphere is going to be like knowing what the biggest storyline in the season finale already is.
