Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher formed his Premier League Team of the Season, and included the likes Egypt international Mohamed Salah along with six of his Liverpool teammates.
Salah has been under a lot of criticism this season as many football personalities labelled him selfish and believe he’s becoming less essential for the club.
The Egyptian has made 29 direct goal contributions (20 goals and nine assists) in 40 games for Liverpool across all competitions this season.
Additionally, he’s the Premier League’s third top goalscorer with 16 goals, three behind leader Jamie Vardy, and is on the verge of helping Liverpool lift their first ever Premier League title.
While coming up with his best Premier League XI for SkySports, Jamie Carragher praised the former Roma man even though he’s not having his best season since joining the Reds.
“Like [Roberto] Firmino, I think Salah has had better seasons for Liverpool, maybe even both of his previous two seasons, but he’s still right up there with the top goalscorers and the other goalscorers do not play on the right, they play as centre-forwards,” Carragher said.
“I could not think of any other player in the league really who plays from that side who does as well as him,” he added.
The 42-year-old included a number of other Liverpool players in his team, including Senegal international Sadio Mane over Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling.
“It was a toss-up between Sadio Mane and Raheem Sterling, but Mane just has the edge this season,” he continued
“Sterling had a brilliant start to the season but has maybe gone just off the boil in the last couple of months.
“They basically both play on the left, so what I didn’t want to do is fudge it and put players out of position. So I have just got to go with Mane.
“He’s not just a goalscorer and he’s different from Salah, who I see as a real goalscorer, taking the penalties and looking to score every game. Mane is more involved in general play,” he concluded.
Jamie Carragher’s final XI:
Goalkeeper: Dean Henderson (Sheffield United).
Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Djik, Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson. (All Liverpool).
Midfielders: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool) and Jack Grealish (Aston Villa).
Forwards: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) and Said Mane (Liverpool).
