A true delicacy to close out Saturday’s Bundesliga lineup as Dortmund and Monchengladbach lock horns in 97th edition of Borussen derby.
Monchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund: Match Preview
Borussia Monchengladbach got back to winning ways last Saturday in the Bundesliga, beating Augsburg 3-2 away from home with all the goals raining during exciting second half, as Ramy Bensebaini scored on his return from injury and captain Lars Stindl netting a match-winning brace.
It was an all important win for the Foals following a disappointing draw against Hoffenheim the week before, which put an end to their winning streak at Borussia-Park; their title hopes are still in the air as Borussia sit at 4th place with a game in hand, closing the gap on second placed RBL, with Bayern staying six points away.
In front of their own fans, Marco Rose’s men are nearly invincible as they boast sublime record of eight wins, two draw and one loss, coming at the hands of Leipzig far back in August which spurned them to make eight-game winning run in Mönchengladbach, undone by Hoffenheim’s lucky 90th minute brace.
The English wonderkid Jadon Sancho scored his 14th Bundesliga goal of the season to earn Borussia Dortmund all three points against disciplined Freiburg side at the Signal Iduna Park.
Third back-to-back league victory for BVB, their sixth since 2020 kicked in, with their only defeat in the New Year being in that classic 4-3 showdown at Leverkusen’s BayArena which was enough to keep their 3rd place at Bundesliga table, closing the gap on the leading duo and stay ahead of their next rival.
Lucien Favre’s gung ho approach on the road is brilliant, when it works. When it doesn’t, when they’re faced against side who’s able to proficiently use all that space left in behind, they struggle even to salvage a point, with already mentioned Leverkusen matchup (and Hoffenheim beforehand) being prime example of this.
Florian Mayer is the only one 100% MIA for the hosts, with Marcus Thuram, Denis Zakaria, Ibrahima Traoré and Lászlo Bénes going down the wire due to illness that’s spread through Mönchengladbach’ camp.
Marco Reus is still sidelined due to muscle injury he picked up few weeks back and he should be only one unavailable for a trip to Borussia-Park; there’s rumors circulating that Mats Hummels might sit this one out too but as far as I know, he should be in the squad come Saturday.

Monchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund: Prediction
While Dortmund is more successful of the two in these derbies in recent history, I just can’t gloss over Mönchengladbach’s brilliant season and spectacular performances at their home ground. BVB has their share of faults, most of which are easily visible when they face exactly the type of side their next opponent is and with CL rematch in Paris surely on their minds, I’m boldly backing our hosts to edge it and end their cursed streak versus Borussia Dortmund.
Oh, there will be goals. No doubt about that. Both of these are exceptionally prolific going forward, just as bad defensively so they should easily get over this margin, perhaps even before the break.
