The Werkself are hoping to keep their Champions League dreams alive when they welcome stuttering Eintracht Frankfurt at BayArena in Saturday’s Bundesliga clash.
What a turnaround from Leverkusen after going down 1-0 at the break; Die Werkself turned the DFB Cup quarter-final against Union Berlin around after the restart following a second yellow for Union’s Lenz as Bellarabi, Aranguiz and Moussa Diaby all scored in the 3-1 win, firing the Black and Reds into the semifinal.
As for the league, Bayer remains fifth placed, following their 1-1 draw in Leipzig during the first day of March, two points off Borussia Monchengladbach at 4th, who sadly have a game in hand over the Werkself but with ten more rounds to go, Peter Bosz’s kindergarten still can hope to overtake them.
After 2020 kicked in, Leverkusen has been nothing short of perfect at BayArena, having won against Augsburg, Fortuna and Dortmund, marking that a great improvement over their past exploits in front of their own fans where, while they’ve won fair share of games, have also stupidly dropped points in matches they should have easily won.
In a physical if unspectacular contest at the Commerzbank-Arena, it was the Eagles who emerged victorious against Werder Bremen on Wednesday night thanks to André Silva and Daichi Kamada getting on the scoresheet, pushing Eintracht Frankfurt through to the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal
But back in the league, the Eagles seem to have fallen back on their old habits, following their short-lived outburst. Adi Hutter’s men suffered back-to-back defeats and the one against Dortmund might be acceptable, same outcome against Union Berlin at home turf was just shameful.
This put them on 12th on Bundesliga ladder, far away from continental football they desire so they might as well shift their focus on Europa League and qualify through that competition.
Eintracht is unrecognizable during road trips this season, having won just seven points across this year. And when you put things in perspective, the Eagles are the most ineffective side on the road.
Even Werder, a team that haven’t won since BC, higher ranked than you, might have a few questions for Hutter and his men.
Aside from Kevin Volland, who’s out for a season, Peter Bosz has all his men available for Saturday’s showdown.
Whilst the Eagles will miss the usual suspects. Bas Dost, Gelson Fernandes, Nils Stendera and Marco Russ.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Eintracht Frankfurt: Prediction
Year or two ago, this would be a derby of the round, but today, there’s one clear winner. And that’s Bayer Leverkusen.
The Werkself are in terrific form at the moment, winning on all fronts, of similar fitness level as Eintracht (having both played in the Cup during the week) and having lost last time the two faced, they’ll be gunning for revenge and most likely will get it against Bundesliga’s worst traveling side.
Not without casualties, though. Frankfurt might be guilty of many wrongdoings and missteps during this season, but they rarely disappoint in one area as the Eagles almost always net a goal or two on the side. Something they’ll do at BayArena again, as their h2h record tells us.
