Werder Bremen will be desperate for win when they make a pilgrimage to the capital where they’ll face oddly entertaining yet equally unpredictable Hertha on Saturday lunchtime.
Hertha Berlin vs Werder Bremen: Match Preview
A side that lost 5-0 at home to Cologne two weeks ago was on the verge of another shameful defeat but the Berliners rallied their troops and came back from three goals down to draw their game against Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-3 last Friday night.
After rising from the ashes and flying up to the safety of midtable under Jürgen Klinsmann, Hertha BSC has been slowly sliding down and being currently placed 14th, six points off first team below the line, the Old Lady is once more threatened by relegation dogfight should their performances doesn’t improve.
Change of managers didn’t help, new players didn’t seem to help as Hertha still can’t buy a win in front of their own fans, leaving the capital wide open for pillaging as Mainz and Koln both went back home with all the riches and points in the bags, with Die Alte Dame remaining one of the league’s most generous home sides, without a triumph at Olympiastadion since December, their only one in last nine outings in there.
Werder’s players had a week off as their home game against Eintracht Frankfurt has been postponed at short notice because Frankfurt’s Europa League return tie at RB Salzburg on Thursday night was moved to Friday evening after strong winds in Austria.
That might be just what the doctor ordered, giving the River Islanders more time to prepare for the upcoming clashes and finally put an end to their five-game losing streak which have them placed 17th in the league, with humongous eight points off safety but five points away from relegation play off places and a chance to lessen that gap should they get something from their game in hand.
While they’re downright terrible in Bremen, during their travels Die Werderaner has actually picked up some points, with their latest two wins fought over at Wolfsburg and fellow relegation stragglers Fortuna Dusseldorf though both of them came about month or two ago with Werder narrowly losing on last two outings.
Hertha’s current manager, Alexander Nouri should have all of his men available for selection on Saturday with Dedryck Boyata coming back into squad after dealing with some personal issues and Peter Pekarik fully recovered following thigh injury.
His counterpart on Werder’s bench, Florian Kohfeldt is dealing with a bit of an injury crisis at the moment, with Fin Bartels, Claudio Pizarro, Niclas Füllkrug, Kevin Möhwald and most likely Philipp Bargfrede all remaining on the sidelines for a trip to the capital.

Hertha Berlin vs Werder Bremen: Prediction
Looking down the memory lane, duels between the two has usually been uncompromising affairs, hard to watch from the stands, quality of football reminiscing levels even below Zweite, with Werder going out on top more often than not with their last clash being the perfect example of it, dire, drab 90 minutes of football I wish I could get back so with that in mind, I’d go with Under 3 goals.
While I honestly expect another draw when these two beautiful messes lock swords, something in the back of my mind is telling me that Hertha might end up getting something from this game, despite their unflattering record, both at home and against Werder.
But they’ll be at full strength, with way better players and imperative of a win if they wish to avoid another relegation struggle so, solely on a hunch, I’d back the Old Lady.
