Daily Schmankerl: Bayern and Dortmund in talks with Meunier, Arp to stay with U23’s, Gnabry’s Arsenal teammates told him to leave

Thomas Meunier’s time in Paris is coming to an end. Could the next stage in his career be in Germany?

Thomas Meunier is a 28-years-old right-back at Paris Saint-Germain, but not for long: he will be a free agent this summer.

It emerged that both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund spoke with Meunier’s people prior to PSG’s visit to Dortmund on February 18 for the first leg of their Champions League clash. Dortmund is on the lookout for a replacement for Achraf Hakimi, who will presumably return to Real Madrid at the end of his loan.

Bayern, of course, is still searching for a replacement for Joshua Kimmich at right-back, so that Benjamin Pavard can play primarily in central defense — although given Pavard’s recent performances, Bayern might be looking at Meunier as the potential backup.

Meunier has played over two thousand minutes for PSG this season, scoring one goal and assisting two.

Hansi Flick: Fiete Arp to stay on U23 team for now (AZ)

It’s been one hell of a season for striker prospect Fiete Arp: a wicked flu and a broken arm and hand basically cost him the entire Hinrunde. Arp scored the decisive 1-0 goal in Bayern II’s victory over first-place Unterhaching in his second start.

Flick addressed Arp’s situation:

I have spoken at length with Fiete. He’s with the U23’s, is doing well there. That is where his way is right now! He can get playing time there, provided an assist, scored a goal. I’m happy for him, because he’s a fine young man!

The eventual goal remains to bring Arp up to the first team. “Our focus,” Flick said, “is to have Fiete playing with us at some point. But you also have to say that it’s a long way! We’re supporting him where we can.”

Of course, it rhymes in German. The ultras displayed yet another banner later that said,

Despite deaths in Qatar you celebrate anyway: stupid, dishonest hypocrites.

The ultras had two more: a good ol’ “Fuck you, DFB” and “Hopp’s mother — the mother of all problems!”

Serge Gnabry’s Arsenal teammates told him he should leave (Express)

It’s something of an old story. According to “Spanish football expert” Guillem Balague, even Serge Gnabry’s teammates at Arsenal encouraged him to leave. Balague told Genting Bet (seriously),

Arsenal let Serge Gnabry go because you don’t know sometimes that players are going to become that good.

He was not at his best and it basically was suggested even by players of Arsenal at the time that going back home would help him, which it did.

Gnabry signed with Werder Bremen for just €5m after flopping on loan at West Brom because his coach Tony Pulis thought he just wasn’t quite good enough.

But all’s well that ends well: Gnabry is a starter at Bayern Munich and for Germany, and West Brom is in first place — in the Championship.
