Freiburg’s Red&Blacks are hoping to put an end to their winless streak when they welcome surprise hit of the season to Schwarzwald-Stadion in Saturday’s Bundesliga skirmish.
Freiburg vs Union Berlin: Match Preview
Jadon Sancho was a man of the hour as he tapped home Thorgen Hazard’s pass for his 16th goal of the season and fired Borussia Dortmund to a narrow 1-0 win over Freiburg at Signal Iduna Park last Saturday afternoon.
It was ninth defeat of the season for Red&Blacks, their second in a row, as they slipped down to ninth but with Europa League still within hand’s reach, should they wish to pursue it as the teams ahead are going through equally hard times as Christian Streich’s men.
Freiburg at home is a weird beast, unpredictable on their best days as they’ve held their own against Dortmund, triumphed v title chasing RB Leipzig but also lost to two out of three relegation strugglers in the span of three weeks.
Christopher Lenz’s second yellow in the 71st minute was a game changer for Union Berlin, who couldn’t hold back Bayer Leverkusen from making a come back, ending their DFL Pokal journey for the season on the brinks of semifinal.
But overall, Urs Fisher can be proud what his pupils accomplished this year, adding to Cup quarter final their Bundesliga heroics as they’ve climbed their way to 10th place, a miracle following their start to the campaign.
Despite dropping the 2-0 lead last Saturday at home to Wolfsburg, the Iron Ones are coming to Freiburg encouraged by two back-to-back away victories at Frankfurt and Bremen, which is a first one for them this year, marking a huge improvement following their five-game winless run on the side, having lost four of them.
Freiburg’s Mike Frantz and Robin Koch are questionable for Saturday as both have fallen victims to the seasonal flue with Janik Haberer, Luca Waldschmidt, Chang-Hoon Kwon and Amir Abrashi remaining out of contention till foreseeable future.
Joshua Mees, Laurenz Dehl and Akaki Gogia are long term absentees, still out for Union Berlin, which are coming into this clash stronger, with several players returning to squad after a period on the sidelines.

- Freiburg have 2-0-2 record at home versus the Iron Ones.
- In their last Bundesliga encounter, Union has comfortably beaten Freiburg 2-0.
- The Iron Ones are on a three-game winning streak v Red&Blacks.
- They were also first to score, doing so in four of their last five encounters.
- Our hosts have trouble keeping the ball out of their net as Freiburg conceded at least a goal last three times they’ve played Union.
- Four of their last five games ended with more than 2.5 goals.
Freiburg vs Union Berlin: Prediction
Freiburg at home and Union on their travels play very similar style of football, tight lines and compact formation while waiting for opponent to make the first move and striking on the counter.
Both are barely averaging more than 2 goals per match (Union scored/conceded somewhat more though that was against more expansive sides, unafraid to go all out) so I believe we’re up for another game of chess.
That will end on a tie. While I would usually side with Union against out-of-form Freiburg, the Iron Ones had a tough midweek game against Leverkusen, their fitness level will be below those of Red&Blacks so I think they’ll shut up shop, play it safe and we’ll get a 0-0 or 1-1 draw.
