Stranraer chairman Iain Dougan can’t believe the reconstruction task force didn't ensure they had enough Premiership support before starting the process of trying to reshape Scottish football.
Dougan was delivered the hammer blow news that his club’s relegation had been confirmed when his partner phoned him as he left work on Friday evening.
The Stair Park outfit will return to the bottom tier of Scottish football after five seasons in League One. They were eight points adrift at the bottom with a game in hand one of nine they had left.
Dougan said: “I’m not particularly surprised. Maybe just a bit that it was the Premiership where it failed.
“I would have thought they would have ensured they had adequate numbers at Premiership level willing to go for it before the process actually started.
“I would have thought they were more likely to fail through a lack of support at lower level.
“I got the news from my partner as I left work. It’s a blow, there’s no getting away from that.”
Stranraer had been strong advocates for a move to 14/10/10/10 stating it would have penalised the fewest clubs for a situation not of their making.
“The only person I spoke to in the whole process was Gary Deans at Falkirk who phoned me to get my views on certain scenarios,” Dougan said.
“When we voted against the resolution last month there was no talk of reconstruction at that point. That got flung in as a caveat later in the day but we had already voted against the resolution.
“I can’t believe they would have these talks in the first place if they weren’t sure of getting the numbers in the top flight.
“I think they would always have got them in the Championship but maybe not League Two.”
Partick Thistle and Hearts have previously threatened legal action if they were forced to take the drop.
But Dougan said that wouldn’t be an option: “Legal actions are expensive,” he said. “We’re one of the Scottish minnows.”
