Benevento defender Luca Caldirola reveals he almost joined Tottenham, “the team I supported, but my parents said no” and he stayed with Inter.
The centre-back is now 29 and returned to Italy in January 2019 after a long spell in Germany with Werder Bremen and Darmstadt.
“I was captain of the Inter youth team, played for Italy at every youth level, so I had a lot of admirers in England too,” Caldirola said in an Instagram livestream on Casa Di Marzio.
“Tottenham were tracking me and they were the team I supported, but my parents said no to the move. I was disappointed, but then Inter had given me by first professional contract, so I was happy to remain too.”
However, after impressing in the Italy Under-21 side, he was sent out on several loans before the sale to Werder Bremen in 2013.
“The only real regret about my career is the timing. I came through the Inter youth academy when the senior squad was winning everything, so there was no room for me.
“It’s not so much a regret, I guess, as just the way things were at that moment.”
