West Ham ended their recent season having conceded 68 goals in 38 leagues and desperately need a new centre-back to bring stability to the side’s defence.
The Hammers are in luck though as the perfect option to fix their defensive issues is reportedly on the chopping block at Arsenal.
Football.London reported on Monday that Calum Chambers could be allowed to leave as part of a summer shake up at the Gunners, despite ending the season in decent form.
The football news outlet claimed that 6ft defender’s overall performances had been mixed in his latest campaign, and that with Arsenal no doubting wanting to finish higher than sixth next season, could be available to sign.
The enforcer made 24 appearances for the Gunners’ first-team last season, and while all his displays weren’t rock-solid, there was enough shown to suggest that he would be an instant fix to the Hammers defence.
Chambers is strong in the challenge, seems to make the right decision more often than not and is comfortable when on the ball.
When you take those three attributes into account and partner them with the fact he is still only 23-year-old, he could be a successful presence in the Hammers defence for many seasons to come.
It seems wrong that the defender’s future at a top-six side like Arsenal is even in jeopardy but with Arsene Wenger departing the club, the new manager is likely to want to bring players to the club that are familiar to him.
This could see the Hammers snap up a talent such as Chambers with great ease, as the 23-year-old will no doubt want his career to not stagnate at a club that are about to limit his first-team opportunities further.
Therefore the Hammers should go into overdrive to secure the services of Chambers this summer as if he is set to leave the Emirates, he has to be welcomed to the London Stadium in order to solve West Ham’s huge defensive issue.
