The Egyptian has thrived since returning to England
Frank Lampard has praised former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah after Liverpool's 2-1 win over Manchester City and explained why the forward reminds him of Lionel Messi.
Goal number 39 of a prolific season for the Egypt international came in the second leg of the Reds' Champions League tie against the Premier League leaders as he netted the all important away goal which killed off any hopes Pep Guardiola's side had of overturning a 3-0 deficit.
It's Salah's first season back in England after joining the Merseyside giants from AS Roma - whom he could come up against in the semi-finals - last summer.
The Serie A outfit purchased the 25-year-old in 2016 after taking him on loan for a season from the Blues.
That decision has ultimately come back to haunt the west London outfit and Lampard has admitted that he didn't know what the winger was capable of when they were teammates.
"No. But he didn’t get that many chances to show that," Lampard said on BT Sport. "But he’s released himself from the wing. At Chelsea he was seen as a winger. He didn’t have much impact but there were a lot of players ahead of him, the likes of Eden Hazard who was older than him.
"By releasing himself from the wing he’s been able to show his brilliant intelligence. Even for the goal. "Sometimes we watch Lionel Messi and he’s great at just standing in areas.
"Salah’s started to do that, just standing in areas and all of a sudden the ball comes to him and he goes."
Salah was on the scoresheet against his former club earlier in the season when the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Anfield and will have one eye on next month's meeting at Stamford Bridge.
