Al Wasl win heats up race for ACL spot
Dubai: Al Wasl secured their first Arabian Gulf League win in six matches, defeating Ajman 2-0 at Rashid Bin Saeed Stadium in the final game of matchweek 20.
Fabio de Lima opened the scoring for the Cheetahs in the 28th minute. The Brazilian showed fantastic footwork inside the box to dribble past three defenders before placing his shot at the far corner.
Lima turned from scorer to provider after the break, supplying a defence-splitting through pass for his compatriot Caio Canedo who slotted with his left past the Ajman goalkeeper to double Al Wasl’s lead in the 79th minute.
The Oranges were reduced to ten men in the dying seconds of the game after Waleed Al Yamahi saw red for bringing down an opponent.
The result means Al Wasl close the gap on third place Al Wasl to a single point to keep the race for the final AFC Champions League spot hot with two games to go.
Fixture Timings
The Pro League Committee has announced that matchweek 21 of the AGL will take place on April 20 and 21.
In the opening match of the matchweek 20, Al Wasl host Hatta on April 20 at 18:00 local time, while Emirates travel to Dibba and Shabab Al Ahli play away at Al Dhafra.
Two matches will take place on Saturday at 18:00 hours, with Al Wahda facing Ajman and Al Nasr hosting Al Ain. The 20:30 kick-off between Al Jazira and Sharjah concludes the action.
Meanwhile, matchweek 21 of the Arabian Gulf Reserve League will take place on April 21 and 22, with Hatta hosting Al Wasl on Saturday at 17:55 and Emirates playing Dibba at the same time.
Saturday’s reserves games conclude with Shabab Al Ahli meeting Al Dhafra at 18:00.
Three Arabian Gulf Reserves League take place at 18:00 on Sunday; Al Ain face Al Nasr, Sharjah play Al Jazira and Ajman meet Al Wahda.
The scheduling of the fixtures takes into account allowing equal chances between teams competing for the title and to escape the bottom two places.
Earlier, Sebastian Tagliabue’s hat-trick helped Al Wahda keep their hopes of winning the title alive with a 3-2 win over Sharjah.
With just two more matchweek remaining, the top two teams are separated by only four teams. Leaders Al Ain are on top with 47 points after winning 14, drawing five and losing just one game so far in the league.
While second place Al Wahda have 43 points from as many games. They have won 13, drawn 4 and lost three matches.
If Al Wahda go on to win both their remaining matches and Al Ain lose then they will go on par with the leaders, where the goal difference can play a vital role. However, it is possible but looks improbable as Al Ain need just a draw to take an assailable lead in the league and they are playing their next match against Al Nasr the next round.
