MLS players return to training ground for voluntary individual workouts

D.C. United announced Thursday that they would begin holding voluntary individual workouts Segra Field in Leesburg, Virginia, home of D.C. United’s United Soccer League (USL) affiliate Loudoun United FC, on Friday, May 29. The move coincides with an announcement from Virginia Governor Ralph Northam that the state will enter phase one of easing its economic shutdown on Friday.
Later on Thursday, Chicago Fire FC also announced that they had also been cleared to begin holding voluntary individual workouts, and would start those on Friday at their former home of SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois, where the club continues to maintain its practice facility.
On Monday, Montreal Impact, New York Red Bulls and NYCFC received clearance to return to the training fields for the start of voluntary individual workouts
MLS clubs have commenced training on a rolling basis since May 6, pending approval of their training plans by MLS and local authorities. It's the first training of any kind at club facilities since MLS instituted a full team training moratorium following the suspension of league play on March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That moratorium is currently set to run through June 1 and matches are suspended until at least June 8.
All player workouts are voluntary and must be conducted in compliance with detailed health and safety protocols created in consultation with medical and infectious disease experts (see full list of safety protocols). This video illustrates the protocol, which provides players with a controlled training environment.
