Premier League games aren’t yet back on the agenda, but there’s still plenty going on elsewhere in the world of football.
For Everton, talk on Friday evening is over potential transfer moves this summer and the Premier League's latest statement.
Santos winger linked with Goodison Park switch
One of South America’s biggest talents right now isn’t a Brazilian or an Argentinian, but Yeferson Soltedo, a Venezuelan winger currently playing with Santos.
The 22-year-old has plenty of admirers in Europe and is keen to make his mark here, and told YouTube channel El Drink Team Original that he plans to move this year. What’s more, Santos president Jose Carlos Peres told Calciomercato that Everton are among the clubs to have already asked after Soltedo’s availability.
He’s rated at around €35 million (£31m) and already has 17 international caps to his name, scoring his first senior goal for Venezuela in November against Japan.
Villarreal injustice still irks McFadden
Having reached the qualifying round for the Champions League group stages in 2005, Everton would have hoped for a kind draw to reach the competition proper - but were handed a difficult task in facing Spanish side Villarreal.
Former Toffees attacker James McFadden says the defeat over two legs still gives him a feeling of injustice, claiming there was very little reason for referee Pierluigi Collina to have disallowed an Everton goal from Duncan Ferguson.
“The way that it ended doesn't sit right with me,” he said.
“It was a massive injustice and it was a sore one. There was no clear reason that any of us could see why he'd given a foul. It was a brilliant header from Big Dunc, there was no foul.”
Collina retired shortly after the game, but it was too late for Everton, who exited the competition before it had even begun.
James Rodriguez a “statement” signing for Everton
It’s no secret that Everton are aiming to be ambitious in improving the team through the transfer market, but suggestions from Spain over a move for Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez would be a massive step forward.
That’s the view of Alex Bruce, who says it would be a “hell of a statement” to sign someone with the quality of the Colombian, who would represent a “coup” for Carlo Ancelotti. Moreover, that type of move would signal Everton’s intent to the wider market, having a big potential knock-on effect, says Bruce.
“It can also attract other players of that sort of calibre once you get someone of that ilk through the door. For them to get him, it’ll mean they mean business," he said.
