Chinese Super League football club Guangzhou Evergrande has started work on a landmark 100,000-seat home stadium, and is planning to build two more 80,000-seat stadiums elsewhere in China.
The club’s new home stadium has a spectacular lotus leaf-shaped design, is estimated to be costing RMB12bn (€1.56bn/$1.6bn), and when complete in 2022 will be bigger than FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou.
The club, which is owned by real estate developer Evergrande, announced its plans for the two additional stadiums on its WeChat account yesterday, saying: “We hope to replicate the concept of building a world-class sports culture commercial complex to more places and benefit more fans. It also lays the foundation for a series of world competitions to be held in China in the future.”
China was due to host the Fifa Club World Cup in 2021 – although this competition is now expected to be moved – and is due to host the AFC Asian Cup in 2023. The country has a longer-term ambition of hosting the Fifa World Cup, with a bid for the 2030 tournament previously mooted.
