NWSL: Seattle's Mathias handed three-game suspension
The NWSL's Disciplinary Committee suspended Seattle Reign FC defender Merritt Mathias for three matches and fined her an undisclosed amount for an an incident involving Portland's Emily Sonnett. It's believed to be the longest suspension handed down after the fact in the league's five seasons.
In the second half of the 2-2 tie in Portland, Mathias and Sonnett tangled near the end line and Mathias pulled the Thorns defender's hair. No card was issued on the play.
Mathias, who is in her fifth season in the NWSL, will serve the suspensions in the Reign FC's next three matches:
May 13 vs. Washington Spirit;
May 21 vs. Orlando Pride; and
May 27 at Houston Dash.
