Report: Jurgen Klopp makes Diego Carlos his priority target

Jurgen Klopp wants Diego Carlos above all, according to reports, and that has moved Liverpool into pole position.
Estadio Deportivo in Spain believes Klopp has made Carlos a ‘priority target’. That apparently means the club will make more money available to sign the defender from Sevilla.
And they’ll need that money. The outlet believes Carlos costs over £43m despite the current economic uncertainty – although, he shouldn’t cost his £65m release clause.
It’s a sizeable fee for a 27-year-old and one that only Liverpool will pay, apparently. There’s plenty of outside interest, too, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Napoli looking at Carlos.
Unlike Liverpool, however, they’ve all got problems. Barcelona are targeting other areas, Real have hit their limit on non-EU players, Atletico are considering cheaper targets, and Napoli don’t have the cash.
So the Reds are at the front of the queue.

What RTK has to say

A busy one, this. The one thing that really doesn’t add up is why Klopp would make a 28-year-old defender his priority target.
Liverpool already have four good centre-backs, although, Dejan Lovren may leave. But Lovren is fourth-choice – why would you spend so much money to replace fourth-choice?
Because Joel Matip and Joe Gomez both have more experience at the elite level than Carlos. Matip is roughly the same age, though, while Gomez is six years younger.
It just doesn’t quite add up. Carlos may take time to adapt, too, meaning your expensive signing could be nearly 30 by the time he’s at his best. Not a long-term investment, then.

Liverpool never spend a lot of money on players aged 27. They certainly don’t when they have good options in that area.
While Liverpool may want Carlos and compete for the player, the figures don’t really add up.
