Rangers set for invite to France for eight-team tournament - report

Lyon boss Rudy Garcia has spoken about plans to hold an eight-team tournament later this summer – and Rangers and Celtic could be invited along with sides from France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The French side plan to invite clubs from countries who curtailed their season because of Covid-19 and that could see the Gers lining up against the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax, with the report claiming PSG have already agreed to take part.

Garcia also hopes fans will be able to attend – which would no doubt go done well with Rangers fans who have been starved of seeing the Light Blues in action.

“The plan is for eight teams to play at the Groupama Stadium in two groups of four,” Garcia said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“It will include mainly French clubs, but also hopefully teams from countries who had their leagues stopped early too, like Scotland, Belgium and the Netherlands.

“We also want to invite supporters to this tournament too.”

The games would be held at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium and would be the Gers’ first visit there after it replaced the Stade Gerland in time for Euro 2016.

It also hosted the 2018 Europa League final, seating just short of 60,000 fans, and was also a host venue for Euro 2016 and the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
Rangers could also find themselves taking part in another eight-team tournament, according to reports, with UEFA apparently wanting to conclude the Europa League with a similar competition in Frankfurt in August.
