Mamelodi Sundowns’ media coordinator Khaled Ali said that there are no ongoing negotiations between the club and Al Ahly regarding a possible swap deal for Uruguayan forward Gaston Sirino.
Geraldo joined Al Ahly during the 2018-2019 season and despite having had a solid start to his life with the Cairo giants, the Angolan’s performances dropped massively throughout the second season.
The 28-year-old failed to make any real impact with the Red Devils this season, making only 10 appearances across all competitions and making zero direct goal contributions.
As a result, he has been constantly linked with a move away from the Red Castle. Many reports suggested that Geraldo would join South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns in a swap deal that would see Sirino go the other way.
These rumors were quickly debunked by the club’s media coordinator, Khaled Ali, who assured that they have no intentions of selling the Uruguayan.
“We only had oral negotiations regarding Sirino and we didn’t demand a swap deal with any players such as Geraldo,” Ali told OnSport FM.
“I received a phone call from an Al Ahly representative after the second leg. There was no official offer as he just told me that they’re interested in a player who still has three years in his contract.
“Sirino is a really important player for the Sundowns board and won’t be sold to Al Ahly or any other team. We didn’t even enquire about the possibility of making a swap deal with Geraldo or a possible transfer fee.
“The transfer fee isn’t important for the Sundowns owner, we’re not business oriented, we don’t need money as he pays for everything out of his own pocket. He wants to win another CAF Champions League title, like in 2016, but is facing a lot of competitions from North African clubs,” he concluded.
Since joining Sirino the Masandawana in in 2018, and has since made 90 appearances scoring on 22 occasions and providing 26 assists.
He also guided them to two consecutive South African league titles and one South African Cup, while also reaching the CAF Champions League semi-finals last season.
