San Jose Earthquakes 2, Houston Dynamo 2 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

Jahmir Hyka came off the bench for his first appearance of the season on Saturday, and made it count, as he scored a late equalizer to give the San Jose Earthquakes a 2-2 draw against the Houston Dynamo at Avaya Stadium.
Magnus Eriksson scored his second goal in as many games midway through the first half to put the Quakes ahead, as Jackson Yueill sent him a pass after a pirouette in the box, and Eriksson slammed home the one-timer.
After the halftime break, Houston got back into the reckoning, as Alberth Elis' shot was blocked by Earthquakes midfielder Anibal Godoy, but the block bounced neatly into the path of Tomas Martinez in the box and the Argentine slotted it into the net to tie up the game. They took the lead just after the hour mark, as Elis hit a sharp cross from the right flank, and Mauro Manotasgot a touch on it to redirect it in the goal.
But Hyka continued his late-game heroics from 2017, as he hit a shot that went just inside the far post in the 85th minute to split the points for the teams.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: It was a good back-and-forth match. Both sides had their moments, and ultimately the scoreline was a just outcome. Both teams will be itching for wins at this point, but there's something to build on, and to work on, on each side.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Hyka's shot was a sweet strike and following his role in reviving the Quakes' "Goonies" tradition last year, it was apt that he tallied the final goal on the night.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Martinez notched a goal and an assist for the Dynamo, and had the defense held firm late, his instigator tendencies would have wound up the Quakes enough to take three points from the match. As it was, the Argentine's attacking skills helped lead Houston to a decent result.
