Arsenal 2 Manchester United 0 - player ratings: Who impressed at the Emirates?

David de Gea 6 – Made a sensational save from Aaron Ramsey in the first half but was dramatically unlucky with the way Granit Xhaka’s deflected strike sailed over him.
Axel Tuanzebe 7 – A strong Premier League debut: picked out teammates with plenty of composure, kept tight to Alexis Sanchez and did well to surge forward on a few occasions.
Phil Jones 5 – Looked decidedly rusty during the opening stages, notably losing Danny Welbeck and Ramsey as Arsenal came close in the first half.
Chris Smalling 5 – Completely non-existent for Welbeck’s goal. Many noted prior to the encounter that the Englishman was playing for his Manchester United career at the Emirates and there was little on show to convince Jose Mourinho to hold on to him over the summer.
Matteo Darmian 5 – A lethargic performance from the Italian. Fought hard in the first half but looked as if he was running on empty in the build-up to Arsenal’s second.
Michael Carrick 6 – Held the ball well in the first half to keep Arsenal at bay and visibly guided Tuanzebe through passages of the game. Couldn’t exercise much influence in the second half.
Ander Herrera 6 – Battled hard as always against Granit Xhaka during the opening stages and showed enterprise going forward. Hooked off in the second half with Thursday’s clash with Celta Vigo in mind.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan 5.5 – Offered little going forward and struggled to keep track of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain going the other way. Another subpar display from the Armenian.
Wayne Rooney 5 – Could have taken advantage of Arsenal’s high line and Martial’s desire to run in behind but his execution was woeful. Dramatically out of his depth.
Juan Mata 6 – Made a promising start to the game after returning from over a month on the sidelines but could have done much more to help out Tuanzebe at right back.
Anthony Martial 6.5 – Another performance packed with energy and desire but ended up being something of an isolated figure as Man United’s attacking frontier struggled for fluidity.
