Two badly performing sides will be desperate for a late renaissance of sorts as Genoa meet Chievo on Sunday afternoon. The Grifone come into this game having earned a measly point from their last five games. Theoretically, that should see them in danger of relegation, but due to the misery of Palermo, Crotone, and Pescara, the Grifone are definitely safe.
At least for now. Genoa are six points above the drop, and with both Empoli and Crotone desperately trying to gobble up points, another slip-up here could see them dangerously close to being sucked back into the relegation battle.
As for Chievo, they have lost five straight matches. The Flying Donkeys have been grounded for a bit and shockingly shipped four against Cagliari and Bologna. Juventus could have also easily made mincemeat of their porous backline, but clearly the Bianconeri had their mind more focused on their then-upcoming Champions League battle with Barcelona and were looking for merely an academic result.
Genoa have been in freefall for a while, and Ivan Juric was recalled after Andrea Mandorlini failed to improve the club’s fortunes. Despite earning a draw against Lazio, that was the sole point from their last four games. They’ve conceded a whopping 14, whilst scoring just twice, and that was during the 2-2 stalemate with the Aquile.
Along the way they have lost 5-0 to Atalanta and 4-0 to Juventus, which isn’t too surprising especially given how strong both have been. But they will be disappointed to fail to even net against Udinese, losing 3-0 especially as the Zebrette haven’t always been at their very best this term.
They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their past eight home games, whilst Chievo have conceded in six out of their last seven matches. That could point to an open game, as both have less than solid defenses.

Genoa vs Chievo: Prediction
Chievo have conceded in all but one of their last seven games, and have been heavily beaten in some of their fixtures including four against Cagliari and Bologna. They are also the only team to lose twice to Crotone this season.
Although Genoa have had their struggles, they surely will be able to trouble Chievo’s defense, especially if young striker Giovanni Simeone is having a good day at the office. That being said, Chievo have managed to net 11 goals in their last 10 road fixtures, whilst Genoa’s leaky defense has seen them ship 14 goals in just their last four games.
Both teams have their defensive problems which likely points to both teams scoring. Their efforts also may cancel each other out.
