They destroyed Wolfsburg in the process.
Bayern Munich won their fifth consecutive Bundesliga championship with a 6-0 destruction of Wolfsburg. This is Bayern’s 26th Bundesliga title and 27th German championship overall.
After a slow quarter hour to open the match, Bayern turned it up a notch and left Wolfsburg in their dust.
David Alaba opened the scoring for Bayern with a free kick won by Thomas Müller on top of the Wolfsburg penalty area. While his free kick wasn’t perfect, there was enough pace on the shot up and over the wall that Koen Casteels wasn’t about to keep it out of the back of the net.
Robert Lewandowski would add two more before the end of the half, and Kingsley Coman — fresh off his new contract — was instrumental in both goals. On Lewandowski’s first, Coman had the “assist to the assist” from Thomas Müller. On the second, he found Lewandowski after a big run for the relatively easy goal.
The second half was a lot of good from Bayern and utter collapse from Wolfsburg. Arjen Robben, Müller, and Joshua Kimmich piled on the goals. As Wolfsburg slowly capitulated, allowing Bayern to do whatever they wanted.
There was a shocking moment in the second half after Luiz Gustavo conceded a clear, yellow card worthy, tactical foul on Renato Sanches. The former Bayern midfielder kicked the ball away and was shown a red card. As he mockingly applauded the referee, Gustavo had to be restrained by players from both Wolfsburg and Bayern before he finally left the field.
As the final whistle blew, Wolfsburg supporters roared in anger — mostly at their own team — while Bayern supporters cheered the newly crowned champions.
Bayern have three more games remaining in what will, from this point forward, be the Philipp Lahm and Xabi Alonso farewell tour. Bayern will host Darmstadt next weekend May 6 before traveling to RB Leipzig on May 13. Then, on May 20, the careers of the two legends will come to an end at the Allianz Arena when Bayern host Freiburg.
