Week 7 of the MLS season is in the books and it boasted two of the greatest games in recent memory. Here are the power rankings from a brilliant week of soccer.
MLS season power rankings rely less on confidence and more on game results the longer the season goes. Which teams still deserve the benefit of the doubt and which are showing their true colors?
The two best teams played one of the most exciting ties in recent memory in Atlanta, while Seattle finally scored a goal and a point at Sporting KC. But how did the rest of the team fare in the efforts to make their claims to contender status?
Read on for MLS Week 7 Power Rankings.

CHICAGO FIRE 1-3-1
Last week: 0-1 L vs LA Galaxy
Last rank: 19
Another poor showing where the fans can feel points were lost. This week, it seems Paunovic choose the wrong starting XI. Katai showed some promise but even Dax McCarty admits this team is below average. The Fire may actually be the worst team in the league.
22
DC UNITED 1-3-2
Last week: 1-0 W vs Columbus Crew
Last rank: 23
A ‘home’ win in Annapolis in the last game DC United has anywhere near home for 3 months came in the grittiest way possible. But it is a win for Ben Olsen’s team, and that should help lift the spirits in the locker room. With a long road trip looming, more tough performances will be needed to lift them to a manageable place in the standings.

PHILADELPHIA UNION 1-2-2
Last week: 0-2 L vs Orlando City
Last rank: 16
This team will be starved for goals all year. No point in signing a striker if the only service is hopeful crosses. No point in signing a midfield just to have CJ Sapong send souvenirs into the stands. Every other Philly team can trust the process, but the Union fans have reason for skepticism. Austin Trusty and Matt Real will have their growing pains but could grade out around league-average. It is actually the Union attack holding this team back more than the young defenders.

REAL SALT LAKE 2-3-1
Last week: 0-4 L @ NYCFC
Last rank: 20
Traveling across the country to face the best team in a midweek game after an emotional win was always going to be tough. Salt Lake came out flat, showed little energy and, in the end, should be thankful they did not give up four goals a half. This is the league’s worst defense paired with a toothless attack.
19
MONTREAL IMPACT 2-4
Last week: 1-3 L @ NYRB
Last rank: 12
Montreal cannot hold possession and is being outshot 3-to-1. The Impact rely on Piatti to beat teams in open play and Jession Vargas to beat them with top class free-kicks. Those two have the quality to win points with just an average team behind them, but players like Mancuso have been subpar so far this season.
18
MINNESOTA UNITED 2-4
Last week: 2-3 L @ Portland Timbers
Last rank: 17
Another disappointing loss for the Loons. Darwin Quintero offers hope going forward, but he has no real gamechangers behind him. The defense was poor, and Matt Lampson was indecisive and poorly positioned for the first two goals. Facing 16 shots seemed to rattle his nerves. Without some help, this whole defense will be shell-shocked before July.
