Now we need some help from Celta, Granada and Malaga this weekend.
Villarreal kept their momentum going for their European challenge with a 3-1 victory over Sporting Gijon today at the Estadio de la Cerámica. The Submarine dominated throughout and could have taken an early lead but Roberto Soriano’s shot was cleared off the line and he put another shot over when it might have been easier to score.
Ex-amarillo Moi Gomez came close to opening the scoreline for the visitors, but his shot ricocheted off the crossbar with Andrés beaten. But in the 33rd minute a Bakambu-Soldado interplay ended with the latter slotting home past Cuellar for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Sporting’s defense switched off just after the restart, and this time it was Bakambu who scored, Jonathan dos Santos being the provider. We soon had a great chance to score our third, but Baka’s pass was just behind Soldado and he directed it wide of the open goal. However, just before the hour mark Villarreal did get a third, courtesy of a pass from Soldado to Bakambu.
At this point it felt like Sporting were done, but they had nothing to lose and attacked bravely, being rewarded with a Douglas goal off a rebound from a shot by Victor. Villarreal’s defense didn’t always seem comfortable (after all, we had Bonera and Angel back there, two players who haven’t featured much) but no other goals were forthcoming.
3-1 final, I didn’t like how we switched off for awhile after being 3-0 up but can’t complain. Whoscored saw the same match I did: Bakambu, Soldado, Jona dos Santos and Rodri (who partnered Bruno in midfield) were the stars.
63 points now from 35 matches, but the Basque clubs won’t give us any breathing room.
Next up, some team called Barcelona....ENDAVANT!!!
