Vincenzo Spadafora says his government is ‘working on the protocol for team training’, but the Olympic committee warns football needs an ‘alternative’.
Spadafora has come under scrutiny for his handling of the post-pandemic football response, throwing today’s return to individual training into doubt when he claimed last night that ‘team training will not resume before May 18’.
However, Italy’s Minister for Sport and Youth clarified in a Facebook post that his statement on Sunday only referred to group work.
“Now we’re working on the protocol for training for team sports and the guidelines for the reopening of the facilities where grassroots sport is practiced,” he wrote.
“One step at a time.”
On the other hand, CONI President Giovanni Malago urged the FIGC and Lega Serie A to adopt a ‘Plan B’ in the event the season could not be completed.
“We’re in good company with the other sectors of the country,” Malago told Rai 2.
“Today a large part of sport has started again, and we hope to get everyone involved as soon as possible.
“As for restarting the season, I’ve let myself say football has the right and the duty to try to finish the campaign but also that it’s crucial to have an alternative to prevent everything from falling apart.”
