Federation of Royal Morocco Football (Frmf) has entered into an agreement with their Rwandan counterparts to build stadiums in all districts across the country repayable between a period of three to six years.
The two federations along with district mayors, Rwanda Housing Authority, Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Infrastructure among other stakeholders met at the Marriott Kigali Hotel over the weekend to consult on the way forward.
“We can agree to construct a 3000-seater stadium for each district and depending on its needs, we will be offering different options for the construction phases,” explained Hajji Mouad, the Frmf head of delegation.
Along with Architect Anouar Gueriri from Coter Terhrazaz Construction Company in Morocco, Mouad explained that construction would be down to each district or Government agency and according to their budget and plan of payment.
The Moroccan company has constructed up to 63 artificial stadiums and five natural grass ones in the North African nation and are in talks to construct another 40 stadiums.
Mouad said, “It is upon the districts to say that may be we need a playing turf installed first or construct all the stadium requirements at once from the stands to the dressing rooms and other facilities.”
“So after knowing the different needs of each district, then the technical team from both parties (Rwanda and Morocco) will sit down to draw a timeline when to begin the construction process.”
Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) president Degaule Nzamwita said, “Following this promising commitment, we have set up a team composed of Rwanda Housing Authority which will be representing the Ministry of Infrastructure, Ministry of Sports, Ferwafa and Ministry of Local Government who will work alongside the team from Morocco to study the requirements of each district and advise on the way forward but the general view from all who attended the meeting is that they are all eager to have the concept implemented immediately.”
Rwanda hosted Chan 2016 in four stadiums, two in Kigali, one in Huye in the Southern Province and the other in Rubavu in the Western Province.
The districts that already have stadiums are also included in this partnership including Rusizi, Nyamagabe, Nyanza, Gatsibo, Kirehe, Musanze, Gicumbi, Kamonyi and Kayonza.
President Paul Kagame earlier pledged to construct stadiums in Nyagatare, Ngoma and Bugesera while the most successful club in Rwanda, army side APR is considering constructing a stadium at the Kanombe Military Camp while Police FC is looking at a stadium in Gishari in Rwamagana district in the Eastern Province.
According to Ferwafa, this will be a huge step in developing the football infrastructure across the country as a step towards development of the game.
