5 things Real Madrid need to do to hold on and make the Champions League final

Real Madrid have a huge 3-0 lead going into the second leg at the Vicente Calderon. Atletico weren't able to manage a single away goal in the first clash, and they didn't really even put up much of a fight. However, at home, playing for pride now top of winning, Diego Simeone's men are sure to come out snarling. What do Real Madrid need to do to hold on and earn a trip to the Champions League final?

Keep your head, three stacks

Atletico probably aren't going to turn this one around. They haven't proven they've got the firepower to chalk back three goals against this rampant Real Madrid side and keep them off the scoresheet at the same time. The realization of that will kick in sooner or later, and things might get chippy. It's important that the Merengues keep their cool, or the cards could start flying and things could start getting weird. That's exactly what you don't want.

Keep it tight on set pieces

Atletico will throw everything they've got at Real Madrid, and set pieces are one of the most effective tools in the Colchoneros' locker. Diego Godin and the rest of his teammates are extremely effective and efficient from set piece situations, and Real Madrid will have to be on high alert throughout the match. All it takes is a split second of lost concentration, and Atleti are right back in this tie.

Manage the game through midfield

In front of their own fans, and with everything at stake, Atletico Madrid will come out with a lot of energy against their rivals. They'll be running at 100 mph pace, and it's important Real Madrid manage that energy by taking the air out of the ball in midfield. Toni Kroos and Luka Modric are masters of possession, and they'll need to dictate the pace of the game and keep things cool in the middle of the pitch with their passing ability.  

Better mark Saul

Saul Niguez has developed into one of Atletico Madrid's most potent threats this season. He's scored a number of important goals for the Colchoneros this year, and they'll have to pay close attention to his darting runs, quick interchanges and intelligent movement. 

Frustrate Antoine Griezmann

In the first leg, Antoine Griezmann could barely get a kick of the ball. Madrid dominated possession, and when Atleti did win it back, he was surrounded by Real Madrid players every time he even sniffed it. He'll be looking to change that in the second leg, and Real will have to be especially attentive to his constant movement. Keeping Griezmann out of the game means Atletico will probably struggle.
