Leighton Baines' well-placed penalty after Fellaini's foul earned a point for Ronald Koeman's side following Zlatan Ibrahimovic excellent opener
Marouane Fellaini suffered a nightmare return for Manchester United against Everton, by gifting his former club a last minute lifeline.
The midfielder had only been on the pitch as a sub for four minutes, when he stuck out a leg and hacked down Idrissa Gueye, to allow Leighton Baines to level from the spot in a dramatic finale.
Before that, only Zlatan Ibrahimovic had raised this game above the mundane with the one moment of quality that seemed to have won the match.
Yet if the Manchester United striker produced a memorable moment with a 40 yard lob, then it was a moment of madness that proved pivotal.
They can have few other complaints though, because for all their hard work, they were second best to a visiting team that in contrast to their Argie centre half, were in control for most of the contest, and only Fellaini's generosity gave them a point.
Here, our reporter David Maddock reacts with five talking points from Goodison.
1. How exactly has Marcos Rojo not yet been sent off in his Manchester United career?
The only reason, surely, is he simply hasn't played very much.
His two-footed tackle here changed the course of the game, and was the pivotal moment in the contest.
2. How do officials get it so wrong?
It's no use arguing that referee Michael Oliver didn't see the defender's horrible challenge on Idrissa Gueye, because he saw enough to brandish a yellow card.
He bottled it - pure and simple. Even then, surely a linesman should have seen how far off the ground Rojo was? Something is seriously wrong with Premier League officials at the moment.
3. How did Ramiro Funes Mori not read the ball bouncing even after Zlatan had lobbed goalwards?
Had the Everton defender not given up on the goal, he would have cleared from the line. That wasn't his only mistake though.
How does he get turned by someone as slow as Ibrahimovic in the first place? That is shocking defending.
4. How can sides who spent so much money in the summer be so ordinary?
They splashed a combined £200m in the summer, and yet this contest showed beyond doubt both teams are barely above the level of mid-table mediocrity, and undoubtedly a distance behind the current top five.
5. Is Fellaini's time at United over?
Bemoaned by many United fans for his lack of quality, Fellaini didn't need to give quality, he simply needed to be disciplined.
He couldn't even do that with his lazy challenge on Idrissa Gueye costing United dearly here.
This could now be the end for the Belgian.
