Mido Gaber scored a late winner as Al Ahly claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tala’a El-Gaish in the 27th round of the Egyptian Premier League on Thursday.
Al Ahly, who were held to a 1-1 draw with Entag El-Harby in the previous round, entered the game without their manager Hossam El-Badry and captain Hossam Ashour after they were suspended by Egyptian Football Association.
El-Gaish were the better side in the opening 20 minutes, as Al Ahly weren’t given much space to create any chances in their opponents’ half.
However, Al Ahly ended the first half with a narrow 1-0 advantage after they were awarded a penalty following a foul against Walid Soliman inside the box. El-Said stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to open the scoring for Al Ahly after 25 minutes.
The rest of the first half was uneventful as both teams failed to add more goals, but El-Gaish had a slight advantage as they dominated the midfield in the remaining minutes ahead of the break.
In the 56th minute, El-Gaish finally translated their control into goals as they managed to equalise after Essam Sobhi sent a powerful header into Ekramy’s net, who conceded in two successive games for the first time this season.
Four minutes later, El-Gaish were on the verge of taking the lead, when Hussein Youssef went one-on-one with Ekramy but his low driven shot hit the right post before it was cleared by Al Ahly’s defense.
Al Ahly lacked solutions in the first 20 minutes after the break and couldn’t break through El-Gaish’s strong defense.
In the 70th minute, Abdallah El-Said received a pass from Walid Soliman near the edge of the box and sent a powerful shot towards the net, but his effort was cleared by El-Gaish’s keeper Emad El-Sayed.
El-Gaish continued to threaten Al Ahly’s defense as they missed another big chance to take the lead but Ekramy forced a fine save to deny Amouri’s shot from close range.
Souleymane Coulibaly also missed a huge opportunity to give Al Ahly the lead in the 72nd minute when he received a long ball on the right side before dribbling past El-Gaish’s defense, but his low shot went wide.
In the remaining minutes, Al Ahly took control as El-Gaish decided to defend hoping to secure a point. Three minutes from time, Amr Gamal chested the ball to Mohamed Naguib who entered the box before sending the ball wide.
Al Ahly waited until the fourth minute of added time to score the winner after substitute Mido Gaber received Momen Zakaria’s low cross and sent a close-range shot that was deflected into the net, putting Al Ahly a step closer to the league title.
Following thr victory, Al Ahly restored the eight-point lead at the top of the table with 71 points. Meanwhile, El-Gaish are 10th with 35 points.
