Earnie Stewart keeping belief in winless Union, not planning changes

ESPN

Philadelphia Union sporting director Earnie Stewart is not planning on making a change "for change's sake" despite going eight games without a win to open the MLS season.
Dating back to last year, the club has gone 16 games without a victory, and began the current campaign with four draws and four defeats.
But despite the mounting pressure on 37-year-old coach Jim Curtin, Stewart is taking a longer perspective.
"You can pretty much know if you have a good coach or a bad coach," Stewart told reporters. "I have been in situations where changes have been made for change's sake. However you want to view it, some were successful. Some were not successful. It is not something I just believe in."
The former U.S. national team midfielder also said that if a change is eventually required, that the club's "philosophy" will remain the same.
"I am not saying nothing will ever change because that is not the case," he said. "You see names change and everything, but the philosophy and thought we have won't change just because we are losing. It wouldn't change me if we would win a couple of games in a row."

The Union are already seven points adrift of the playoff spots in the Eastern Conference with nearly a quarter of the season gone, but Stewart still believes the team can recover and improve on last season, when it earned the final spot on goal difference.
"Last year we made the playoffs and I still feel like we can make the playoffs this year," Stewart said. "Because from a broader perspective, apart from what the results are and how we're playing, I believe we have a better group of guys. There's more talent there."
However, Stewart also admitted that getting out of their current rut quickly will be paramount if they are to turn the season around.
"If you win four, five games in a row, the chances that you win number six and seven are pretty good because everybody feels good about it," he said. "But it also works the other way around, and that's the situation that we are in right now. The key is to get out of that as quickly as possible."
