Al Ahly urge Egypt FA to resume Premier League amid COVID-19 outbreak

The Egyptian Premier League was suspended last month due to the  outbreak as the total number of COVID-19 cases in Egypt reached more than 5,000 cases.
As a result, the EFA have not yet set a resumption date for the league with many clubs facing financial repercussions due to the pandemic, the reason that led Al Ahly to release a statement on Saturday.

“There is no reason to rush the decision to cancel the league since there is still enough time as the Olympic Games were postponed for next year, as well as the African qualifiers,” an Al Ahly statement said.

“And if we take into consideration that the current season started last September, and therefore, the new season can start in October, as it happened in the past.”

Within their statement, Al Ahly explained that if the league remains put on hold, clubs in the league will not earn their sponsorship revenue.

In addition, the record champions also explain that most league clubs have paid around 85% of the wages for players, staff, and managers for the current season while not receiving half the amount of earnings they should from sponsorships, TV deals, etc.
It’s worth noting that the EFA is set to receive a total amount of $500,000 as part of FIFA’s virus relief funds during the coronavirus crisis as football remains halted.
The EFA had extended the suspension of footballing activities in Egypt until mid-May, however, it is likely that football remains put on hold for a longer period as the total number of COVID-19 cases in Egypt continues to significantly rise.
