Tottenham interest in Gerson cast into doubt by South American football expert

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the Brazilian player.

South American football expert Tim Vickery has been discussing Tottenham Hotspur’s apparent recent interest in Flamengo midfielder Gerson, and appeared to pour some cold water over the rumours ever being necessarily true.
It was reported by Goal earlier this month that Jose Mourinho is a fan of the player and that Tottenham have been tracking him since December.
The same source later claimed that an official bid had been lodged with the Copa Libertadores winners, valued at £16 million.

R7 Esportes later claimed that this offer had been rejected and that Tottenham would need to pay a fee in the region of £45 million to have any chance of signing the Brazilian.

Despite reports that Jose Mourinho was a fan of the player, it did appear a strange link. There was a lack of reports from England backing up the report whilst Gerson’s previous struggles in Europe, following a move to Roma, suggested he would be a massive gamble.

Now, South American football expert Vickery has suggested in his article for The Sun that the source for these stories was the player’s father, who has something of a hands-on grip of his son’s career. Therefore, ‘there could be nothing in the rumours’ was the assessment of Vickery.
Tottenham fans, on the whole, will hope so.

In the future, Gerson might be back at a place where a European club is ready to take a risk on his services. However, for now, Tottenham fans would prefer to see a more established recruit come in to help in reinforcing their midfield.
