Aberdeen have taken a dig at Rangers in an email to fans about renewing their season tickets – by mimicking the statement released by Gers chairman Dave King in December when Dons boss Derek McInnes rejected a move to Ibrox.
When McInnes opted to remain at Pittodrie, the Ibrox board released a statement saying they endorsed McInnes’ decision “ because moving to a massive club like Rangers is a big step with concomitant risk.”
The Dons have since fired back, sending an email to supporters telling them “this time of year is concomitant with renewing” season tickets, as shown by a Dons fan who posted a screenshot of the email on Twitter.
After missing out on McInnes, Graeme Murty was handed the Ibrox reins for the remainder of the season before the Ibrox giants confirmed the appointment of Steven Gerrard as the club’s new manager from Junes 1st.
McInnes’ Dons pipped Rangers to second in the Scottish Premiership after a surprise final day win at Celtic Park to end Celtic’s two-and-a-half-year unbeaten domestic home record.
Football Insider verdict
Fair play to Aberdeen on this. The Gers statement in December was as ridiculous as it was unnecessarily wordy. The Gers board took a kicking over the use of ‘concomitant’ in their statement and the Dons are right to have a little bit of fun with it. That said, missing out on McInnes meant that Rangers were able to appoint Steven Gerrard instead and there will be few – if any – Rangers fans who will argue that they’d have preferred to see McInnes in the Gers dugout rather than Gerrard when the Light Blues kick off their Europa League campaign on July 12th. Whether Aberdeen are still having a laugh at Rangers’ expense in 12 months time is a different story and the Dons’ run of four consecutive second-place finishes in the Scottish Premiership should come to an end next season – although whether it is Rangers or Celtic who occupy second remains to be seen.
