The Miami FC continues its Open Cup run with a Second Round match against Miami United FC on Wednesday, May 16 at FIU Soccer Stadium. It will be the third match of the season between the two teams, with each of the first two matches ending in a 1-1 draw.
Impressive Open Cup Start
Miami FC has begun its 2018 U.S. Open Cup campaign with two convincing victories.
The first was a 3-1 road victory against FC Miami City in the Play-In Round of the tournament.
The Orange and Blue followed that up with a dominating 4-0 win over Red Force FC in the First Round, a match which they controlled from start to finish.
Going into the Second Round, Miami seems to have carried over its 2017 Open Cup form into 2018.
Offense Finding Its Feet
After three-consecutive 1-1 draws to start the 2018 season, the Orange and Blue has started to find the back of the net with ease.
The additions of Kris Tyrpak and Darío Suárez have played a large role in Miami pouring in seven goals over the last two matches.
Tyrpak scored two in the last match and Suárez has two in his first two matches with the team. Both players have also helped set up other players for scoring opportunities.
Miami created plenty of scoring chances through the first three matches of the season, but luck has started to lean back towards Miami's side over the past few matches.
Players to Watch
Daniel Vega might be nearing his mid-30s, but he's showing no signs of slowing down.
Miami's No. 1 keeper continues to make acrobatic saves and keep scorelines low.
Vega hasn't given up more than one goal in a match since October 18 of last year, and has conceded just twice in his last three Open Cup matches.
With a .800 goals against average and 12 saves in five total matches this season, Vega is in top form between the posts.
Vincenzo Rennella has adapted very well to a new role in 2018.
Used as a winger and striker last season, Rennella has taken on more of a holding midfielder position under head coach Paul Dalglish and performed admirably.
With his dribbling ability, passing prowess and exceptional vision, Rennella's traits fit the position perfectly.
Rennella has been able to dictate tempo and control Miami's offense from a more deep-lying spot on the field in 2018.
Looking Ahead
If Miami FC wins, it will advance to the Third Round of the Open Cup and play next Wednesday night. That subsequent Open Cup match will be played on the road against the Tampa Bay Rowdies or Jacksonville Armada FC.
Regardless of whether Miami FC wins this Wednesday or not, the Orange and Blue will return to NPSL action on Saturday, May 26. The Orange and Blue will take on Palm Beach United on the road in that match.
